My Ranger has almost 500,000 miles and I haven't had any of these issues but the Cam Shaft Synchronizer. Only $56 dollars though and way easy to install. I'd say I got my money's worth for a cheap little truck.

Hell yea! Keep taking care of it, my 2005 (4.0 sohc) made it to just shy of 850k before it crapped out, I’m dropping a new engine in it this weekend. Fantastic little trucks these are.

I have a 2.3L 2006 Ranger and it is the most reliable vehicle I have ever had the pleasure of owning. People make fun of Ford all the time but fail to realize that Ford, (in my opinion) made some of the most inexpensive yet still most reliable pickup trucks compared to its competition.

The Tacoma was actually the exact same price during the early years of the 3rd gen ranger but today the ranger has depreciated so much more and is still very reliable so its kind of a no brainer to buy it now. Luckily the horrible reputation ford has for reliability on some of its trucks (3 valve 5.4l Triton f-150) lets you get a smoking deal on a reliable old ranger.

I ❤️my 2010 Ranger! At 254,000 miles, I’ve had no major problems. Almost no oil consumption, and only repairs have been heater parts and an axle seal. Yes, the ride is harsh, and there’s always wind noise around the door, but it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever had.

I just must not drive as much as I thought, lol. Mine is a 1998 and has less than 150,000 miles on it. The slave cylinder went out in it a couple years ago and as it's inside the bell housing I just decided to replace the whole clutch system since I had to take out the transmission anyways to replace that slave cylinder. While it was off I went ahead and replaced the rear main seal too because, why not? It's still chugging right along.

@@billyjack8119 thats pretty nice, but lima block based engines, his being the 2.5l stroked varriant of the late block and updated head 2.3l engine, if he has the 4cylinder engine, have no actual issues, the only weak part of them is the pistons which still can last that long, and the rest of them can handle up to 400hp yet are only dealing with 119hp, meanwhile the 4.0, while reliable, has a fair amount of known faults and generally just doesn't last quite as long, sometimes it can but usually it doesn't, the 4cylinder engines generally seem to get a good 100k further all in all

Bought my 2008 4×4 3.0 liter brand new ; still running like new ! No issues. 189,000 miles.

I bought one new in 2001. it's still on the road. No rust, no mechanical issues. I have replaced battery and tires, nothing else. Probably the best truck I owned. Heck the paint even still looks new.

Bought my 2011 Ford Ranger Sport 4X4 New 10yrs ago. Its had zero problems in 10yrs.

My 1998 Ranger XLT long bed is still going at 515,225 miles. 2.5l and 5 spd. All I have ever put into it besides brakes is 1 water pump and 1 radiator. Im on the 2nd clutch. still getting better gas mileage than most new cars.

I have an 06 Sport model with the Vulcan engine, I do preventative maintenance on her. Besides the cam synchro chirp of death which I changed before it even started this little pickup has given ZER0 issues. I love the simplistic design and the fact that she always cranks over when other vehicles fail! 😎

my 2011 fx4 4.0L ranger is an absolute beast. I've done nearly 200,000kms and 100k of those have been what i would consider serious off roading..... Service forests roads, camping in the bush, work, you name it... that ranger Hasn't skipped a beat. It's modestly lifted with mudders. You guys don't realize the places that truck has gotten me. places where there are no roads in or out.. It's been in accidents, its been in rivers, its been stuck, all 4 wheels off the ground, it's had rocks thrown at it by sasquatch on 2 occasions.. All across BC baby. Cheers ✌️

Nice bro, I got the 2.5L w/ 5 spd in the single cab Mazda branded Ranger, the B2500. Apart the grill, headlights, and tail lights, essentially the same truck. Can honestly say its the most trustworthy vehicle I've ever had, albeit the first vehicle I've done almost all the work on myself.

Thank God I have a 2000 ford ranger xlt 2.5 . I got it used in 2006 only 6 years old with 111.000 mile on it and I still have it today 2022!! Great truck still going strong! Love this truck!!

Bought a 04 ranger and the underneath was covered with rust!!!! Took it to the body shop and they are currently patching the frame, and cleaning the rust/undercoating the truck! Excited to get it back!

