    This was awesome to see! So many truck camper utubers aren't doing this, it is very educating as manufacturers like fudging the true numbers. When i was searching for my truck camper i was highly considering an Artic fox, I find definitely AF and sounds like lance too, they like to make their campers sound light, AF's brochure was confusing to figure out what weights included (deliberately I'm sure), watched a utuber two yrs ago then too, weigh his and say yeah heavier than they say! So doing your numbers here i get your camper is actually 4875lbs. (10800-15675). (Right?). My point is it certainly doesn't help the consumer when these truck camper manufacturers fuzzy around with the true total weight. Especially now a days, when the dam thing comes from the factory with AC etc, installed, it should be weighed on final build. NL weighs on final build thankfully. You getting the bigger truck was super smart n I bet gives u good piece of mind. 👍🍻 Edit: Wow wait your tie down's were included in your camper weight?

  • @thecumminscamper

    @thecumminscamper

    So the 10,800 also was before I installed 4 aluminum tool boxes so they add to that weight. Then add in a 3kw inverter,2 solar controllers, a dc to dc charger, tons of wiring and more but your math on the realistic weight of our camper is close to your calculations. I agree that manufacturers should weigh these campers with all the options that they offer and then also as a base model camper with no options. That way consumers can have a real expectation of what size truck they really need. The deception is to increase their sales to under informed consumers. AF campers are beautiful but definitely the heaviest brand out there for a single slide out unit (excluding double and triple slide campers on the market). Our tie downs were not included in our campers dry weight but I didn’t take them off for the scale weighing. Sorry if that was confusing.

    I just upgraded to a 5500. Have a similar setup as you except I have a northern lite (and a SRW 3500 ram. Cummins of course w/g56). Glad to see we “youngins” are embracing the truck camper life. My legs are way too muscular for skinny jeans and don’t have enough hair for a man bun so I’m banned from vanlife. I was putting out a lot of vids of truck camper life but kinda got burned out and have taken a break. Then just occasionally put out OHV stuff. Maybe someday I’ll get back at it, who knows? If ya ever find yourself up in MT, hit me up on my channel I’ll show ya around. It’s beautiful here and judging by your hat you like to fish so we can hit up some high alpine lakes and catch some trout. Probably not eat em tho. They’re not walleye. Or bass. Or sunnies 😆

    That’s rad that you upgrade to a 5500 also. Everyone’s doing it! Two buddies with f350s just made the jump to a Ram 5500. Putting out videos is definitely tiring. Especially when you don’t get many views or comments and you’re consistently putting out content. I was doing every week but now that Marisa and I are working 30-40 hours a week I’ll end up trying for a video every other week. We love Montana. We were there for part of late summer of 2021. I’d love to come back during another summer. I do like fishing, I’m not very good at it but I’m hoping to get some more practice in while we’re in Colorado this summer. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

    Great job! That was a TON of work and super informative for others out there. I’ve been wanting to do a similar video since we upgraded to a 5500 as well. We were running the same setup as we are now with a Host Mammoth, fulltime, with a RAM 3500 (14k GVWR) and grossly overweight! Last weigh I did with full 52gal. diesel and 65gal. fresh tank was 18,500. Our RAM 5500 is rated for 19,500. BTW, there’s an app for the CAT scales so you don’t even have to go inside. Awesome video!! I put the Cat Scale app on my phone. I use it all the time on my truck camper flatbed build. You can do everything from your vehicle and not have to go inside to get the receipt, they email it to you and the app keeps a history of all your weights. I think it’s a good idea to weigh your camper from time to time to stay informed when you add or remove something. There are a lot of people that never worry about having their camper overloaded which can become dangerous to others out on the road as well as themselves. Thank you for sharing this important video.

    Im curious to understand, who and why does someone determine how much your vehicle weighs? What does it matter? I literally know nothing about this.

  • @thecumminscamper

    @thecumminscamper

    2 ай бұрын

    Very fair question. Happy to explain. The value of knowing your vehicles weight is so you do not exceed the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) as determined by the manufacturer. If you exceed that GVWR and rear end someone else and that person were to sustain injury, you’d find yourself with a lawsuit on your hands. With that said I’d say 80% of truck campers on the road are over that GVWR. We upgraded to our Ram 5500 so we were no longer overweight like we were in our Ram 3500. Also if your vehicle is overweight long enough you’ll find yourself going through brakes, tires, rims and even axles much faster than you would with a bigger vehicle. Plus buying a 5500 vs a 3500 isn’t much of a price difference if any. Thank you for the question. I hope I help I answered it well

    Cool video thanks for the info. You have my dream setup. I have the same (05' 981 max) but on a srw Ram 3500. couple hundred pounds over gvwr when loaded up. Its all on the rear axel. I love the camper and my truck, do a lot of beach driving on long island so I don't want to go dually Ive seen your videos in the snow fighting with the old truck. I think I'm going to try to lighten it as much as possible, sucks to do because everything works mint but after 2 years and 2 cross country trips I've never used the generator, AC, or microwave. I like what you did with the microwave delete and moving the batteries. I heard the stock AC and Gen. are about 100lbs each. Question for you, is there anything else you found along your renovation that was surprisingly heavy or things you moved forward for weight reasons? Sounds like a sweet beach right you’ve got! I don’t blame you for not wanting a dually. Those wheels/tires act like a snowplow since they stick out past the front tires. To your question about heavy items found during the restoration, no I can’t think of anything in particular that was heavier than anticipated. The counter tops and table material we removed were incredibly light. We thankfully haven’t had to put too much thought into front/back weight placement. I’m down 10lbs in the last couple weeks! Stopped drinking except when we go out to eat once a week, stopped eating garbage snacks before bed or in the middle of the night, stopped eating so many carbs with my meals. Abs are coming back for summer time!

    You did not miss it, I should have added that into the video but I failed to do so. The rear axle has a 13,500lb rating and the front has a 7250lb rating.
