Aside from his voice, Bon was just so likeable. He was a character, he was funny, he had a mischievous twinkle in his eye, but he was a good bloke. And it shines through. Thank you for featuring Australian artists. We have so much talent for such a small population and not every talented Aussie artist is known overseas.

I write this so often on a Bon Scott performance with AC/DC. I grew up in Melbourne and as a teenager in the mid 70’s saw them so often live with Bon. We all knew that they were something special even then. I have never wanted to see them live since he died and have never bought an album since. He will always be their front man to me, and always with that naughty twinkle in his eye. My 15yr old friends and I never went backstage, we just knew that he was a wild one but also a great guy. Broke my heart when he died. He is and will always be a legend in this country.

We were middle class little girls who dressed a little provocatively for a show but we never did anything and our parents wouldn’t have let us out of the house if we looked like hookers 😂. The guys at the gigs were always respectful and well behaved and we never had any trouble. My ears used to ring for days though, it was the best time!

But Bon brought those plus raw sex appeal (despite the fact that he was actually kind of gross, unwashed and unhygienic! AS a teen I thought he was the sexiest man ever! There's nothing wrong with the later performances, but for a true perspective of the song at the time it was written, it's much better to listen to either the studio version, or at least a live version that's close to when it was first performed. I saw them in 1979 on this Highway to Hell tour not but several months before Bon Scott died. Saw them in a smaller arena, slightly smaller than this one, and it still is one of the best live rock shows I've ever seen, and believe me I went to to a whole bunch. Just amazing. And at some point this one heavyset bouncer looking guy put Angus Young on his shoulders and literally walked him up and down every stair in that arena through every section. He came right by me and I got his stinging sweat in my eyes from him flipping his head around while he rocked out, and I could see how beat up and battle-scarred his guitar was and all the worn decals and scratches on the back of it. His solo went on for easily 15 minutes. And meanwhile the band was just rocking so hard down on the stage and Bon Scott was always having the audience right in the palm of his hand. He just had that energy coupled with a sense of humor.

Thank you for your reaction. It is interesting to watch your two reviews of this song, from performances 30 years apart, and with two different singers. Prior to AC/DC, Bon Scott was in a progressive, folk, & blues band called Fraternity. In those days he was something of a hippie poet, and a prolific letter writer while on tour. Consequently, he had the ability to rhyme without losing the message. His tongue-in-cheek lyrics became a signature feature of AC/DC songs. My point is that I think his vocal performance was perhaps enhanced because he was singing his own carefully crafted (and heartfelt) words.

Bon Scott era AC/DC was my all time favourite band. I moved to Switzerland in 2007 and walked into my local rock bar, heard the music that was being played and went “Bon Scott era AC/DC: how is it possible that I have never heard this before?” It wasn’t AC/DC, but a Swiss band called Krokus, with singer Marc Storace, but the resemblance was uncanny. Apparently AC/DC did audition Marc Storage, who to my mind would have been a perfect fit for the band, but apparently Malcolm and Angus wanted a native English speaker, so went with Brian Johnson instead. I saw AC/DC several times with Brian Johnson and his attempts to sound like Bon Scott never really did it for me. But then I heard some of his work with Geordie: oh my God, the man has a fabulous voice! Why, oh why, did he put on that screech to try to sound like the previous guy, instead of playing to his strengths and using the fabulous voice that he did have? Some questions will never be answered, more’s the pity 😕

Bon will always be the true sound of ACDC for me. Songs like Evil Walks used to blast out of my car stereo all the time. It is a bit like Queen having to replace Freddy, you get a different sound but the songs are so great you still get great music. Interestingly, Queen's first choice for a new lead singer was Australian John Farnham but he did not want to move overseas for family reasons.

I've been an AC/DC fan for over 40 years, and I have to admit it, Ballbreaker is my favorite album. It was when I was just finishing my basic training in the Army that it came out, and it stuck with me.

Bon Scott has the advantage of authenticity. Highway to Hell is about the band’s early days in Australia, touring, with long distances on the highway, often to hell-hole towns. Bon Scott lived it. He feels it, and we hear that reality in his voice. Authenticity. And I remember back in the days before AC/DC became internationally famous, blasting AC/DC on my car stereo on long drives down highways in Queensland in tropical heat that created mirages on the road. We could relate to that song.

As good as Brian has been, Bon will always be the definitive AC/DC sound to me and was a tragic loss. As well as being a great vocalist, his song writing was dunny, cheeky and irreverent and often a bit naughty. The official video of 'A touch too much' is a great showcase of that.

He was a great lyricist, he was actually well read, he was a great vocalist, he was a great performer, was always fun and never bombastic, the word "genuine" is overused, it looks like he's there for every fan as if each night was unique, I see a man who appreciates the people who bought tickets. He's second to no other, in rock anyway.

I love your reactions, your insightful analysis and knowledge are both first rate. I was just a kid, here in Australia, when these guys were playing the pubs and clubs, before they got really huge. I even had a Rotty x named Bon and like the man himself, that dog was brilliant and I remember being heart broken when I heard Bo Scott had died. The band however didn't fold and in true Aussie fighting fashion, they came back bigger and better than ever. Rock in peace Bon Scott, both of you.

I love both Bon and Brian, and appreciate that there’s others out there who show that appreciation and don’t rate them against each other. That being said, I feel like as good as Bon’s vocals were, with the march of technology, we would have gotten even deeper, richer output if Bon hadn’t passed away, we would be able to hear the best levels of audio quality possible from him as well… just a thought though. No doubt he was great as he was, but it can be easy to think sometimes, what if. Though I’m grateful to have both available to provide ear pleasure, soul pleasure… etc, to me.

I saw AC/DC live at the Oakland Coliseum in 1985. I was 12 years old. My first real Rock concert. What I remember besides the incredible crowd was the incredible VOLUME things I had never experienced before!!!! The Volume is something you have to "experience" it's more like something you "feel" because its so loud it shakes your entire body.
