Lyrics:
Happy came to visit me, he bought cookies on the way
I poured him tea and he told me it'll all be okay
Well I told him I'd do anything to have him stay with me
So he laid me down, and I felt Happy come inside of me
He laid me down, and I felt happy
Oh if you're going, take the train
So I can hear it rumble, one last rumble
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you
I was in the bathroom, I didn't hear him leave
I locked the door behind him and I turned around to see
All the cookie wrappers and the empty cups of tea
Well I sighed and mumbled to myself again, I have to clean
I sighed and mumbled to myself
If you're going, take the train
So I can hear it rumble, one last rumble
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you
And if you're going, take the moon
Then maybe I will see you, in the night I'll see you
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you

I just thought of something. at 1:54 when we see the smoke in the room, my first thought was that it was incense and that she was trying to clear the negative energy in the room. This is an Asian tradition. However, when it zooms out, it shows that it's a cigarette. This is an Americanized, self-destructive way to cope that pollutes the room instead of fixing anything. maybe I'm reading too much into it but I'm asian american like mitski and I haven't seen anyone else say this yet

this song is so under appreciated. so many people love to pretend like mitski doesn’t write about race, but she very clearly does, and this is one of the prime examples. it bothers me that so many white people in mitski comment sections get pressed when women of color express their relation to this song, when it so clearly is about race.

as an asian american woman myself, i have to say this video nailed the message about race and beauty... especially at 1:52 when you see the white woman's profile and then the asian woman's and you can feel the inadequacy in how alien you seem to look in a white society. and of course this setup doesn't end well for the white women either. even if they look ideal at first because they have the whiteness you'll never have, they're trapped in the same system and even they will never be enough to satisfy men's expectations

Imagine if she never found out. Her not fitting into the beauty norm, so ugly in the eyes of the killer, protected her. i don't think he found her ugly necessarily. he just used her as a cover up because he thought she was either too insecure to leave, she didn't have the funds to leave, or she didn't have family or friends to run off to in that country if she were an immigrant. my filipino grandmother married my white american soldier grandfather post-WW2, and she's confided in me with the extreme loneliness she felt coming to this country when she was a 19 year old without any family or friends close by. because she didn't have any agency, it made her not want to leave even though she was unhappy (not due to abuse or even racism from my grandfather, but because she was too young when she got married and didn't know what she wanted). i can assume that was probably a common experience.

a small detail i love about this mv is that when the wife trips at 0:39 the husband gives her a disapproving look, almost out of disgust at how clumsy and 'messy' his wife is, yet at 3:23 when the wife trips again on the stairs, this arguably saved her life as she then was able to kill her husband and get away.

Becuase racial comments make people upset, we like to just ignore that and live at peace. It was Morgan Freeman that said, in response to "How do we stop racism" "We stop talking about race" Not liking for a woman for her race is just as trivial as not liking her for not having eyes that you like or hair that's a fun texture or a culture you are interested in. When we stop alienating these people we van accept them for them. Imagine alienating people for having blond hair, and blonds screaming about how horrible that they arent being accepted, if we stop making it this huge deal I think people will find that there are always "exceptions to the rule". There will always be people interested in one another for whatever reason. Makes me sad that when we reflect on these issues people get aggressive, it's like picking at an open sore. Just let the sucker heal already.

I'm like, so many years late, and I've listened to this song on repeat for years without ever bothering with the music video. Then today out of curiosity I searched to see if anybody had done a video essay on Mitski/her music. As I was watching this(as a non-American Asian/Chinese person myself) I was pretty impressed, the sort of content right up my alley - and then the plot twist. I was *genuinely* surprised. After years of familiarising myself with all sorts of plot twists, tropes, human folly, true crime, real people - you sort of just learn to expect certain outcomes and plot twists in the media you consume. This video is like, 5 years old, and somehow it managed to grab me by the throat and fling me into the wall at full speed with that twist ending, holy shit.

It's mostly Douglas Sirk - All That Heaven Allows or Magnificent Obsession but there's a definite Wong Kar Wai vibe too. Or postmodern films that play with Sirk's style like Todd Haynes's Far From Heaven. The end is very Hitchcock though definitely - I'd say more Psycho than Vertigo.

Maybe this allegory is trying to ambiguously explore the mentality of a person who would cheat: what their motivations are. It's not love. His adultery is painted as a killing act: a desire to control, and penultimately hurt these women, and eventually Mitski (when she finally confronts the truth of his motivations i.e. not because she wasn't beautiful or worthy of love; but because he's a killer. ) His desire to be devious, or feel devious in love manifests a clear line between good and evil in the narrative, when in reality; it's much harder for people in love to sever themselves from harmful and subtly abusive partners. What an empowering reminder.

Nah cuz as a mixed japanese chick this song hits so hard for me. Growing up especially in my younger years I compared myself to my white peers and felt as if I looked different in a negative light. Soon enough though my features became more appreciated and I've learned to love myself. What melts my heart is that my boyfriend loves the shape of my nose. I've always hated it, it holds a high-nose bridge and looks like a beak, yet he says it's one of his favourite features about me.

The whole time I was wondering why the fuck this girl was losing whole-ass chunks of hair like she had alopecia or something 😂 🤦🏻‍♀️😳Then I got to the basement scene and boy oh boy did I get answers. Jesus Christ! Lol. This is the one of the most incredibly thought provoking music videos I’ve seen in so long. I feel like music videos used to be about so much more than people just dancing around naked or walking on the beach or in big, empty mansions with literally no connection to the actual song they’re singing. Having the ability to put out a visual interpretation of a song to express its meaning and purpose through compelling storytelling and sometimes really poignant choreography that you can tell had so much effort put Into it and thought behind it is such an incredible opportunity that I feel like not enough artists take advantage of. There are so many songs that never would have been as popular or meaningful as they eventually became if they didn’t have an accompanying music video. It can only help. And it doesn’t need to be this insane mini film with a whole storyline and hidden Easter eggs to resonate with people. There’s nothing wrong with just dancing; Beyoncé has music videos that are mainly about the choreography without a complex story or dramatization but she really goes to great lengths to come up with choreography, wardrobe, locations, settings, extras, and backup dancers that stay true to the song and the album. For “Black Is King” that was released in tandem with the Lion King premiere, she actually traveled to different parts of Africa in Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa and collaborated with local artists and dancers to highlight different traditions that mean a lot to the people that live there. You can tell her goal was to not appropriate their culture, but to immerse herself and then us as listeners in this beautiful and rich culture that might be a little more foreign to audiences back in the states and around Europe, really all over the world. That entire project; you could tell by the end of the very first song that the number one priority for her was authenticity and respect for the culture and its people while also shining a light on local artists who worked so hard with her on everything and deserve more attention and recognition than they often get. Ok. I just realized I’ve written an entire fucking Beyoncé novel in the comment section for a music video that has literally nothing to do with her. I’m so sorry haha. Feel free to reply to this comment with all the “fuck you”s your heart desires. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😈 Bottom line. I love this fucking video and I love Mitski even more and I’m really excited to see what she does next!😻🙏🏼