I had a 96 ranger. Put 518,000 miles on it in 23 years of hard use. My family literally held an intervention to get me to buy a new truck! Geez... Anyway, I caved and replaced it with a 2010. I've had it 3 years and love the thing. 130,000 miles on it now. No real issues so far except the heater fan broke. I replaced it myself. I love the Rangers!

I have a 2008 sport 4x4... 240k on it now. Still looks and runs like new. I haven't had any of these issues but I do look after it well.

I got my first Ranger a couple months ago: 3.0 V6 2003 XLT with 80,000 miles. Everything works and it's wonderful to drive. I got rid of a 2018 Accord for something more useful that I didn't have a monthly payment on.

Had a 97 2.3 . Drove it for 12 years 5 speed. 250 k with regular care brakes, battery, ball joints, 2000 4.0 liter ball joints brakes battery tires. Have an 2003 Edge with the 3.0 liter brakes, tires ball joints maybe a tune up or two, radiator on the 3.0 fluids flushed, hoses, serpantine belt and fuel pump. Great trucks and if considering to buy one now they are quite expensive. They were made quite well

I have 1998 xlt with 440,000 miles. It just won't quit. One thing on 4.0 OHV from 98-00, nearly all the heads from the factory are prone to Crack. I changed mine at 150,000, and they were cracked bad enough to fit a sheet of paper in between the valves. A bit time consuming, but easy enough job for the average tinkerer. I even gave the new heads a mild port job that really helped wake the engine up. Great content. 👍 Keep up the good work.

I have a 2000 XLT extended cab with 110,000 mi. It’s a salvage title and I’ve had it for about a year now but so far I replaced the camshaft position sensor, neutral safety switch, battery, front rotors and bearings, valve stem and of course the oil and filter every 3k miles. I’m so proud of that truck I love it

@@makapa2u Take about rust my 98 oil pan rusted out and my present 2008, that I drive now, I had to weld up the diff cover, because it got a hole in it. But the vulcan engine that I use Mobil 1, synthetic oil, that I change twice a year, whatever the mileage runs like new!!!

2006 XLT Fx4 4.0 lol issues none. Use my truck to show all the city boys how to actually drive! Nothing handles or has enough power to do what I need to do to get life done in the mountains. I've held 2 elk and 4 deer and it still handles the weight. It just does everything I need with excellent fuel economy. Pull out 350's, 3500's, and a 10,000 lb forklift. Do I really need to say more? Ford should have stuck with the reliable gen 3.

03 ranger 3.0 edge 95k Had this truck for 10 years, recently drove it from California to Florida 2600 miles, had to replace the cam sync a while back other than that regular oil change every 5k ,transmission fluid, coolant flush, brake & clutch flush ,serpentine belt, brake pads, anti roll bar bushing & links just basic maintenance , doesn't burn any oil , reliable little truck

To everyone who has these with insane miles on them. I have 2 rangers, a 2004 4.0 4x4 tremor and a 2002 2.4 2x4 xlt. Paid 500 for each, the tremor had oveheated and blown the motor, the 2.4 threw a rod cap thru the block at 213,000. Both are awesome.

Got me a 2003 3.0 XLT with 85,000 miles on it and only ran into the synchronizer issue so far. Loving this truck

How much did you get it for ?

From a mechanic's standpoint, this is honestly all really good info and well researched/put together. I was able to snag a '99 Ranger a couple weeks ago, 116,000 miles in good overall shape with the Vulcan 3.0. It's slow as hell, but I love it, and I never need to get anywhere fast. The versatility of a small truck is awesome. I dig the OHV design, pushrods are fine as long as you don't over-rev. My coolant loop had some contamination, so I flushed it and installed a new t-stat and radiator. Planning on doing the synchronizer for good measure, along with all fluids.

I had a 97 3.0 extended cab 5 speed for a few years. Smooth ride and with the right wheels it has a good look. Yeah it was a dog, but the vulcan 3.0's are excellent motors. Of course not a gas miser though...

Own 7 rangers. 200,000- 300,000 miles. All still going strong. Best small truck ever built!

Bought mine new in 2004, was totaled in 2019, in 15 years, only thing to go wrong was the throttle position sensor, and Rack and Pinion went out at 36k. Got a rebuilt from Autozone for 150. That was it. Had the Quad 2.3L, with a auto. 4.11 rear gears. Was a great Truck.

