Welcome to another "discussion-style" video from BlackHawk Paramotors USA! This video is part of our ongoing Paramotor Buyer's Guide Series where we help "potential Pilots" become "educated buyers." For such a growing sport, there is an overwhelming amount of information out there. It can be difficult for those who are new to Paramotors to navigate through all of it. BlackHawk is here to help!
Today, BlackHawk owner Mike Robinson & BlackHawk's Manager Heidi Lee are going to sit down and discuss an escalating concern in the sport. There's been a growing pattern of negativity and unethical sales practices which are preventing aviation enthusiasts (customers) from getting into the sport entirely.
The atmosphere in places like Social Media and online forums has become very toxic. Many of the customers we speak with tell us that they felt completely disenchanted with the sport after getting off the phone with a Dealer. In fact, many of them almost didn't get into the sport, and as Pilots ourselves, this breaks our heart. Many feel like they are quote "buying a used car" when this is supposed to be a professional aviation-related industry. This must stop.
It's important to remember that each and every Pilot is an ambassador to the sport - weather they work in the Industry or not. The way Pilots conduct themselves online can impact someone's decision to get into the sport. For many of us, this is a dream spanning back to our childhood. No one should take that away from another human being.
Dealers have been at each other's throats fighting over customers and students when there's room for EVERYONE in the sport. Industry professionals (actual Manufacturers) are using fear of death and slanderous disinformation to sell their products. It's embarrassing for those of us with decades in the industry to see the sport go in a direction like this. It's even worse to have to take the time to make a video about this when we'd much rather talk about flying tips. BlackHawk is committed to absolute professionalism and will continue to lead by example.

My personal opinion of Blackhawk: Excellent and responsive service, great value. I purchased my Airmax Quad Package just over a year ago. I love my Lowboy Quad II and my Velocity Core wing. The Core wing is slow, easy to inflate, easy to control and an excellent wing for a beginner like myself. I did have a major issue with my Airmax220 motor (mfg defect in cylinder casting) but Blackhawk fixed it made it like brand new. It was fully covered under the warrantee with zero charge. I have no complaints. Mike G., Mike R., and Heidi have always answered any questions and made things right when needed. I am quite happy with all my gear and ignore the naysayers. Just watch my youtube vids! I am completely self-taught, still fairly new, and can easy launch, fly and land like a pro every time.

Blackhawk Rocks! I've been flying my equipment since 2014 and recently purchased a new Core glider this year that I'm very happy with. Customer service is very responsive. I've called both Mike and Heidi throughout the years with various questions, and they always get back with me promptly! Thanks you guys for always being here for your customers/friends! Haters are going to hate Mike. I'm glad I chose Blackhawk paramotor and went to your place to train when I got into the sport 4 years ago. There were other places I could have went and money wasn't an issue but I liked your guys personality and genuine desire and interest into every individual achieving their goal into becoming a paramotor pilot including myself. Thank God I finally had my eyes "opened". I am new to this sport and when I browse youTube I've seen many videos that are bashing BlackHawk brand. I believed it at first because I did not know any better. But after spending my time doing research I started to see where these mud slinging came from. Mostly from the expensive, "cool" dealer that sells high end & heavily marketed products and their friends on youTube. Anyway, I finally was able to make the decision to purchase my first motor and wing and decided to order a black bee complete package from you guys. I am looking fwd using it soon. Thank you.
Must admit that I have been misled a little by social media and for that I apologize. I have never made a comment negatively about your brand simply because it would have been perpetuated rumor with no basis . I welcome anyone that puts the effort into safely making a person a pilot a reachable goal. I have no experience with your gear but that may change. I dont fly, but it is just a matter of time until I do, but i watch every single paramotor video i can find. From what i have seen and read i would have no issues buying blackhawk, the customer service is beyond anything that i have seen. A nice unbiased presentation! It was refreshing to see you represent your company in a positive, straight-up manner without bashing the competition or name calling. I am in the process of learning all that I can about this hobby and have been disappointed with all the product bashing (and name calling!) out there. As I educate my self on the equipment out there and the training available, I will be looking at equipment from a total package perspective ...and will definitely consider BlackHawk Paramotors USA for my 'late-in-life' plans for open air flying. In a non-regulated sport with Dealers on commission, sometimes people lose sight of why they got into the sport in the first place... to just fly! I have been a BH customer for almost two years now and have had nothing but a positive experience and a trouble free machine. I was a helicopter mechanic in the military and I currently work in Aviation Life Support Equipment. I can say this as a professional in the aviation field that their machines a built very well. From the frame wields to the engine components, everything is very nice quality. I was especially impressed with the harness and glider. I spend most of my time at work inspecting stitching and fabric materials meant for saving lives and extracting people. So when I saw the glider and started inspecting it up close..... the risers, lines, line attachment point on the glider and the harness... it really surprised me just how well it was made. I feel 100% safe flying my Blackhawk Talon 190 under my Velocity Core glider! I am not a dealer or instructor, just a very happy customer! feel free to reach out to me if you want an unbiased customer to talk to! Blackhawk is not cheap! it's affordable!
I've been following all the major players for a few years and will start my training soon. I agree there is just still no perfect paramotor. There's no ONE way to learn, there are many ways and we should all keep learning and keep open minds in this closer-knit community. We rely on each other to keep the sport accessible and safe. YES!!!! I want to jump out of my chair and give you a high-five! We need more Pilots out there with your attitude. Seriously. It really does come down to the relationship people have with the first person they ever spoke with about the sport. ALL major companies make a good motor or they wouldn't be in business. I know people who fly what their friends fly - just because. As long as people are safe and flying, I'll never care what sticker they have on their unit. Agree. As I self trained, I fell come times, the rhino cage survived. Got over 40 hrs so far on the 9yr old R120 motor, works as good as new.

