"Because I want to fit in." These 6 words explain entirely the plot of this story. He knows these people are living crazy lives but somehow they take pleasure in it. Patrick Bateman is the embodiment of that feeling when you think everything is going well and you have a voice in your head saying you look great and you're charismatic, respectable, etc. Then that voice slowly starts making you doubt yourself. Makes you wonder if you fit in as well as you think you do. You go to the bathroom to check your hair, your clothes, and even your body. Until eventually, you'e completley self conscious and feel like an alien, like everyone is watching you. Any time anyone speaks to you, you tell yourself you said the wrong thing straight after. But still, somehow, that confident voice in your head telling you that youre attractive and funny keeps nattering on so you try to act that way whilst thinking "my gosh im such a fake loser" Youre not. Christian Bale nailed this performance so well, that every time I see him in another movie I just see Bateman. Even his popular films like the Batman trilogy. This is also one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It's not really supposed to look like comedy, but his antics and massive overreactions to insignificant problems is timeless.
Lmao I love it when he’s walking into work headphones blaring “walking on sunshine” 😂 one of my favorite scenes
Fun fact: For the scene he is being interviewed by William Dafoe's character, they edited 3 takes mixed together- detective knows he is the killer, suspects he is the killer, and doesn't think he's the killer and the editors mix up these clips to keep the audience guessing. Also, a CD case is shined into his eye and when Bateman doesn't react, it confirms he is dead inside.

This is an old comment, but in that scene the washing lady is telling Patrick that the sheets are clean, and that there’s no stains. Then the lady that walks in is confused because there are no stains; it’s just in Patrick’s head.

@@loggersviii1228 No, the washing lady is saying that the sheets are dirty over and over (along with some other things that aren’t entirely relevant) I speak Canto and that is what she is saying. Huge misunderstanding of the whole movie: There is no Patrick Bateman. All the characters are basically the same (that's why they always mess up his name, dont recognize him, etc-... They guys all look the same, do the same things... Thats what the novel / movie wants to show us: All this consumerism dulls your personality, it takes away your individuality ). That's why Bateman (presumably) resorts to murdering people. That's the only way for him to actually FEEL something