I bought my 93 with 300 thousand miles for 600 dollars. I used parts truck built a truck with good body frame. Runs great 3 yrs later.

Yup, I have an 06' 2.3 with 120K on the clock and the multi-function switch went out last year. And yes, it's about a 1 hr fix (without prior experience) at the most. I've had 3 other Rangers and they've all been good runners, this one has the best handling.

I have a 1999 Ranger 4×4 Off-Road 3.0 that's approaching 264k and it still runs like new. I had the 4-speed automatic rebuilt at 250k right after I bought it. It's my DD and I often get compliments on how good it looks for its age. I overhauled the air conditioner myself and just replaced my donut with a full size spare. I love my Ranger. She's slow, but if I want speed, I'll get out my 2017 Mustang.

@sasquatchrosefarts9131 the 3.0 Vulcan isn't that powerful, it only has 160-180 pound feet of torque and is a high winder. It was originally designed for the 1st gen Taurus. Haha. You might be thinking of the 4.0 SOHC? Those have torque. They were the base model V6s in the early 2000s Mustangs.

2011 Ranger sport 4.0. I've replaced the entire front end suspension, new crate motor, radiator, battery and shocks. Oh I forgot to mention they were all replaced because I wanted to, nothing ever went bad on its own. Only reliable girl in my life 😂

2007 with 270k miles and only minor rust damage in Ohio. I take care of it and wash salt, dirt, and grime off and honestly the worst rust I have on it is the frame and power steering pump. But the pump is factory and started ticking so that's going soon!

Out of all the different trucks I've had , my 2010 Ranger 4.OL Fx4 has been my favorite to drive and it's been the most reliable vehicle I've had. 200,000km now and runs like new, only replaced bearings on the front just recently but I have oversized off set tires on it. Other than that it's just been typical vehicle maintenance, oil, brake pads, etc.

I have a 05 and I live in the sticks so it’s rough on the truck but so far I’ve only had to put a fuel pump, alternator, tire rods, wheel bearings, bushings, and the control arm thingy( probably not the right name for it ) and a starter other than that, it’s been a great truck!

I have a 99 and a 2000 both 5 speeds and both over 200,000 miles

I own a 2000 XLT here in the UK. 2.5td. still in use every day I had a water pump failure which caused the headgasket to blow, easy fix. But that's it. Great pickup ❤❤

I have a 2005 Ford Ranger, 2.3 L, 5 speed manual. 260,000 miles. Runs really good. No issues other than the check engine light on, lol. I think its a minor issue because I don't know what is wrong to trip the light, everything else runs great

1998 175,000 miles 2.5L RWD Style side Standard cab XLT front engine seal around timings and crank seal slow leak...had trans job front sus shocks joints and arms.

My 01' Ranger has 290K and other than the spring shackles I've had no problems! Being up in Minnesota I expect all trucks to go through shackles! Great truck. 4.0 engine still doesn't use a drop of oil. Had the timing chain changed at 100K as preventative maintenance.

My 2003 Ranger FX4 4x4, only has 75K miles on it and the ONLY thing on this list that i have had wrong is the plastic coolant housing problem! LOVE ME TRUCK!

My 2004 Ranger ran 238,000 miles for me. It died 110 miles from home so I donated it out. They went on to resell it for four grand. I'm not sure what happened to it but it had no oil when I coasted into the gas station and then would not start. I did previously have to replace the shackles as they rusted and broke. It had a few other issues over the years but was reliable up until the end!

So glad I got the 2.5 L4 with the 5spd M5OD. Probably the most rock solid setup. It's actually the Mazda branded one, the B2500. The timing belt is kind of a pain, having to either find the special tool for the tensioner (they don't exist anymore, kinda like the driver's side motor mount) or make one out of a socket with an angle grinder, possibly even using a pry bar if its exactly the right length and ever so slightly bent, but other than that, once you get everything up to snuff it's an absolute soldier. I have no idea how many miles it actually has on it, was pretty obvious it had been run harder than it had been maintained, the abs/speed sensor in the rear diff was out (not actually the sensor, a wiring connector under the truck) which little did I know also ran the odometer. Gauging from all the other wear items I ended up having to change, like U joints in the driveshaft, all the regular front end stuff, regular tune up items + a little extra, EGR, the entire steering system apart from the steering wheel and column, and even the spider gears in the rear diff (that got kinda hairy, ended up filing down the very inside tip of a tooth on the ring gear to get the pin out of the carrier) it probably had at least 200,000 on it, and one side of it was really scraped up, but I did some body work on it and it came out really well. It has outlasted a couple later model vehicles I've owned, albeit with more investment in small parts, but none of the major issues the others ended up with, pretty impressive considering was almost a decade older than one of them. It just turned 21 this year, and though I don't drink much anymore, I will be having a vodka with it to celebrate.

