finding this now, I always felt that in the song she chooses physical intimacy when she realizes her partner may be in love with someone else. So she finds her comfort in the intimacy but it still leaves her heart feeling used and ignored, like how you mentioned, no one really sits and hugs a washing machine

i think her asking for the dirty shoes to be tossed in her washing machine heart is also her way of asking for emotional intimacy from her partner. It can feel nice when someone opens up to you and trusts you with their baggage, and so she doesn’t realize it’s damaging her- or she thinks that that’s what love is supposed to be like, so she may to some degree desire it.

that's a great point!✨ she may subconsciously want to create the illusion of more emotional intimacy or just try to welcome it in...in a way? i agree with your point, maybe she truly believes that's how love "works". i personally don't think her partner really wants that closeness and that's why the protagonist is feeling the lack of emotional intimacy. it should be a two way street, i don't get the sense that it is in this song

Very interesting take, I like it. I felt the lyrics "I know who you pretend I am" as the partner is dreaming of the one who got away, and the protagonist is the rebound / distraction.

“Toss your dirty shoes” i also think that this refers to the fact that shoes, dirty shoes, would’ve been used , either out in a dirty mud , or just used on the floor, making them germs dirty , and very used… Used being the key word here, someone else has him, i think the term dirty shoes refers to his heart, or maybe even him. and that they belong to someone else and that he always ends up coming back to her, to clean his “dirty” , used shoes.. basically saying that the antagonist/ romantic interest, Is using her heart to clean up and use her to get over other people, as a back up, someone he can come too , to f#%# / get attention to feel loved after this… and as @summersentiment says. The protagonist is very aware of how she’s getting treated but is okay with it, and maybe even starting to realise that he/she/ is messing with them. and it seems like they’re starting to get more aware of the situation. and maybe get tired of it

that literal explanation of verse 2 makes SO MUCH SENSE. i always thought of it as the protagonist intentionally ignoring that her partner may be cheating on her. but when we look at it from a literal perspective, it really goes in line with the storyline presented in verse 1 too 😭

That’s really cool to have it stated with words from someone eles The way she wants her partner to vent anytime he wants for me it shows how she wanna feel more worthy with him or how he can “trust her” to dumb all these stuff on her