As someone looking into this I find the trash talk a real turn-off. Now I understand you can't stop others from doing it, but it's very discouraging. I can't understand why I see this with powered paragliders, but not with the weight shift trikes (ultralights). It's weird. There is one person, I'd rather not say his name, who's an extreme trash talker. The "I'm the only one who can properly train you with my Super Training!" set off red flags. I did a search on his name only to find major red flags. I no longer watch his videos, I can't trust him. Sorry for the rant, but it's still a lot of money and all the FUD being thrown out doesn't help anyone.

You really captured the essence of our video in your comment Bob! It drives us nuts working in the Industry to see people at each other's throats. There is sooooo much room for everyone in this growing sport, and we don't see this kind of toxicity in other sports. There are a couple of people (like the SUPER one you mentioned) who were a major part in starting this situation. They started rocking the boat, and other like-minded "super" people joined in. Dealers reacted back and it started this "brand war." We are working hard to change this. I personally worked for Dell Schanze for a couple of years before coming to BlackHawk. He NEVER got over my leaving his flying-circus for a professional outfit. I'm glad I got the experience though so I have a basis for comparison. I really appreciate BlackHawk so much more now. We all know who you are talking about without saying his name. He is the biggest turn-off of all when he claims he knows more than anyone about PPG. Del Schantze (or whatever his name is) is a close 2nd.

Since these things are never advertised on tv like autos and the website appears to only list only best sellers, what i suggest as a prospect, are downloadable product sheets on pdf's to be able to compare all your models and decide which machine i would be interested in.

I just want to Say that I heard a lot of negative things about BlackHawk that nobody could backup. I also know, that if what people were telling me was true, then there is know way in hell that they would still be in buissiness . All to often people hear something and accept it as Gospel Truth. The more I looked and did the research, the more I was convinced to go with BlackHawk. I called them in late June of this year. Heidi and Mike set me up with the BlackHawk 125 package. A few weeks later I am literally flying for the first time. Its amazing that after dreaming about flying all my life I am actually doing it. I could not be more happier with the decision I made to go with BlackHawk. The 125 really impressed me. Even some of the people that told me negative things about Blackhawk were impressed after seeing it. I am a BlackHawk fan for Life. thanks Mike and Heidi

Most people have never even seen a Paramotor in person, so they have to rely on info online. Dealers know this very well and things get messy with such high $ items. This was a great vid and really changed my entire perspective on Blackhawk.. It makes sense that other dealers would knock you because your ethical in your pricing.. It angers the greedy.. I can't buy just yet, my wife's fighting cancer and my boys disabled but I know Gods going to make a way in the future to live out my dream of flight and when He does I'm going Blackhawk.. Love your heart, ethics and honesty.

I bought a used 2018 blackhawk 190 talon with kestrel cage and electric start. I think it's an awesome machine.
I have a blackhawk 125 I love it ! The only thing I upgraded was my wing after I learned to fly on my paratoys wing I traded up to a apco . The engine is good thanks blackhawk for keeping me in the air.😁

I have owned three BlackHawk paramotors and two Velocity wings. I just bought a new Low Boy 3 and I have zero complaints about BlackHawk. The customer service is unparalleled and the workmanship is easy to judge as high quality. I would like to see someone talking trash about BlackHawk actually cite something of substance in regards to workmanship...they can’t. It’s all BS so some other dealer can make a sale. Those who can’t compete, talk trash...plain and simple.