How did you fix the speedometer? I have a 1998 with the 2.5L and the speedometer stopped working.. I have replaced the speed sensor and it makes not difference.

Our 11 Ranger 4X4 XLT has a 4.0 V6 and 5spd auto transmission. It’s a nice pickup with only 34K miles. This is our 4th Ranger.

Ive put probably 2k into my 01 ford ranger but that was mostly new front end suspension and all new brakes and that's because i neglected the hell out of it for 8 or so years. It's never left me on the side of road love my little truck.

I have 2 rangers, 2008 ext cab 2wd possie, has 301,000kms still on its original motor/ transmission/ rearend. 2006 4x4 with 189,000kms same as other truck never has to replace anything major yet.

Just bought an 06 range xlt 4x4 for $5500 with 133k miles. Only needed to change the wheel bearings and everything else works great. I love this truck! Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I don't have any of these issues.

Mazda Bt-50 4 cylinder turbo diesel works fine with over 10 years of heavy duty use. (The BT-50 was launched at the Bangkok Motor Show on 22 March 2006. It shares its Duratorq/MZR-CD 2.5- and 3.0-liter diesel inline-four engines with the Ranger. In late November 2006)

Noticing the majority of this is V6 related glad I got the I4 and going to swap to a 5.0l V8. But going to do a teardown on the original engine and clean it to put it into a golf cart.

No, but the ranger then watch this video. Mine has 250k miles and those are TOUGH miles. Plus it was literally hit my a school bus and rebuilt from a junk yard. Runs like a champ.

The 3.0L also has issues with the intake manifold gasket, or at least my 1999 and a coworkers 2003 Mazda B3000 have. Usually fouls out the back 2 cylinders

Owned three Rangers, a 1999 (3.0), 2001 (3.0), & 2011 (4.0). Each one needed a rear pinion seal at differential at before the 100,000 mile mark. Not a difficult job, having the factory manual helps! But I'd buy another Ranger in a heartbeat if i had to. The 1999 was totaled in an accident. I sold my 2001 w/ 240,000 miles when I bought my 2011 that now has 165,000 and still going strong.

Just picked up a 2003 from a friend. The truck runs well when it starts. Definitely has a damaged multifunctional switch, possibly an issue with the locking sensor, some dirt bag did try to break in to the passenger side door and messed up the lock cylinder. It won’t start consistently, doesn’t show low voltage and no lights dimming but the starter won’t engage. I guess I’ll be messing with the starter to see what’s up with it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

The 2001 3.0 had a tough timing chain that was incredibly simple. I changed the water pump on one at 350k miles and removing the original water pump led to the timing cover cracking, so take that off to see the timing chain loose, put a new chain and gears on with the cover and it was back on the road.

One of the hidden great things about the 3.0 is not only it's simplistic timing chain, since it uses a Camshaft Synchronizer instead, but the fact it's also a non-interference engine. . . . It's overshadowed by the fact the Camshaft Synchronizer runs the oil pump, and if that goes out while driving the engine is pretty much going to be destroyed unless you stop *_IMMEDIATELY,_* but at least changing that thing is a hell of a lot easier than a timing chain on any vehicle. Just make sure to put some oil on the CSS every once in a while, since that is apparently what leads to their breakdowns.

My 08 4 cylinder has been fantastic, albeit only 105k miles at the moment. I drive day to day much but i take it on tons of road trips (been to 35 states with her). Only issue on this list for me was the pedal cable, i used the zip tie trick and it's perfect now. Appreciate the video regardless

I have a 1993 Ford Ranger that had the first clutch changed at 411956.7 km was the original clutch from ford. I think I will make it last a few more years. Runs great!

