    Business Card scene gives you the information on if Paul Allen was the one murdered. All the man are self absorbed and lack any identity. They look, act, and speak the same way. Patrick going psycho is breaking the lack of identity as he finally finds who he is. A murderer. The murder does represent the climbing of the corporate ladder in itself, but it's not in his head and he does murder Paul.

    All possible outcomes: 1) He killed someone else thinking he was Paul 2) He killed Paul but lawyer is one of the other delusional buisnessman who don't remember other people name himself. 3) He killed the guy he wanted to kill but his real name was not Paul and Patrick just imagined that his name was Paul because he was too indulged in his own fantasy. 4) He didn't killed him and only fantasized about it to the point he couldn't tell right from wrong. 5) He killed him but the prescription of time in Patrick's head is messed up, perhaps he killed him 1 day ago when Paul JUST landed back to country but he thinks he killed him many days ago. 6) Lawyer knows Paul is dead and Patrick is mentally unstable so he decided to cover up Paul death and decided to tell lies to Patrick so he zips his mouth and doesn't think too much about it(unlikely). You can make more assumption of Paul death tbh

    His early work was a little too pedestrian for my taste. But when American Psycho came out in '00, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole performance has a clear, crisp sentiment, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gave his career a big boost. He's been compared to Jack Nicholson, but I think Bale here has a far more bitter, cynical expression of fun-loving rage.

    This fits nicely with the realtor scene earlier in the movie, she also didn't acknowledge that there were bodies in the apartment and told Patrick to not make a scandal, meanwhile here we have the Lawyer who says that Paul Allen isn't dead even though we see the entire movie that he is. My theory is that both the woman and the lawyer are psychos (just like half of the people in the movie) like Patrick and didn't want Paul's murder to blemish their career, so the realtor acts like there weren't any corpses to not let the apartment's price fall and the lawyer lies that Paul Allen is alive and doesn't acknowledge Patrick's confession so he isn't seen as the lawyer to a psychotic killer like Bateman. In the end it's all to keep the facade, just like how Bateman keeps his.

  • @injetavel279

    @injetavel279

    Жыл бұрын

    It's also suggested in the movie that one psycho can see through the other's facade (like the realtor and the lawyer saw through Patrick's), in one of the final scenes of the movie Bryce sees right through Ronald Reagan (who's on the tv) facade and says that he's a psycho, that makes me think that Bryce was also a psycho. Going in deeper there's the question of "did the investigator know that Patrick is the killer?" And that makes us think "If only psychos can see through the facade and we don't know if the detective did see through Bateman's then there's a chance that the detective is also a psychopath". Just to remember that a psycho doesn't need to kill, there's plenty of psychos in the real world with giant careers and who are seen as common folk, so it's possible.

    My headcanon: Patrick did kill Paul and he killed all of those other people two. But everyone he killed will be swallowed by the shallowness of the society around him that he's tried so hard to fit into. Prostitutes and homeless that he admits to the lawyer he killed, forgotten by society, the cops won't try to appear weak and won't disclose that they lost a few officers in a shootout, the building owners he shot the guard in won't want their tenants to feel unsafe so they'll make an excuse, the apartment lady is the obvious ones. Patrick is a monster, and he can never be found out (except by his secretary at the end who loves him too much to say anything), because the society around him is much more monstrous and shallow. He is essentially one of the few people in the film honest to his own intentions, and the rest are only living to the next business card or dinner rez. I think a good summary is that he is a serial killer and is somehow trapped by a bigger monster: materialism? Idk but yall get what I mean

    To understand this movie keep in mind 3 things 1. The narrator is a narcisstic psychopath 2. The narrator is the one telling the story and is most likely twisting the truth 3. The mind of the narrator is messed up and he often gets lost in his delusions In the end the point is that, as Bateman says, the inside doesnt matter. In this world outward appearance is all. Even if the murders happened, no one saw it... theres no evidence... and as such noone will believe it.

  • @jonoddur6400

    No it wasn't in his head. His lawyer was doing his job, faking his alibie. People say that it was all in his head because the there was no blood trail or it stopped suddenly when he was dragging the body of Paul though the lobby of the building and he met his friend outside, point is, everyone is so material, the world he lives in is so sick, that they didn't SEE the blood trail, like we the viewers didn't either, everybody is so fixated on themselves. Obviously he is dragging a body and shoving it into the trunk of the car but the only thing his friend asks him is where did he get that fancy bag that the obvious fucking body is inside of. People in that world are dull and out of touch with everything human. Like when the real estate woman covered up the murders in Paul's apartment so the value of the place wouldn't go down, knows he is the killer when he comes back to the apartment, but asks him to leave and don't come back. In the book, the place is all decorated with flowers, so the smell would be good and not any smell of the death that occurred there. The world that Patrick Bateman lives in is much more sinister then himself.

    The great thing about this movie is that everyone was getting everyone’s name wrong all the time. So the director leaves it possible that he really did kill Paul Allen, and that lawyer had dinner with someone who he only thought was Allen. But maybe he really did have dinner with Paul Allen and Bateman is completely nuts and all the murders were in his head.