I have had numerous conversations with black hawk personnel, they are genuine, knowledgeable, and fair on their price points. They have been very helpful though I have not been able to afford the sport at this time. The false or claims by others or white lies by others is just more damaging to themselves in the long run. The fact that Black hawk is doing well is because people are trusting in them. The quality of the engines, the warranty, the service, the help and the curtesy of the staff is all what builds a strong foundation in relation with customers and the business! Keep up the excellent work BlackHawk! Always look forward and occasionally look back at what the competitors have learned from your example! Dave Abraham.

Talking about it gets us all fired up - especially when the customer is excited. It's not always like "work" for us because we'd be talking to people about it on our days off anyway... It's really sad when newbies don't want to get into the sport because of what they see happening in the groups. We really needed to make this video. Not to worry. The youtube PPG pilots who I respect don't say bad things about Blackhawk. Several started out in Blackhawks. I'm in the market for my first and will definitely consider BlackHawk, especially after TheGreatMrBill's review (below).

Listen to this video multiple times and pay attention to what they say. I mean really pay attention to what they say and pay attention to what you're hearing from other companies how do so many other companies supposedly know so much about all the stuff that you normally wouldn't know about unless you're making it up. I just don't understand why anybody but he would want to do business with somebody that runs down a hard-working competitor that's trying to do the right thing for the people that want to get into paramotoring.. Building Quality Equipment and getting people on a budget in the sky safely these people are doing it in a safe way.

Hi Mike and Heidi, I have to say that it's so refreshing to hear from "upper management" with positive conversation or so I'm gathering, instead of the complete negative crap from "the best pilot in the world" like Dell or even from your competitors like Kurt. Instead of talking positive about the equipment and training that Dell uses and SELLS, he tries to scare potential clients into believing that they are going to DIE if they don't buy what he recommends. I'm sorry, but that is a bunch of BS and he even tries to verbally connect recent deaths with your competitors, without evidence, which IMO, leaves you guys WIDE OPEN to potential slander litigation! I just can't stand all of this negative talk in what I thought I discovered is a really cool way to fly for many aspiring pilots that just don't have the funds to fly type aircraft for now OR the "Golden Age Pilots" that just want to experience flying anyway they can OR Pilots like myself with advanced ratings (CFII) that can no longer pass the required Class 1 Medicals due to disabilities that in no way would keep me from flying a trike (or quad) paramotor. I've been seriously looking to purchase a complete package, training and all (for a trike pilot), and feel that Black Hawk probably has the best equipment for me, but am just so reluctant to go with Black Hawk because of Dell and all of his constant "I'm the best" videos, that you guys allow!!!! It's not just letting him constantly brag about himself (which can't even be verified), but it's the constant "you're going to DIE" talk if you go to a competitor like Kurt, that you and I know is a complete bunch of BS !! Kurt may or may not have the best training program here in the US, he may or may not sell the best products available here in the US, but there are THOUSANDS of Fresh Breeze products operating globally where people aren't DYING when the fly!. Believe me, I'm NO fan of Kurts, because he does the same crap as Dell (just without the Dying part). I've started and sold a few different types of bushiness' in my working career and have just about seen it all (until now). I ask if you can help me mentally and emotionally navigate these "clowns" that many paramotor pilots seem to respect, I'd appreciate it, because as a professional pilot, I don't see how I could ever respect either one of these guys enough to even talk to them on the phone. We could spend the time and money to take these people to court, but they simply don't have any assets to make it worth while. Most of the "problem" individuals in this sport are barely paying their rent. We could use that money to develop a new motor, instead of going after someone who simply won't change. It's really not that bad... The types of customers who believe that kind of stuff are not typically the ones we want to do business with, so it really works out well. We really want a certain type of customer representing our equipment (open-minded people who just want to fly). The students we've worked with who have purchased from certain competitors have been the most difficult to train. Our competition can have them lol ;). It's funny how it all works out! I would say, you guys are affordable. I don't call it cheap. I have trained on your equipment and all your wings are solid. You guys are great and thanks for putting this video out. lots of people don't know the difference between cheap gear and affordable gear. Cheers

Are the cores designed just for using with a motor or can you also use them for normal parasailing?

