The inspiration of 72 Seasons came out of a book James Hetfield was reading about childhood, basically, and sorting out childhood as an adult. And 72 seasons is basically the first 18 years of your life. It delves into the crucial formative years of our lives when the die is cast to determine who we become as adults. The song highlights how childhood traumas or negative experiences shape our adult selves.

Interesting. The impact of psychological trauma on the developing brain is a mental scarring that I long ago also referred to as the blackening. In theory, this is critical to development as it plays out in reality.

Trauma is mostly good. It makes you interesting and have depth. Just have to be able to be self aware and you can use it for good like drive and ambition in your life, helping others, thinking out of the box, handling stress better than others,etc. But society wants us all to be carbon copies or in same box. It’s why i think school will all be done on computer and you will get your socialization from other places that aren’t even created yet. It’s society that screws up up when we’ve been thru or seen bad things but 100s of years ago everyone went thru that or saw it and so society wasn’t as harsh as now and that’s what made us feel worse. We need James Hetfields and we wouldn’t without Trauma. We might not have Elizebeth without trauma and her drive. You just have to accept and be self aware so you don’t use it as excuse in your life or think your trauma is the worst-you only know what you know so it’s your choice from there and you have to learn that. You’ll be fine and special if that’s what you want and one big thing is you have to see the trauma you went thru with your new older brain because people get stuck looking at bad memories as if they’re still that age. Use your older brain to view it. You can’t have good without bad. Can’t have happy without sad. Forgive yourself and the people that did it to you and it will give you incredible strength -sounds stupid but it’s where the freedom is & will set you free from the jail and the walls you built.

You have to do Inamorata from this album. It's James' best vocal performance. Period.

As someone who knows a bit about vocal technique, James has definitely improved his technique to the point that it always hits right and It doesn't sound like he's straining his voice. I have to say that earlier albums are hard for me to listen to due to how forced some of the higher notes sound. But, regardless, Metallica has always had great vocals!!! 🤘🤘

Room of Mirrors off 72 Seasons is my favourite. James emotion and lyrics are really vulnerable, and the guitar changes and new combined with old feel

I think Hetfield’s vocals on this album are absolutely fantastic, it gives the songs such a great energy. The whole album is a great addition to Metallica’s discography and I think it represents the modern Metallica very well. Love it.

This is mature people showing they still have the same character as when they were young. They just have a more "evolved" approach and understanding. It's really great to see that Metallica has got themselves to this next level. It brings a whole new perspective to rock/metal, that was born of youth. And of course Elizabeth helps us understand that. Great reaction!

What's funny is that too many of the old school fans shit on them since 91 for that exact reason. They had, and have, a lot of musical influences and didn't want to keep playing the same riffs. I think it's a good thing they tried new things, and that some failed. If they didn't try new things we wouldn't have gotten S&M or Garage, Inc. Who would have thought the biggest band on earth would or should do a cover album?

THAT INTRO WAS BADASS!! I didnt know they had a new album out. Sounds like it should be the beginning of a Bond movie.

Define "newer Metallica". Back in the days, that used to mean everything after Justice. The Black Album was released 33 years ago...

James uses his voice almost as percussion. To me that's his most distinctive ability. He always did it to some extent, but it really showed in Load (1996), which I wouldn't say is the band's best, but it's the one James Hetfield's voice really perfected this quality which punctuates the songs rhythmically.

I encourage anyone to see them live! I did for the first time (twice) in 2023 and they are wonderful live!!

In their sixties and still going strong. Already got ths album (and all the others). Some fans longing for the older Mretallica but I love it the way they are evolving. They always trying new directions. For me the whole album is great, some songs better then other but I'm pleased with it.

You have got to listen to the closing track for this album - Inamorata. It's amazing.

72 seasons album has been my favorite, it's definitely a slow grower for some fans but it hooked me right away. Shadows Follow and Screaming Suicide have been my jammers. But for reaction and analysis, Too Far Gone and Inamorata are excellent choices imo. But man, this album is worth a whole listen, I love Metallica.

Wonderful reaction. This song is the perfect example of why Metallica is my favorite band of all time! This song is 7 minutes and 29 seconds long and it never seems to drag. Your expertise points out what the listener naturally hears, but probably can’t identify, like the pauses and and such, which most people, especially me, just instinctively love. Thanks.

I remember when they played the entire album in theaters, hearing that distorted intro at the beginning of 72 Seasons was amazing. It was very unique listening to an album in a movie theater but looking around and seeing people headbanging to the new record just made me so happy 😂

Why? There are lots of bands that have been going just as long, or longer, who are playing just as hard, or harder. eg. Overkill , Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, Mercyful Fate, Discharge, GBH, The Exploited, Voivod, and Exodus.

​@@halla359 I would agree with what you said in the 80s to early 90s but Metallica's song writing has gone down hill a lot since then. I like the last 3 albums, but none of them rate higher then a 6/10. Voivod, and Kreator are releasing better albums. The problem with Metallica's song writing is that they've lost the ability to self edit themselves to the point where their albums/songs become bloated, and to lots of people, boring. If they trimmed down their song/album lengths and made things more concise then they would be much stronger. Still most bands can't touch their early output. But Iron Maiden has suffered the same fate as Metallica the last couple albums. They don't self edit anymore.

