I think it’s thrashier than the 9”’s material, even the black album. This and hardwired sit somewhere between Justice and black for me. Not as progressive as justice, but thrashier and less radio than black.

I loved how much it felt like a 3rd Load album! Especially the Alice In Chains vocals in YMB! And the slap bass intro in SMLA reminded me of Cure (Also, finally a bass (and drum) intro after all these years!) I also found the lyrical and melodic homages to Broken, Beat and Scarred and Misery cool too. I actually like the sound on 72 better than Hardwired, for one big reason: THE BASS! it's so much clearer, fatter here. I loved Inamorata so much, man. yeah, it's Sabbath-y, but it's also "My Friend Of Misery"-y at points... which is one of my absolute favourite Metallica songs.

@Crazy man I loved Darkness at the first listen. It was a gutwrencher in the first order. And 72 was fun. Screaming Suicide ended up being a great message for myself. The problem I have with most of the album is that, there really aren't more, like, SONGS. The rest is like they kinda checked their musicianship at the door. This is my first impression. It's not flattering, but... :/ What can I say. I'll figure this out.

One thing I've noticed about Metallica on the last two records is they have a serious problem moving from the tonic and building a chord progression. Too Far Gone is actually the only example on the new record where the chorus has a discernible progression of chords. It's quite hard to create catchy or impactful vocal melodies when your chords are static. If you go back and listen to basically any other era of the band, they never struggled writing a chord progression, but something has gone a bit strange in this era. Still, I think this album is much better than Hardwired. The second half of this record is really exciting stuff, and some of James' vocal parts were really moving actually. His voice is definitely getting stronger with age, and that's impressive. All in, I'm pretty happy with this record.

Finally a 72 Seasons review I agree with 😎. Sure, it's not at the level of their 80s album, but it's still a great album with great variety and, for me personally, it's definitely better than Hardwired and even Death Magnetic. I've read several comments saying that this album is like a mix of Hardwired and the Lord albums and I'm like "how!?". This album, like you say, it's definitely faster overall than Hardwired, and even the slower tracks are not that bad. Something else is that, while the album does have a pretty similar sound to Hardwired, I did feel an evolution. In Moth into The Flame we saw James singing in a more melodic style that sounded quite different to previous albums, and here he expands a lot on that kind of more melodic vocal lines, which I really liked.

Yes, some songs on Hardwired are too long, the solos are not great, but the songs have themes. You read the song titles, listen to the lyrics and it all makes sense. There is an atmosphere to each track, so you can actually tell them apart. Plus some cool clean intros, some very memorable riffs and vocal lines. 72 seasons is basically a Wanna-Be-Hardwired, but it lacks most of the points I mentioned.

I disagree. The mix and master sounds very different. Also this one has a much more Load era feel.

A few songs sound like Manunkind and Am I savage with a Load/Reload vibe thrown in. I stand by Re-Hardwired 😎

72 Seasons is much better than I expected, I love this album! James's vocals are definitely a huge highlight for this album imo, he does something cool on each song on the album and there's lots of cool riffs. This album tops Death Magnetic/Beyond Magnetic and Hardwired for me, and that's saying a lot because I freaking love those albums. I'm honestly blown away, this album exceeded my expectations based on the singles! Long live Metallica! #MUYA