They can be used for both, but it's primarily a wing for Powered Paragliding. We have another glider called the Elektra which is a phenomenal crossover wing. It has a 10:1 glide ratio which is amazing for a Paramotor wing. When you have time, give us a call. I saw this video earlier today so immediately I called Mike and talk to him about this video... I'm in Maine Mike is in California. And when I said to him was why would anybody want to do business with somebody that's putting down their competitors when we're all supposed to be in this together as friends and now something else I have Dimension is that oh, if you have a Neighbor Next Door and that neighbor was running down all the other neighbors in the neighborhood would you have anything to do with that neighbor? Well that's essentially what these other companies are doing the Blackhawk it's not difficult to find those videos out there .. That's all I have to say for now... One last thought though with the investment that Blackhawk has and all their equipment to be able to reproduce make an engineer new features before most other companies these people have probably millions of dollars invested, and speaking of engineering Blackhawk has Engineers that work for them better creating all this new equipment, they are definitely doing something right because if they weren't is no way they could be doing what they're doing in the production line... Well I hope this gives you all something to think about

Still yet to buy a Paramotor, but pretty sure I'm getting a black hawk. Not that it has anything to do with my decision, but listening to a sales pitch which doesn't involve spamming a competitor is a breath of fresh air. You're right, i've second guessed my decision to get into this sport because of the endless shit flinging in this industry. Every single training organisation makes you feel like you're signing your death certificate if you don't buy their stuff.

Oh man, I can TOTALLY relate to your frustrations... When I first discovered this on KZread, I stayed up for almost 24 hours watching videos. I was so excited about this life-changing experience! The very first person I called (because they were all over KZread) told me that "I'd literally die if I didn't buy HIS gear." That rocked my confidence in the sport for a while. There are only a few people out there who conduct business like that. The rest of the Pilots and Professionals are really neat people. I'm really sorry you had to experience the underbelly of the sport. Please don't let a few knuckleheads ruin your dream of flight. Hey Mike and Heidi, don’t say Blackhawk is cheap. It’s more like cost effective or less cost than others but not cheap. My BH 125 and Velocity Edge saved my butt in sketchy situations. Once I was caught midflight with a rogue 20-25mph wind gust for more than half hour and the gear held up and delivered me safely back on the ground. I have the helmet cam clip to prove it. Send me a promo BH shirt just like what Heidi was wearing in this vid and I will be a walking billboard around town. I will even put a sign on the back that says “KICK ME... if you want to learn how to fly paramotors.” 😎

Oh boy... Here we go... We all know exactly where you heard that information: Dell Schanze of Flat Top Paramotors. He's the only one out there using "fear and death" to sell his gear. We really like to let our own gear shine and not talk about other Manufacturers, so if you would like to get the opinion of 20,000+ Pilots on Flat Top, go to the Paramotor group on Facebook and ask them. The response will be overwhelming I assure you. My Wife and I used to work for Flat Top personally for 2 years so we are very familiar with Dell. There are countless reasons why we parted ways, but it simply wouldn't be professional or relevant to discuss all of that here. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Can you imagine if Honda was telling people that "they would die if they purchase a Suzuki?" People would laugh or just never buy from them right? Yet, you just believed someone who literally told you just that. The problem is that no one knows about Paramotors and everyone has been around a motorcycle. Without having ever flying one in person, it's just impossible to know what's accurate or not. You have to rely on what other "professionals" tell you right? I've never understood people like Dell Schanze... Using "fear and DEATH" to market your own product, while disparaging any and all other brands out there is a horrific business practice. Fear doesn't belong in this sport - especially being spewed by someone manufacturing this stuff! That's a huge unprofessionalism red flag - and can prevent someone from even trying the sport in the first place. This sport is so safe there isn't even a Pilot License required. You don't see Boing telling customers that "they will die if they buy a Cesna." Are you starting to get my point? Also, there is no such thing as "certified gear" with Paramotors. There literally isn't a single certifying body out there. ALL Paramotors are "uncertified" and anyone who tells you differently is being flat-out dishonest. Paragliders have their own independent certification bodies in Europe and it costs about $10,000 (per glider size) to certify a glider. We went through this process with our Velocity Elektra and it "passed with flying colors." Dell started his own "organization" called the WPPGA. It isn't registered anywhere as an actual "organization." This is where he says his gear is certified... By his own non-official "organization." It's really bizarre to all of us in the professional side of the Industry. I really hope the time I spent writing this helps. My goal is to just educate and keep people safe. I don't care which brand Paramotor you buy - as long as you are happy and safe. There are a lot of good machines out there. It's up to you to decide which one is best for you personally. PLEASE take your time researching this sport and be extremely careful of anyone who takes attention away from their own brand by pointing out the faults of others. Now Duper Dell is saying that he is a Christian and therefore he has to inform others about "Death flex" gliders sold by his competitors that are "killing pilots." Wow. Duper keeps upping his Duping and now he's using religion. That's the opposite of what a good Christian would do, but he doesn't realise how transparent he seems. Sadly, many new pilots can't see through his clown act of pretending to care about his students. Ironically, he accuses other instructors of not caring and only wanting money -- that's the Duper. Psychologists have a term for this, something like sociopathic behaviour. "This too shall pass." Smooth Skies and then we Fly