That intro is absolutely fire, dang, I was absolutely head banging along to it. Speaking of, I appreciate your detailed breakdowns of songs, but I think it would be awesome to see a video of you absolutely getting into the music and bopping/head banging along with it!

When I first heard this song, it hit me as a combination of their first 4 albums all in one. Maybe it’s just me but that’s what I heard. I’m glad Metallica is keeping on with their music I’ve been a fan of theirs since 1987 when got into music at 11 years old.

James did an interview when the album came out. Apparently he had a home studio where he went and woodshedded the vocals, figuring out what he liked before taking it back to finish up at HQ. This was a new thing for him, where he didn’t have to worry about who was waiting for him to finish. This album has some of the interesting vocal work of any of their albums, imho.

One of my Favorite songs to play on the guitar, I also seen them twice in Montreal last year. Best time of my life!

I really enjoyed this review! It was interesting to learn about the role of using space in this song.

I highly recommend listening to "Inamorata" from the same album It's just a masterpiece!!!

Cant believe its been a year since this album came out. I remember when this tune dropped, i was heavily ill with horrible ear/throat/tooth pains and this song absolutely blew my head. When the chorus kicked in i had tears running down my cheeks. Ahh so nostalgic

This album is the most expiremental James has ever done vocally, period! You can almost never go wrong picking up pretty much any track from this album, but I'd definitely be looking forward to seeing your breakdown of Inamorata (the album closer) the most!

72 Seasons as a whole is just a banger.

I love it very much how you analyze the whole song. The singing and the music, Elizabeth. Many times, it goes way over my head the way you explain it. It is thexway I comprehend music....I have the c same difficulty when I am Tango dancing to the music. As for the song lyrics and the meaning of the song..... @@riveredflush Now that you mention it that is true. At the time of writing the original comment I didn't think of that. Perhaps my biggest let down in the album is that most of the good and not so good songs have more or less the same base. I enjoy variaty and consistancy, thou the style is consistant, to me this album just lacked passion. Compared to Harwired for example. I understand that not every album can hit the mark with everybody. It is hard for me to pin point exactly what's not quite there for me. I listen to 72 from time to time. Thou not my first choice it is still a good album.

I love how you know James voice.

James is one of the world’s most wonderful lyricists. And his process is interesting… the song has to be complete before he writes the lyrics. Also agree with the recommendation of Inamorata!

I think you should give Avenged Sevenfold another chance, i know that A little piece of heaven was bit too much for you lyrically, even though it is an amazing song, but you should really check out other songs that really display how talented these guys are. Suggestions: Afterlife, bat country, nightmare, almost easy and hail to the king

I think you would like to do an analysis of Bleeding Me, especially from their S&M album in 1999 with the San Francisco Symphony. The song has a lot of vocal range, and is a lot different style of music from their earlier (and more recent) songs.

Binge watching your many analyses of music, is great fun! It is refreshing to see how you are able to find virtue in most all songs and genre. Very often, coming from a mostly serious music background - either as performers or as mere listeners - we develop a most unfair bit of snobbery towards anything musically disparate from what we happen to know or wish to discover. I grew up with this band (‘80’s) and now live up the street from Lincoln Centre and The Metropolitan Opera House which affords one the opportunity to take-in concerts on a whim - and to which I take full advantage of the geography. And tho it deeply pleases me to see a band continue to produce music that doesn’t diminish from how organically music can and should be created

I woke up from a dream last night in which Elizabeth started a band. She, of course, was the singer and all of her band was just the guys from Metallica but each were playing different instruments than what they normally play. For their first video, they did a cover of "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple. Elizabeth sounded EXACTLY like Ian Gillan but the rest of the band sounded like an elementary school orchestra recital.

Got to see the guys live last year on their 2-night shows. The pulls from 72 Seasons sounded awesome live, and they played amazingly from the opener on night 1 to the close on night 2.

That sustained single note jugga jugga. So hard to keep.

I think this song may be their most artistic. The theme of the album deals with the first 18 years of life. We find references to this in the lyrics. I think the intro and outro are expressions of before and afterlife. They're expressing the seasons of life in blocks with distinct vocal and rythmatic expression that express seasons or periods of our lives. As far as the music video. The sun is represented centrally with the band at times, spining around the sun. There is a lot of fire, but there is some blue, cool coloring, which is expressing to me up and down of life. Lastly, I think the length of the song is intentional in that it takes you for a ride and is almost tiring, almost too much. Just like life. Lastly, I want to say that about half the reason I watch these videos is just for Elizabeth's expressions. She wears the experiences on her sleeve, if you will.

You should react to Kim Dracula, their songs are amazing, there is so much going on that you wouldn’t expect and I’m really curious on how Kim does it all

If you want emotion and uniqueness, I’d recommend listening to Fixxxer from Metallica’s 40th Anniversary Concert. It tells the story of James Hetfield breaking away from the constant struggles and hardships of his upbringing and trying to heal himself. It’s a criminally underrated masterpiece and definitely one of the most unique compositions of Metallica’s catalog.

That intro is a run through of their eras. It's incredibly confident writing.
