Washing with a vintage Hoover washing machine and spin dryer

Ever wondered what it might be like to use a vintage Hoover single tub washing machine for your laundry? This is just a quick demo and I don't use it every day, but hopefully you'll find this interesting. I did a white wash for some pillow cases, then rinsed and spun them out in my Hoover spin dryer. Some sequences have been shortened for time.
The 1321A and 3004A date from the mid/-late 1960s, and they're holding up pretty well for around 50+ years old.
As with any vintage appliance, especially one which mixes electricity and water, you should always get your machines checked over by a qualified electrician before plugging it in. As a precaution, make sure you use it in conjunction with a circuit breaker.
Let me know what you think!

    What a brilliant video. Brought back so many memories of my Mum using those exact same machines when I was a child in the 1970s. Your hairy arms are lovely. Just saying!

    I really like when people extract and reuse the hot soapy water instead of dumping it right into the drain! Nice job

    Thanks - it’s not exactly economical on it’s use of water, so I’d always re-use the water as much as possible especially when the laundry isn’t very dirty. Also, it would take ages if I was constantly refilling the tub! 😊

    These were surprisingly efficient if you followed instructions and didn't try to take shortcuts. Many impatient people complained about washing being tangled - all you had to do was put it in the spinner for a few seconds, take it out, give it a shake to separate the shirt sleeves then carry on as indicated. For a single person or a couple, they were ideal. Cost effective too, as you didn't have to waste the hot suds water each load.

    Oh this was SO lovely to see this particular Model! Thank You! My Great Aunt had one of these Single Tubs shown; it was inherited by my mother when she died, the only difference, she did not have the matching ‘Spinner', but there was a 'Mangle' attached to the Single Tub Machine, that ‘folded' down inside the actual Washer when put away, and so it did not impede on space when not in use. I am guessing because of the Mangle on my Aunts, that these Machines (unlike today) did not change over the years; they continued to manufacture the same Models for years... These days, it’s out this year, and in with the new - the very reason they would not last any where near as long as these great loyal old things! It was an effective and powerful Machine, though doesn’t at first look it when viewing the relatively small ‘Paddle’ on the side instead of the larger ‘Agitator’ on most.

    Just wondering doesn't the spin dryer use a spinning mat? Also is more or less slightly better then a twintub by the looks of this.

    Interesting. Very rare in the states: I’ve maybe seen 2, ever. Are this type still being made-marketed in the UK? I can’t tell you how odd it is to see a washer that heats the water for you. Ours just takes hot from the tap. Very cool. Nice clothes tongs, BTW. Handy if the water is “hotter than the hand can bear.”

    How do you know how much rinse water to add? I broke the spin drier on my father's AEG twin tub as a teenager by adding too much, and it mangled the bearings.

    Where is the drain pump switch

  • @ElectricUtopia

    @ElectricUtopia

    3 жыл бұрын

    There isn’t a dedicated drain pump switch. During the wash process, the water is circulated by the pump as a closed circuit through the machine. When you want to drain the machine, you just disconnect the drain hose and direct it into a sink or drain - this has the effect of pumping out the water without circulating it back into the tub. Hope that makes sense!

    That is a bit weird there isn't 'heat and wash' position on switch

  • @ElectricUtopia

    @ElectricUtopia

    3 жыл бұрын

    That would be a bit risky. There’s no timed shut-off mechanism to regulate the wash duration, so it would make it easy to accidentally heat and wash continually at a temperature too high for the laundry, and possibly at a temperature that could injure the user!

  • @TakJakbyLuksusowo

    @@ElectricUtopia Well, here in polish most of washers with heaters didn't have any thermostat ;) Polish washers have silimar switch to that Hoover, but with "wash and heat" position and heater lamp. GDR washers (WM 66) had only thermometer on front, and Romo washers (from Czechia/Czechoslovakia) had thermostats, but with weird adjustment range (for heating when motor is off) so if you heat wather during wash, you need to control temperature on your own. "Wash and heat" is good to heat only a bit, when you wash many of batch, or when you wash on high temperature to stay water hot.