Why not use carbon fiber props

That's a fantastic question and one we get a lot... Wooden props have the advantage of being about half the cost and you can repair them easily yourself. The carbon fiber props (which come standard on some of our units) can collapse down to a smaller size, they weigh a little bit less, and they look really nice. It comes down to the Pilot. For beginners (who sometimes tend to break props), we recommend wooden props. For Pilots who have been flying for a while, the carbon fiber props are a nice upgrade. Both props provide the same amount of thrust. 10 years, ive looked for 10 years, on some level the competitors turned me off with thier trash talk. You have been constantly pushing safety (NO videos of you guys chasing and kicking avian wildlife or firing sidearms from the air). Consistency, in all of your videos. I bought one of your last Edge wings and a free flight harness. I did buy a used motor from a friend, but when people approach me and ask in amazement what it is, i tell the to look up Blackhawk PPG. As for those that speak low of the motors, i always ask, well, how well did they maintain it?, did they preflight, did they post flight? Just like a dirtbike, you take care of it, it takes care of you. No one sells junk and stays in business, especially 20 years. Oh look i wrote a book here. Blue Skies

YES!!! I really appreciate you sharing this link. I hadn't seen this video yet. These are Pilots who know how to take care of their engines (good pre-flight checks, putting new gas in at the start of a new flying season, etc). It really comes down to how Pilots treat their equipment. ALL Manufacturers make some good gear. You can ride a motorcycle on one wheel, but that does NOT mean the drive will be safe. There are a LOT of things we could do and "still fly" but you won't ever see those things from BlackHawk if it compromises safety. PLEASE be careful doing your research. I know how charismatic some of the "characters" can be who sell equipment. If someone put that idea in your head, they do NOT have your safety in mind ;). Please keep talking to other Manufacturers. Call every single one if you can. There is a world of difference in the way some companies treat their customers. Honesty and straight talk will get me listening before any bells and whistles , and there’s others that talk a lot and make people believe this is a rich mans sport , when in reality for them it’s all about the money and once they got it they don’t really care what you’re doing , they done there bit .

Hi Paul. I think you accidentally commented on the wrong video. We sell BlackHawk "Paramotors." It's basically a paraglider with a motor that goes on your back. Watch the whole video when you have time... You can see what a Paramotor actually is and we also talk about how our engines are made in Spain, our frames and cages are made in Switzerland, our gliders are made in South Korea, etc. The only "Chinese products" on a BlackHawk Paramotor are the tires and seat belt straps I believe. I hope this helps clear up some of your confusion and prevents the spreading of inaccurate information. I personally always want to know what I'm talking about when I participate in public forums and it's so embarrassing when I've made my own assumptions. We've all done it ;). Cheap is such a nasty word your equipment is affordable. Cheap is something that is made from inferior pieces and parts and is constantly breaking.

You need to just look where most of all the bashing starts it’s with one of the two douch brothers captain crunch or his bitchy girlfriend super Dell. These are the guys that are ruining the sport.I have seen first hand Kurt bash other brands and other well known people in the paragliding community just to make himself feel better. I have not once Heard you or anybody else from Blackhawk bash any other brand or any other person and that shows real what kind of people you really are. Keep up the good work people always find out the truth it just takes some time.
I am trying to get into the sport I typed in (Blackhawk paramotor) on KZread and wasn’t impressed by what I saw I encourage others to do so. Bad reviews first video a lot of deaths with Blackhawk gear and the parachute wasn’t strung right straight out the box.

Thanks for the comment, but it really is an example of exactly the type of negativity this video is trying to address... I'd suggest watching videos completely before commenting - just in case your concerns are addressed. Later in the video we mention that our Packages come WITH the Paraglider. I've worked in the sport for a decade and have yet to see any comparable product at the same price. Be careful of the small print when you are looking at prices. You look so tired and beaten. I've just started getting interested in this sport(hobby) and I've seen the beat down videos of which you speak. SUCKS! Hang in there.
