Watching Conan the Barbarian for the first time! (With spoilers!)

Фильм және анимация

I'm old enough to have many favorites from the 80s, but somehow never got around to watching this. I hope this is a fun look at what it's like to watch Conan the Barbarian the first time in 2023!

Thanks for watching, Rob! Hope it wasn't too painful.I don't think it's super deep or serious, but it's just a fun movie, lots of funny/weird stuff going. There is even a part when Conan is walking out of a bar and a guy is behind a camel getting it on and he is like, "Hey, look at dat" Of course this is before LotR and Harry Potter so fantasy movies were slim pickins' back then, so just watch this and beastmaster alot.

I watched this with my friend a few weeks ago, because he had never seen it before either, and we are going to watch the second movie in a few days. I think the scene with the witch in the hut is similar to the montage scene of Conan and Subotai going from town to town. It's a series of side quests that give you a sense of how much time Conan spends just having random adventures before the main quest.

I actually thought the witch was interesting (I had fun trying to edit that scene down to fit my commentary!) but then it just…went nowhere! I would’ve bet money that she would’ve shown up to exact some revenge or something later. Maybe it was just jarring because for the runtime I didn’t think we’d be getting side quests!

Yeah, those goofy "I didn't expect that" moments are all part of what makes the movie a pulpy good time. Milius was such a wild, fascinating dude with kind of a secretly epic career.

Like I said, I get why it was popular and why many love it…and I had fun most of the time, but it felt longer than it actually was! He definitely had his hands in some classics, that’s for sure.

Those Arnold yells you kept doing...side splitting!! I had to back it up a few times for those! Great review sir. I think your still knocking it out if the park. Oh, and that lady he threw in the fire...I think she was a witch. With your sense of humor, I think you already knew that.

Best Soundtrack of any movie ever and I'll fight anyone who wants to argue otherwise. How eloquent and fluent speaking should a Barbarian be? The vulture scene, even though it was a fake vulture he bit, the real vulture was making him bleed. The animal got out of control. When he runs into the witch, that's his first experience with Magic and the Occult. Everyone laughed at her being pitched into the fire, it wasn't just you. The "Wheel of Pain" was supposed to be a Mill but it's purpose was to send people to die in the fighting pits. Thulsedoom had no need for people then, he was seeking steel, later that changed. Basil Polydorus also did The Hunt for Red October., Starship Troopers. He died of cancer in the 2000's. Conan the Barbarian was the last film to have a score recorded in Mono only.. There was supposed to be 3 films but they only got funding for the two. The first one didn't do that well at the box office.

Wheel of Pain is a mill. In one wide shot you can see tunnel that goes under it and a wagon loaded with grain sacks. That was something you couldn't see on old VHS but only after HD resolution widescreen blu ray was released.

I must’ve missed that shot. I figured that’s what it had to be, but then I also thought it would be ironic if they strengthened and/or created their own downfall.

The movie is rough, unpolished, raw - like life in that era, like Conan himself. I'm glad it transported me to another realm of wonder, mystery and alien cultures. It doesn't explain everything and not everything should be explained. For one I'm thankful it wasn't full of modern references in a clumsy attempt to make itself more relevant. It is an honest story... a journey of a few brave souls... into a long forgotten time and place. And the soundtrack is as epic as it can be. A masterpiece! Have you solved the Riddle of Steel? If not, Crom will just laugh at you from his mountain.

@@order42show Hey, I apologize if I sounded a little bit preachy. I was caught in a poetic moment I guess. The truth is... it's difficult sometimes to appreciate an old movie outside of its time and context. These special effects were amazing back then, whereas nowadays they might look trivial. It's difficult to switch off our modern thinking and see it for what it was back then. It's like visiting a foreign culture. We carry our own perceptions and understanding wherever we go. But only if we manage to switch them off for a moment, we would allow ourselves to be enriched by that foreign culture.

Oh, you’re absolutely right. But I just missed it when it was a thing back then (blame my parents), so I completely missed the boat. I’m sure there are things that you missed out on that you think are mid to bad that other people love, or just in general, you don’t connect with a popular thing or vice versa - it just happens that way. For me, I think, more than the effects - it’s that I’ve never really gravitated to “barbarian” type movies. Like, I love King Arthur/medieval stuff, but this time period or feel has never grabbed me.
