i took the line "went to your room thinking youd feel something, but all i found was your burning body waiting" to mean she was in search of an emotional connection with the person but found they only wanted a physical/casual relationship

I interpreted as a disconnection from your own feelings, one can try to go to the room to "feel something" because the room is private and maybe you are more likely to be vulnerable when people are not around.

i think this persepctive. It feels to me like Mitski presents all these stories and situations that tend to happen during one's younger ages, especially during Puberty; Short/Silly love, sex, drugs, questioning her position in society. She uses these metaphors to present depression, insecurities, and loneliness. For example one may listen to Dan the Dancer and think that it's of Mitski's first time, which I'd agree with, yet there are so many layers in which one can interpret the true meaning of this story. I believe this album shows Mitski's harmful mindset in her adulthood, reminiscent of the love and emotion shed feel during her young adulthood , calling it Puberty 2.

This is probably it. Only that rather than reminiscing, all these things are happening right now in the viewer's adulthood. A sort of late bloom situation. Youve already passed through your biological puberty, and youre only experiemcing these things people associate with puberty late into your 20s.

“And I’ve been a forest fire, I am a forest fire. And I am the fire, and I am the forest, and I am a witness watching it” is such a beautiful way of saying, I am the problem and I am the victim and I am the bystander altogether. Mitski’s lyrical genius is at work.

I personally disagree with your interpretation of a burning hill. She's not happy, she's just tired, tired of being disappointed and used. She's going to work, doing boring mundane things and trying to love the little things to fill up that hole. Depression is slowly making her decay she doesn't know herself anymore and doesn't have the energy of doing anything risky because of how scared she is of getting hurt because she KNOWS she wouldn't be able to handle it. She's trying to find happiness in the little things so she doesn't fall apart because she feels she has a responsibility to live and exist but she doesn't feel a purpose

i like to think that the album's title comes from how after all this self destruction, she sort of reinvented herself. it was like a metamorphasis - a second puberty. but that also makes me feel pretty fucking defeated. i'm barely 16 and i've had enough. i'm four attempts in ffs. i've been thinking about my future more often lately and it sucks how you can't just turn 18 and magically mature and stop being sad and unpredictable and horny and impulsive and awkward. it seems like this second puberty lasts for most of your twenties but i've already had enough of my first puberty. the lie of maturity i've been told my whole life is being reconstructed and honestly it sucks. sorry for the rant. i just want to be grown.

hi kiddo!! I don't know if this will help at all, but I'm currently 21 (22 this year) and my childhood/teenagehood was terrible. abuse, bullying, poverty, etc. I was planning on ending at 18 actually. but here I am, three years after and I've come to find my life is extraordinarily better. like, so good I didn't think it would ever be this good. I have a partner, a stable job, a lot of my own personal life goals have been met already and I'm only 21. I'm so unbelievably sorry that you're so young and already so burdened with what life has done unto you. you're allowed to be angry, and frustrated, and resentful. but please keep going, because from one chronically mentally ill person to another, it DOES indeed get better. it will take time but the time WILL come and you will thank your past self for still pushing forward. you're a kid, so don't be hard on yourself. the world is hard enough and you need to be your own safe haven. learn, live, please live. you've got a destiny worth fulfilling and someday you will find yourself staring back at the empty void you escaped with nothing but a garden of hope ahead of you. don't worry about meeting anyone else's expectations; when you find yourself at a point where you're satisfied with life and someone criticises it, tell them this - just because your mountain touches more of the sky than mine doesn't mean mine isn't touching it at all. Extraordinary means different things to different people, and nobody but you knows the full context of your life. you're gonna make it, I know it kiddo. with love.

I feel you SO much. Im also 16, close to 17, and mate is this hard. I dont think ive been through that much in life but I may be underestimating it. I dont even know, tried to write something coherent here and ended up about a lot of stuff, but the important part is that I am now reflecting about some things and it kinda made me realize about some of the ways I damage myself, so thanks for commenting and helping a random person 8 months later do something. And thanks for being alive, because it is worth it, for the good moments, for making a good life. Even if those moments are scarce now, they will slowly become more and more frequent, better, you just gotta live to experience them. If some of this helps a bit im glad. If not, Im sorry, just know there is people that ubderstand you, even tho its 1 am and I should really go to sleep, even if our mother tounge is not the same and we are absolute randoms on the Internet, there are people who can relate to you, who can and are willing to understand you, care for you, try to help you. So live to meet them. Live to listen to the next mitski álbum. Live and keep going. Please, stay alive. Sorry for all of this, Just wanted to say something.

i do love these interpretations, though i think ascribing them to being autobiographical in most cases can be misleading. in an interview, mitski has said that when she writes, she focuses on a specific feeling and the songs are written to express that feeling as best as possible (rather than pulling from lived experiences) also: this analysis made me realize how much of a heteronormative lens ive been viewing her songs, i didnt even consider a queer perspective on once more to see you but it makes sm sense woah

this entire album reminds me so much about Aiko Tanaka. it's really sad that she couldn't get away from that rabbit hole and all her story it's hopelessly catastrophic, as well as the rest of the Oyasumi Punpun mangá, in most parts. me as a Mitski fan have a place in my heart for this manga and if you like Mitski as well I recommend you to read it, unless you have some triggers or are in a rock bottom phase of your life, cause it will destroy you, certainly.

I think unlike the rest of the album, it does present sex as something positive in "Clifton"'s life - the whole thing about his "bedroom dancer". beyond the obvious sexual metaphor I think it could also represent some sort of emotional intimacy and closure he finds in his partner.
