Same album over and over and over again isn't good. You could say that it is... overkill haha... No change, no evolution, no real excitement for me. If you like the bands sound that is from their early days, listen to those albums. Metallica has shown that it can evolve and still kick ass. That's exciting.

1987! right!
I can't believe I'm saying this, but this is the first record where I felt like the guitar solo on most the songs hurt them more than help. Kirk sounds like a little kid screaming in the corner saying look what I can do but what he's doing is elementary. It just adds nothing.
As far as Metallica playing Sabbath, the middle of You Must Burn was killer! Honestly, there's something about this album's songwriting I find really captivating. Almost any song I put on, I'm thinking "this song.. could this be my favorite track on the album?". Anyways, I'd say they put some real love and effort into crafting these tunes, no tracks really feel like simple radio singles nor underdeveloped filler. They are songs that grow on you. They tend to repeat sections longer than necessary, but it's easy to get lost in the music and have an hour pass in no time.

13:03 THIS!! RIGHT HERE!!! there’s good stuff on this album, but it’s all bogged down by endless repetition. Like most of the songs need 2-3 mins lopped off, or the album as a whole needs almost 30mins totally cut 🤷♂️

Exactly what I have been saying since it came out. It's pretty bad if even someone like myself can recognize it that quickly... If they just learned how to edit, or had someone who could say no to them, this album would have been above average. And yet people are still giving it an 8/10 as is when it's this tedious. And on the flip side, Inamorata is their longest song, and yet it actually attempts to go somewhere, unlike the rest of the album. What a novel concept...
The title track, Shadows Follow, and Inamorata are some of my favorites. This album was definitely better than I expected.

Sorry Dekay, but I have to side with Blayne on this one.
Love the double-review. Great jobs guys, really enjoyed it and i really can relay to both of you. Cheers
The biggest problem with that album is the drumming. Lars just cruises over riffs and riffs transitions like he's not listening to what's going on. He pretty much plays the same three beats over and over through the entire album. That's not nearly good enough to make an hour album listenable. It just drags and drags endlessly. 2 out of 10 for me.
I loved blonde guy’s take about taking risks. After St. Anger, LuLu, two symphonic albums, acoustic versions, Load/Reload after the 80s…you tell them to experiment more. The number of risks they’ve taken and remained at the top is crazy.

I agree - Even Hardwired did that for me; it had Black Album/Load/Re-Load vibes. I always imagine it was the lost sequel to the Black Album, and prequel to Load/Re-Load. (Btw, I'm one of the fans who does like those records - St. Anger too. St. Anger just needed better production choices.)

@pixel_glitched

@@madwolfdrawing Agreed! The Unnamed Feeling, for sure, hits me like a truck on relatability... as does St. Anger. For example - I think the biggest common complaint, Lars' snare sound, isn't actually horrible - it just shouldn't have been the complete sound for the whole album. If they had used it sparingly, like an effect, on some parts of songs - it could have been very cool. The Pre-Chorus, post-chorus and bridge sections of St. Anger (the song) really pop with that snare sound (its kind of sounds like a bell, or something). I just think that, for example, could have been better if not over-used. I understand that that doesn't really work well playing live, but in the studio - that absolutely could have been a thing.
my first listen, i too said 'its trash', I don't play guitar. But Dekay has live learned the entire album on twitch stream and he helped pick out some cool riffs that I can appreciate. It has some good riffs mixed in there.
The global premiere was super sick! I had a great time and it was a really fun experience.
The best tallica record since Black album.
The dual review was necessary lol
Blayne talks about Too Far Gone, but Atlas Rise off of Hardwired was pretty much a NWOBHM type song too. Those early influences have been showing more in both their last 2 albums.

