WASR - The BEST "Budget" AK?

The Romanian WASR 10/63 is a tank of a gun. It's not the prettiest AK in the world, but it has the right aesthetic and it's about as reliable as a gun can be. In a world of cheap American built AKs and expensive imports, the WASR still stands as a high quality, albeit rough around the edges, com-block AK that the average enthusiast can afford. Still built in the same Cugir factory in Romania that builds that country's military rifles, it's a perfect example of what the AK47 was designed to be: tough, reliable amd an absolute workhorse. I’ve owned a lot of different AKs - prebans, Arsenals, Krebs, Rifle Dynamics, etc. and my WASR 10/63 will stay right alongside the best of them. It’s a great rifle.

It's not just the best "budget" AK. It's one of the best AK's period. Chrome lined barrel CHF, forged trunnions, milled bolt. You're really not going to do much better than that with ANY AK 47, anywhere. Even the super expensive ones. Most "upper-tier" AK's are rip offs honestly. The WASR (or the RH10) are really the only AK's on the market that use actual military grade parts.

Zastava AKs are made well too. Also, a lot of Arsenals are straight up TDP guns. I know they're doing a lot of milled receivers now which might be the only important difference and even that isn't a downgrade by any means.

I always have wanted a AK and I always knew I wanted a classic. I didn’t want a tactical AK. That’s why I got my ARs. I ended up going with a AK built by James River Armory. I got it off classic firearms. It’s a polish AK and mine is dated 1967. It is a parts kit, with OG furniture, bolt and all the allowed imported parts and what is cool is James River Armory matched the “reproduction” serial numbers to the OG gun. So it’s parts matching which is cool. Out of the box beautiful finish all around. It is around $899 I think. I have around 250 rounds so far, no problems and one of my favorite shooters!

I have several AK's one of which is a 2015 WASR10. I took the century blonde wood furniture off and replaced it with romainian surplus wood stock and dong set and replaced the cheap century black plastic pistol grip with a romainian bakelite pistol grip. It runs like a singer sewing machine. Mine has the RAK 1 trigger in it. I also put a red star arms FCG pin retainer plate in it. My other AK's are mostly safe queens, the WASR10 is the one I shoot all the time. A/R's are boring. Everyone who shoots my WASR10 has a blast.

IIRC, when I got my AKM over 20 years ago, the common options were either the WASR or the SAR-1. I got the SAR-1. Fun rifle. I still have it. No muzzle device and it came with a mean trigger slap but I fixed the latter with a replacement from ALG. Before I finally decided to get an AR15 about 4 years ago, I sort of made my SAR-1 more "tactical" with Magpul furniture. It still gets hot even with the extra ventilation and mlok slots but it's a bit lighter than the wooden furniture.

Also, I personally think they're great and functional rifles with quality parts so I'm definitely not hating on the wasr, but when you compare it to other AK pattern rifles they tend to sit above American made rifles (excluding kit builds from high end builders) but bellow rifles and kits coming from Eastern block manufacturers. That's not to say you need anything better then the wasr especially if you don't run AKs alot, I'm just comparing their quality to the totality of what's available on the market.
