Hoover 0308 Wringer Washing Machine - An Overview
This is my recently restored Hoover 0308 wringer washing machine.
This is the very first model of washing machine designed and manufactured by Hoover UK. Production started in 1947. This is one of the earlier machines as it has a stainless steel pulsator. Later versions had a black plastic pulsator.
There is no on / off switch. The motor starts when you switch it on at the wall. I have added an inline waterproof switch for safety
The wash action is very vigourous. The maximum recommended washing time is only 4 minutes for cottons, and 1 minute for delicates.

This is a great washing machine. We should go back to them
As a youngster, I remember my mother having one like this. They were supplied as standard in Council houses in our town, at least until the late 1960s. My wife’s mother had an old hotpoint which was similar. She was still using it in the 1980s at least, if not later. In contrast, modern machines typically last 6 years in our experience.
These amazing little machines look so primitive to us now but they were so liberating to house wives way back when. Hours of knuckle bleeding drudgery reduced to a 4 minute wash cycle. I can remember when my mother upgraded from a hoovermatic twin tub after 25 years to an automatic machine and the amazing difference it made to her life. It would have been just the same in 1947.
That is a nice washing machine, very in tune with the glory of the early 20th century. Things looked shinier than, were more curvy and streamlined, and had a lot more chrome, porcelein, lit up control panels(especially with european and american machines), and just looked so much better than anything modern to be completely honest. I think I ought to add a 0308 to my list of washing machines to acquire despite I'm not a big enthusiast about wringer washers. I am however very much into rich-looking things like what was made back when this washer was made. At least it's not as rare as the first Frigidaire washing machine. Barely any of those exist and that is one of my ultimate dream washing machines.
At last a man who knows how to use a washet PROPERLY
Amazing machine, even plays music.
Excellent restoration work Stephen, like straight out of the factory.a great rollover action because this tub is deeper and thinner than the later models it really does whirl the clothes around well !!
Looks just like my AEG from 1956 that I still use today

Oh fricking hell. I bloody want a vintage AEG with a lit up control panel. Like the Lavamat Deluxe from 1963, for example. And the Miele Automatic 410, 416 and De Luxe 421 will do as well. And a De Luxe 423 or something like that as well for that matter. I only have a 1959 Hoovermatic, a 1997 Miele W806 Premier and a (possibly) 2000 Miele W906. The Hoovermatic is in pieces, and my W906's motor is very stiff when I screw it's 4 screws all the way in after I replaced it's bearings and brushes.
We had one like this in late 50’s in South Africa when I was a kid.

@@videos3820 Good to know! I've also got a good collection of single tubs and early twin tubs that I'm going to restore as I get the time. It's so wrong that people just abandon them in forests and on the side of the road.

Would you like to upload some of the restoration process here? That would be fantastic
Post would have been better without crappy club music playing over it.

I agree.
I would love to buy one of those. Where can I get one?
Wow must have been a very early hoover single tub washer as it is not fitted with a heater element in base of the machine or have mechanical drain pump as in later models as the heater fitted later models had larger almost rectangular drainage grids as I recall as my late mum had a single tub hoover washer with heater and mechanical pump without the ringer and a hoover spinarinse spinner in the early 70s