@@pleasuretokill All i know is that i enjoy 72S the most of the last four albums. Shoot me. If i want real thrash i put on an old Slayer/Sepultura/Exodus/Coroner/Kreator/Destruction/Dark Angel/Sodom, hell, even a Testament album. Metallica has always been half-assed thrash to begin with, it's heavy/speed metal just as much-even back in their prime. Too melodic and not fast and agressive enough to ever be full-on thrashmetal. Period. Just like Megadeth.
I dig 72 a lot and because of this gave Hardwired, Death Magnetic and St. Anger a second chance. Gonna purchase all the shit.
McTallica is the McDonald's Happy Meal of metal. When we were younger it was the coolest thing, but then we grew up and realized that the most basic oversaturated garbage doesn't cut it anymore. Sure, I still enjoy a basic McDonald's cheeseburger when I need something fast and relatively harmless to fill a hunger void. James is the cheeseburger. Kirk is the cold fries that only taste good with lots of salt (wah pedal). Robert is the pack of apples that don't belong in the Happy Meal because it has too much value and nutrition (talent). Lars is the cheap toy that breaks in five minutes after taking out of the package that gets played with for five seconds and then forgotten. There's little to no nutritional value in a McDonald's Happy Meal, but chomp down on 72 Seasons because why not and Merica'!
I’ll give the album another shot but the first listen did not impress me very much

I never get what people expect from MetallicA.. We are talking about the band who covered Bob Seger and a acoustic Thin Lizzy song and have Elton John and Miley Cyrus doing covers. They are never going to release a modern experimental metal album. Especially when the band is full of 60-year-old guys. Most of the older bands still around have replaced some key members with younger guys to up the pace (Megadeth). I think Lars goes hard and plays in his lane. I was surprised to hear them do doom style songs, Burn the witch could be on a Candlemass album. I agree about the cover. The merch for this album will suck. I also don't get people with their "They have all the money they need why do they need to release a album" attitude. You should never say to a muso that they should not follow their passion to create music and I'm so sick of people whining about a band having too many songs on album. Some blatant ageism in this review. Love Dekays attitiude. Embrace MetallicA while we can before they are like Slayer and all we have a memories. Solid album and can't wait for the next one...

I'm a fan of Blayne, but I have to agree. He came off incredibly gatekeepy and elitist here... Not that he was wrong on points - he was right on several. But the whole age and money thing? That bugged me, too. Metallica can, will, and should write _what they want_ to write, and those who aren't into it don't have to be. We will enjoy what we will enjoy. Megadeth is old and is still thrash, but Dave also fires anyone who doesn't keep up, who doesn't agree, and can't keep a lineup to save his life. There are other examples in other groups too... (I like Megadeth too, but the truth is the truth) Lastly - Metallica uses that big money and sinks it into touring and the crazy shit they set up for live events. They are and have always been a live/touring band, and that's where they put their money. Their connection to fans has always been at the shows. So they use that enormous budget for _us_ when we go see them. I wish I could afford it - but anyone I've ever known to see them live has all agreed it was worth it. I'll also add that Metallica has a great track record of taking and playing songs that were below average in what we call "quality" so much better live.

I love 72 seasons very much! Have a lot of fun with it!!! And say that kill em all meets load brings it to to point! But the bridge in Inamorata remembers me to the bridge in Orion. 😉
What did Metallica already have here @5:41 ? Must have missed that one.

I don’t have a problem with track length… I love opeth. I think inamorata is a stand out. Lux aeterna is great. I’d actually give the album 3.5 skulls. It beats the last 5 for me
When a band gets to the "you can't expect it to actually be good" point it's definitely time to hang it up. I'm not surprised to hear a Canadian say this however because it explains a lot about Rush being praised long after their sell by date had come and gone.
The album is definitely based around James rhythm section and nice to see some base added to the mix. The solos do work with the great riffs. Now the drums are missing fills and tempo changes. Could almost be the same drum rhythm in every song. It is a solid record with a good mix of all thier discography. More heavy metal than thrash.

