Watch If You Want to be the REAL Himura Kenshin (You Don't Need a Reverse Blade)

Спорт

In Rurouni Kenshin, the protagonist fights using the Sakabatō to protect his vow not to kill anyone. However, in real life, even if the edge wasn’t sharp if you hit someone’s head or neck with a steel stick, you could kill them. In the samurai era though, there were times when you didn’t want to kill the opponent but only put him out of action. Why? And would the samurai do that?
So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 400 years of history, will introduce traditional Iai, Kenjutsu, and Taijutsu techniques not to kill the opponent but only to steal his ability to fight back. You can learn how to become the real Himura Kenshin by watching this video, so please stay with us until the end. By the way, tickets for the 3-day training camp in Japan held by Seki Sensei and Let's ask Shogo are now on sale! Check out our Patreon page for more information!

The way I see it, the point of the reverse blade is such that he already has the muscle memory of fighting with a forward-facing blade so that if he used a normal sword he could end up killing someone just out of reflex, specially considering an important portion of his fighting style consisting of sword drawing techniques. At one point in one of the OVAs he almost killed a woman because she got too close to him in his sleep.

But also, we expect shounen manga protagonists and comic book superheroes to do things normal people can't. The sakabato is a metaphor for Kenshin's sincere desire to protect others while never killing again, but the sharp back edge represents the ever-present temptation to "turn face" and revert to being the Hitokiri/Man-Slasher again.

Well, to be fair (and as mentioned in the video), the way he hit people, he's definitely killing them. Just not cutting them.

@@Yominokun1They address that too. He rarely hits people in the head where there's a high risk of killing people with blunt weapons and otherwise Kenshin himself is a twink so he lacks mass and strength to kill people efficiently with blunt weapons, it was only after special training where he almost ended up killing his master that he learned to perform a chest strike strong enough to kill using the blunt side of his sword.

@@jackmcslay You obviously haven't seen the actual impact that a 7ish cm steel bar can have on a human body, even if they lack strength. Something which Himura does not lack by the way. Even if he would lack the strength, the speed at which he draws and hits people (remember, the force applied isn't just the physical strength, but the velocity too), is enough to crack ribs, break bones, and cause all sort of nastiness inside the body, something which in the timeframe has a pretty good risk of killing. Just not immediately. Oh, and he's hitting enough people in the head, a bit less in the series, but in the manga, it happens a lot more, with enough force to make them throw up blood and gush blood from their heads ;). Don't get me wrong, i love the series, but as i grew up, i did come to the realization that he'd definitely be killing people instead of knocking them out for a moment. He's sending people flying with the back of his sword, into walls and such ... . Hell, even knocking someone unconscious can be a serious medical condition, if they're unconscious for longer than a minute, it's a mild brain injury, longer than 15 and it's a serious one, and there's plenty of people who aren't moving after being hit.

@@Yominokun1You mean that in same series in which a guy goes around breaking trees with his fists for strength training it's somehow expected that people in it cannot withstand being hit with a metal rod?

As a stick fighter, I was thrilled to see Seki-sensei using "close-in" responses where his sheathed katana was wrapping around his body to neutralize his opponent. Using a short staff in confined spaces is very effective with the taisabaki demosntrated by Seki-sensei. Thank you!

Seki Sensei is amazing. I've been wondering if you will do a video with naginata? One of my favorite scenes in Heike Monogatari is when Taira no Noritsune attacked Minamoto no Yoshitsune's boat with a naginata in one hand and a sword in the other at Dan-no-ura. Do you and Seki Sensei think that is possible, or is it just "dramatic embellishment"?

I think there's also a bunch of weapons designed not to kill the opponent. A club or q baton is the most simple and known,as the police all over the world uses it. Japan, I think, was no exemption with it's kanabo. Modified to catch a sword we get jutte. I also heard that sai could be made dull on purpose to make it usable more like a baton. Would be interesting to see some techniques with these kinds of weapons.

I'd love to know his opinion on the kris. It strikes me as having an unusual guard, and I assume it was meant for parrying (the blade itself being more designed for stabbing than slashing), but I really know little, and would love to hear what an expert makes of it. Edit: it's a Javanese dagger with a wavy blade. The guard is asymmetrical with the larger part facing towards you, and the end of the handle curving away from you. I think I remember reading that when perfectly crafted they can ballance on their tip despite the asymetry.
