yeah lol I was wondering how he does his commentary, I thought maybe he does commentary for his first few runs, then does a bunch of practice runs, but then if you re-recorded commentary over a victorious practice run you'd lose all of the tension. So he really does a commentary for every run! my voice would be gone after a few hours

Ha! Not too scary, yet I get the joke... but I also understand his frustration. I remember playing Dark Souls needing like 5 Million souls to level, grinding for HOURS to get almost enough and died in pvp. While running back to my spot (offline) some random enemy ambushed me from a position they normally never went (rng), killing me before I could reach my bloodstain to retrieve my souls. All progress lost. HOURS lost. I almost threw my controller across the room haha!

What I find amazing is that you commentate over every single attempt, repeating the same things over and over again, when it would probably be easier to play the game without commentating (which would likely lead to less failed attempts) and then record the commentary over the successful attempt. That is some serious dedication.

I kind of feel like any time you pick up a megasphere you should be able to save your game. Yeah, ammo conservation is a thing, but other than that, each megasphere pickup marks the beginning of a segment where the previous events kind of stop affecting the future because you're in perfect condition.

Apparently Sunlust's entire design philosophy is to give you crippling anxiety every time you see a megasphere.

That thumbnail is pure gold.

I love your commentary in your classic doom playthrough for each video. The maps in this wad are just too tough to beat. Imagine if played UV fast monsters, I wouldn't even stand a chance

I respect the dedication to delivering the play-by-play commentary on the map every time, even if you're not sure whether this is the run or not. The willingness to repeat the script along with the gameplay elevates the finished product, making the final "100%" videos more entertaining since you never break and say, "screw it, I'll add voiceover in post-production".

It's strange, in any other game, enemy spam would be considered cheap design and artificial difficulty, but with Doom, it's actually key to making fights more challenging. Since the AI is so simple and all of the projectile based demons never lead their shots, the only way to make the enemies harder is to have a lot of them. Map design also has to be good too, the player can't just be in an open room in the middle of a million enemies like that, that would be stupid. While I at first thought this wad just spams enemies for cheap difficulty, it actually can make for legitimately challenging fights that aren't complete bullshit. Except, if a map spams the hitscan based demons, that's definitely bad design and cheap difficulty and whoever does that is terrible.

Slaughter maps aren’t my cup of tea, but I can admit, yeah, your comment explains exactly why they’re not “the worst thing ever”. It takes a lot of balance, planning, infighting, precise movements, and player skill to actually beat a slaughter map... well... well-designed ones, anyways. Things like Nuts are more gimmicky, but maps from WADs like Holy Hell and Sunder are totally doable with persistence. As a map designer, myself, yeah, you also have to understand how to balance difficulty from all aspects: player skill, if the player is pistol-starting or not in a multi-map set, what demons work better in which environments and paired with other demons, and about a million different variables. Open maps with shit-loads of demons are generally not fun at all, so you need things like damage floors, impassable objects (like floating skull piles), and terrain like boulders or small buildings to landmark the player as safe zones for items or cover; the truth is, the more open a map, the more demons you need to tax the player with, to create a sense of challenge. When designing more linear or crammed maps, a good map has demons that punish standing still (chaingunners and shotgun guys), and demons that require immediate attention to prevent being boxed in, like pinkies and revs. If backtracking, a good method is to add archviles, as it can force a player to play combat scenarios in reverse or in weird areas, which is a good way to keep the player from getting bored or hoarding/relying on their BFG. TL;DR: good WADs or slaughter maps should feel like an expansion of vanilla Doom, and build off the formulas and design of vanilla Doom, to be as fun as vanilla Doom.