IMO, it’s not a fantastic record but it’s also not too bad. Not a fan of the production. Everything sounds too compressed. James’s guitar is missing his signature crunch. There’s no grit in his tone. And the songs overall are ok. The last song, Inamorata, is probably my favorite. It’s got cool riffs, nice harmonies and interesting lyrics.
The review was nice and you guys gave a lot of good objective comments, but the statement that old bands (35+ years) cant do great albums or bring anything new to the table is totally wrong. In an age where a lot of media are rehashing old content over and over, those old bands like Megadeth, Accept, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Voivod, Destruction, all of them released new records in which they take what made them powerful and important originally and make something new/meaningful without compromising their essence/style. Its kind of dissapointing to see Metallica dumb down on the lyrics, compared to what they used to write in the past, so its no excuse to say they cant make something powerful again.
Good comedy indeed and very honest review. I couldnt hear James's guitar and I wanted it up in the mix so its fucking in the face like James says himself.
Verdict: “it could be SO much worse”! 😂 spot on!
I love this album! Most consistent release since The Black Album, with some really great songs and riffs! Has a great attitude too! My list of favorites grow everytime I listen to it, and only Sleepwalk My Life Away really doesn't do it for me at all... It sleepwalks all the way to the end imo hahaha! The rest of the songs all have a place on the album, although I do think that some trimming in places and some more effort on Kirk's part in the solo department (he probably was doing more surfing than time composing solos like you mentioned Blayne haha) would have took it up on the pedastal from really shiny Bronze to Silver (Gold being considered timeless classic here).

Review the new overkill album Scorched
This is a good album I would give it three and half skulls. Speaking of st anger it has some gems like dirty window and sweet amber.
Here's the thing for me: Metallica is a meat and potatoes band these days...meaning they're four guys playing and they SOUND like four guys playing. They're not like Rush where there's three guys but they sound like six guys. They're more like ZZ Top of the 70s and 00s. And when you sound barebones like that, it's hard to keep my interest when songs are 6, 8, 10 minutes long. Bang out a song and make it end in four minutes. This is why ZZ Top doesn't have many long songs.
It's probably the first time in 30 years where I've listened to more than one or two songs of a Metallica album. Metallica got me into metal and I always hoped they would in some part make the music that first made me a fan. For me this was a lot better and there were some great parts of songs that remind you why they are a great band, but parts of songs don't make a good album. When you hear those great parts, you hope they are going to go in an old school direction but end up disappointing. You can use the excuse they are long into their career, but their contemporaries are still able to put out music that reflects the best of their careers, sadly Metallica are a shadow of the band they used to be.

I have to say, this is the first record since, Kill, Ride, Puppets, Justice and the Black album the i have truly enjoyed! I think its an awesome album. James vocals performance is the best i have heard in a very long time. I wish Lars could pick up the pace a little more, its very mid tempo. But overall, this album is my summer of 69 (23) album!!!

Kirk's solos always felt like they fit the song and I looked forward to them. He has some of my favorite solos ever. Now....not so much

When he decided to just wing it, rather than take the time to compose his solos, is when they stopped being memorable.
This is a record that will only be in my collection if it is a gift, if someone gives it to me, because I won't buy it even if I have extra money. From 1 to 5, I put a zero. I CAN'T TAKE JAMES' VOICE ANYMORE!
Love the new Metallica album, and I'm not comparing it with any of their previous ones. 🔥🤘

Probably because you can't (St. Anger aside)

@@fredfredericks3496 Aye I can compare but choose not to laddie. And I like Escape too 👀🤘🔥
Totally agree with Blayne. Always hate it when people say they are already old, 60 is not that old. look at bands like dream theater, tool, megadeth.. all musicians of the same age that are still killing it

Counterpoint: Tool has only made 2 albums in the past 21 years, and I wasn't blown away by either one. Maynard has lost all the aggression from his vocals & now he basically sings like the guy from Ghost. The drumming & guitar work are always interesting, but the songs aren't nearly as memorable as anything from their first 2 albums. And their albums drag on for too long, much like Metallica.
all these are bangers to me great classic music
try the 8 song formula again!
Oh wow, Metallica review & no Sam Dunn? Not that I'm complaining
"it could be so much worse" is a terrible description dekay

Great quote on the marketing campaign though.

Another symptom of the Metallica defense - it could be worse, AKA it's not St. Anger/Load/Reload/Lulu, so I can convince myself I like it more than I do.
Thank you for speaking truth ..it's lackluster...I feel bad for Robert Trujillo...
This one grew and grew for me. Love 72 seasons.
this album sounds really good and i think all these are bangers fast clean and heavy
