glad i found someone else who also thinks this song is scary (but in a tragic way) 🥺 maybe because i watch too many paranormal/psychic/mediator videos, or maybe because my culture still believes deeply in superstition, i always see our protagonist as a literal ghost haunting a restaurant, being held in that place by this invisible barrier that won't let her go anywhere or move on. i see the repetition of the chorus as her being stuck in this like time loop where the scene around her constantly replays the moment he broke up with her, making her tortured and thus she's asking for "help". and maybe that's why people know about her story because she's kind of like this urband legend in this town lmao happy spooky szn 👻

your more literal interpretation is super interesting! 😊 makes it EVEN MORE HEARTBREAKING! it also makes "help" and "did you hear about the girl..." lyrics super eerie and sad! ty for sharing! i especially like what you said about the repetition of the chorus & her maybe being an urban legend 👀

Something i like about this song is the effect the bridge has in the listener. Over the chorus she sings the break-up, is personal for the protagonist but not for the listener. But when you get to the bridge she changes the narration from first person to second person, and puts you inside the moment it all happen as the boyfriend. I always feel like seeing the break up in the chorus as a person in another table but on the bridge you're the boyfriend.

Omg, I’m so glad I found your channel, I’ve been binging all your Taylor Swift’s videos all day! Although I’m able to understand and speak English pretty well, it’s still not my first language, so sometimes I need some help to fully give meaning and lyrically appreciate songs better, specially with Taylor’s music and you’ve helped me a lot with that. Also, I always thought of the “But if you ever think you got it wrong I'm right where you left me” part as if the protagonist was telling the person who broke up with her that no matter how ‘wrong’ their life could get, the protagonist got it worst because she’s frozen in time, etc. Like a ‘don’t worry about your life going wrong, it can always be worse, just look at me’. I don’t know if that line can also mean that or if I’m just misinterpreting it because of the language barrier lol

one reason why i think that song is so haunting and scary its also taylor's vocal delivery, the way she drags her voice throughout the verses sounds like a tired and hopeless person, the repetition of "I" like she is having a hard time to talk or even find the right way to put her feelings into a sentence, or even the way she sings in a higher tone as she enters the chorus like she is hurting and crying in pain. another reason would be the word choices, they are very morbid and violent. "strangers get BURIED" "matches BURN" "corner I HAUNT" "glass SHATTARED" "if our love DIED young" taylor uses a lot of that in songs like all too well 10 min and my tears ricochet too. i have a similar but slightly different interpretation over the "pages turn and stick to each other" line. i see that as another instance of time passing, but for others instead of her, bc everybody its writing new pages on their lifes, the pages are turning and sticking to each other, meaning that we can't change the past and people are living their lifes without being able to go back, since a lot of our decisions in life are permanent. but the protagonist is stuck in time with all of her blank pages, stuck in the moment where she was left, being unable to turn the pages of her own book and let them stick to each other, letting the past go.

I enjoyed watching your video. Always so interesting. This song makes me think of Edward Hooper’s paintings, full of loneliness. I also like the way Taylor sings the word restaurant: I hear the word “rest” as staying motionless like the protagonist who is frozen or sadder, like the dead who rest in peace forever as the last line says “you left me no choice but to stay here forever” . She collects dust because her heart and spirit are broken and her life is turning into dust.

I loved the demo of the pages sticking together as I never understood that line! IMO this is one of Taylor's best songs. I like the idea of it being a diner, but with the white cloth I think I pictures something more fancy, for some reason at a round table. I think I got frozen for a year but have thawed out.. gonna go figure out what my fave shade of lip gloss is 💄💖

12:13 “pages turn and stick to each other” personally, what i think about this is the passing of time. like we have several books that have pages stick to each other because they have been in the shelf for so long long, but no one is reading it. so maybe, that line refers to the protagonist being abandoned by other people/all of the people he/she knows to the point that all the memories of life have been forgotten or no one has access to, not even the protagonist itself idk, this is a little confusing to explain lol but think about The Midnight Library as the book pages that got stick to each other. the protagonist cannot live the “what could've been's” (TML ref) of life because it got abandoned by someone/everyone

That line of the song that says "Glass shattered on the white cloth, everybody moved on" also speaks of a Jewish tradition in a marriage, I also like to make that association because then she mentions "wife, children". Maybe her love interest is jewish and she’s picturing a wedding. Love your analysis ♥️, honestly this song made me worry about Taylor, (I’m aware that I do not know her personally) just hope she is doing fine.

29:33 time went on for everbody else, she won't know it.. what I thought of this line when i first listened to the song (and kept the same thought) is that not that she wants to ignore time or a fundamental rule that exists whether you pay attention to it or not like you said when we're not participating in something the rules don't apply but that she has to just sit there and process it for as long as it takes her. Since it is probably her own thoughts of what people might be assuming of her I think she is aware of time passing and just chooses to let it pass and in her thoughts/opinion that people think she won't know it. But I think she does. she is aware of time passing but she just doesn't care. idk if i've been able to convey what i'm trying to say... hehe