I have a 2007 4.0 v6 and that thing is a ripper. It has 160k on it and it still is in great mechanical condition. It’s got typical frame rust and a little starting on the door. Other than that it’s mint!

We change the oil and filter every 6 months (which is a 1,500 miles, because we only put 2-3K miles per year on our Ranger). We change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles. Our Ranger always shifted kinda hard until we changed the fluid. Now it shifts smooth as silk.

I own 2 2004 Rangers .1 from new and frame rotted out with 11,000 miles. Repaired with 2003 frame. Other one with new thermostat housing and harmonic balancer replaced. Still love them. Rust an issue because of over use of salt on New Jersey roads. Wished Ford still made the old style truck. You can keep the latest version.

I have 2004 ranger too! Got it in 2010 with 60kmi. Went all over the states and overseas with me. Now I live in NJ and it’s starting with the rust. After all these years. Got 235kmi on him and still strong. Take of them and they’ll take care of you. Love this truck.

Good trucks would not hesitate to buy another one

I've got a 97 2.3 very slow no power but indestructible. Love it just don't try tow or haul super heavy or you will destroy clutch

My 2004 3.0L has been a great truck but burnt a valve around 198k miles, drove it as a daily for another 25k miles with a misfire and a loss in power. Did a head job and put a new set of heads on it. And now it's still running good with 265k miles.

How did you find out it had a burned valve? Mine has 220k mile it still runs but it has no power at all it chugs at low rpms

@@braydonbeshirs4615 I replaced coil pack, plugs, and plug wires. And that didn't fix it. I did a ton of research and found out that one of the main faults on this motor if anything goes bad in it would more then likely be the heads. My dad's a old diesel mechanic and we was pulling all the plugs one day looking at them really good and when we pulled the plug on cylinder #4 it looked black and like it had a lot more blow by from the valve on it and my dad called it right then. Replaced the heads with som stock ported ones from a machine shop for 275$ and it runs like new again.

I just got a 3.0----2004-5- stick shift n only real issue is rough idle when you start it but you have to hold down the gas as you start it wait about 3 seconds n it will stay running but rough.after a few minutes of ideal calms down.butt if you just press the gas n without slowly release the gas.she cuts off

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer 4.0L with 297K miles on it. Just recently rebuilt the front end suspension and cooling system. I have had none of the issues mentioned in this video.

I have a 2003 manual edge plus RWD with UNDER 60k miles. I drive it daily for work. It was in mint condition before i got the great idea to turn it into a mud truck. One of the strongest utility vehicles made IMO. This thing has been crashed, pushed and pulled through sand and mud, hit from behind in reverse. The Ranger is unstoppable. These things have LOONNNGGGG lives. For the time being, theres enough rangers and parts to keep the current fleet on the road for quite a few more years. Stay on the pavement, guys. I NEED YOUR PARTS!!!

I've had 3 ford rangers 97, 03 edge, and now an 06 xlt 4x4 the only thing on the 06 was I just changed the fuel pump. It's got 147,000 on it love them all dang near as much as my dog, and wife.

One issue not mentioned in the video: -5 Speed Manual Transmission Clutch Slave Actuator Leaks- If hydraulic clutch fluid becomes contaminated, clutch is overheated, or excessive moisture enters the bell housing (swamping or coolant leak from back of the intake) the seals in the hydraulic clutch slave actuator can fail, leading to loss of clutch function. Replacing the slave cylinder requires removal of the transmission to access the actuator that circles the transmission input shaft, unlike first generation Rangers whose slave cylinders were external to the transmission and easy to replace.

My grandpa handed down his 2001 4x4 ranger to me after 10 years of it just sitting in his garage, only has 120,000km on it and zero rust, the only thing it needed was a new battery and some new ball joints, thing has zero rust despite it sitting in west coast rain for 20 years couldn’t be happier with it.

1997 xlt ohv 4.0 v6 4x4, 2008 dohc sport 4.0 v6 4x4, 2008 sport 3.0 v6 2x4, and a 2002 mazda b2300 2x4 all good trucks

I got my 2003 ranger 3.0l v6 about 2 weeks ago and with 102k miles she doesn't seem to have any major problems. Just drove it over 1000 miles to Kentucky to visit family

I have the same model. If you got erratic idle speed and less mileage , check for vacuum leaks. This normally is at the PVC valve where the tube/hose bends and collapses or separates. Replace this hose, and you will be good to go..

