A lot to like in Waste Knights, but i wanted more of a relaxed game that what it turned out to be. It's more in the vein of This War of Mine or Ghost Stories in terms of its brutalness, and I'm not sure that helps the story. Which really is the highlight of the game. One i might keep, but house rule to make it more of a relaxed story experience than the death race it is. If you love that death race feel though, it will be perfect. You can pick it up here: www.miniaturemarket.com/areenwk2.html

I Kickstarted the game and I agree. The game is brutal. When I play narrative-based game, i want to know I have a shot going through the story :/ Good game overall. Looking forward to some of those house rules.

Also, "we're going to Bonnie Doon" is a hat tip to all the Aussies out there, and if you don't get the gag, its because it's very much for them.

I adore that film, i know its an Aussie classic, but so many of the beats and jokes in it work for a kiwi audience as well. And the family are just played with such love, makes me smile every time. "It's marbo, it's the vibe" is what i say when i'm losing people during a rules explanation as well.

@@3MBG Love it. I actually work with a woman who could be the kerrigans, though I'd never tell her. Always has photos of their Bonnie Doon property, and their Melbourne home is in a worse place than the Kerrigans!! Lost half their back yard to a freeway 25 yrs ago, used the compo to buy BD, but still live there. No wonder BD is so serene!

A (slightly) more chill Euro-style game in a similar vein to this is Posthuman Saga - there's more exploration focus, and you get to choose when combat encounters will happen, so those pain loops are avoided. It also adds some nice character development as you build out your skills and equipment. Would be interested to hear your comparative take if you ever get to try it.

For a shorter playtime but similar theme with frozen post-apoc and racing through the wasteland, upgrading and fighting enemies I highly recommend Last Aurora. It’s more Euro-style and competitive and solo only but one of my top 3 games of 2020.

Had my eye on Waste Knights for a bit but never looked that far into it so this video was perfect! I think I'll hold off though, I'm not super into storytelling in board games. I don't mind it in Eldritch or Gloomhaven, but it seems like it's a focal point in Waste Knights.

I gather that you can (in theory) AirBnB at the Kerrigan's house, for that relaxing break by the lake. Of course, late 2022 might be the time to try it. I've enjoyed the first scenario of WK solo, but not got it out since then. Need to give it a go with two players - playing multi-handed isn't my thing - I just make too many mistakes. As you say, I love the art and the world building.

For Fallout you should play co-op if you really want to experience the story. Competitive has other people sniping storylines you started. In co-op you're working together to follow the threads. Armor is a must. Half the Waste Knights campaigns do require expansions. They are good for more variable player counts and play times. The solo campaign is good for learning the game.

Yeah, i got the KS version 2nd hand and wasn't a backer, so just played with it all at once, not really taking into account what was expansion and what wasn't. Hence the disclaimer at the start.