Bought a 2000 XLT, 4.0 , 4x4 , extended cab with 101,000 miles on it 2 years ago and I love this truck!! I’ve only put another 11,000 miles on it but it’s my hunting club / backup truck. It gets horrible gas mileage (15 to 17 mpg) but it will go anywhere in air conditioned comfort! For a 21 year old vehicle it’s in perfect shape. No dents, no codes, no tears in seats or cracks in dash, a/c and all switches and radio functions like new! The paint is fading but it had to be garage kept for most of its life. I’ve owned many new vehicles including a new in 2002 svt lightning and I’m just as proud of my Ranger as I was of any of them! The best part is, I don’t have a payment book!!

I have a 2000 XLT RANGER, 4x4 Ext. Cab. Red. no rust. I have had this truck for about 8 years. Only has 108,000 miles on it. Love this truck. It was idling rough and sometimes stalling out when it got hot outside. I would turn it on, raise the hood, and tap on the IAC. It idled right up. I finally got around to changing the IAC valve. runs smooth now. Though, I am now due for another oil change after 9 months. Love this truck. I sometimes have people come up and make me an offer on my truck. Nope, cannot sell.

I just bought a 2011 with 22841 miles on it it belonged to my neighbor who passed away he was a mechanic,the truck sat in the yard for six years and I asked about it one day and his wife finally let it go for $7000 this truck is super clean I’m psyched it’s a 4 L V6 4x4 XLT model blue in color without a spot of rust on it and very few scratches on it, coming from an F350 diesel lariat it’s hard to get used to its small size it rides a lot harder than I would expect and fuel mileage so far is only 20/22 on the highway I was hoping for better, but I had a I think it was a 99 Ford Explorer with the same motor and 22 was the average highway mileage

I got a 1989 Ranger, it’s been through hell from the previous owner. It had transmission work done to it by a VoTech student who had used it as his school project. It wouldn’t go into overdrive, so I took it to transmission shop to have it looked at. Turns out, the transmission was so jury-rigged that he was baffled that I had drove it there on its own power.. I didn’t tell him that I had been driving it for 9 months 😂

I have a Mazda b2300 2003 which is a ranger with a Mazda sticker slapped on. I have had engine oil leaks, transmission fluid leaks, coolant leaks, broken water pump, squeaking suspension (ball joints, shocks/struts). I have probably spent 10,000$ repairing the thing because it’s hard to work on such a small space. So if you do get the truck and it needs repair. I recommend repairing everything at once so you save money from taking the engine/transmission out every-time. Overall it’s never left me on the side of the road. These repairs were made over a 4 year span so about $2,500 a year on maintenance. From 40,000 miles to about 78,000 miles

One problem I've had occasionally: the centrifugal switch under dash on passenger side, occasionally sticks. Its meant to cut off fuel in case of collision. If you ever think your fuel pump crapped out, give that switch a jiggle before tackling pump.

My grandma has a 2001 Ford Ranger EV, weirdest car ever but its the only EV I like

2000 Mazda B3000. 226k miles. Very few issues in 17 years of me owning it. My biggest complaint is the relatively horrible gas mileage. @ 21 mpg on highway. You can get that good out of a 1990 full sized Ford with 5.0L V8, or the 300 inch straight 6 from the same era. I know because I had one of those too (V8).

Main issue on 1999 3.0 V6 is head gaskets, timing chain cover leak and camshaft sensor. Mine had all three.

2003 with 115k on it, it’s a beautiful vehicle.

we just bought a '98 5 speed stick, 2.5L 4 cyl 480k sum miles, almost no problems besides the suspension

Ive got an '07 FX4 that i bought with 61k miles on it, lets run down the repairs thus far. 1. Bed disintegrated due to rust, installed flatbed. 2. 5R55E transmission has broken twice, 3. Rear diff grenaded. 4. Thermostat housing 5. Suicide door latch. 6. Wheel bearing went, snapped the axle in the process. I cant wait to actually get this truck paid off so its not a daily driver anymore. Its a great little truck, but it cannot handle 30k miles/yr

I've owned a 2000 Ranger with 2.5L engine...never had issues!
