Dude, I need those heads!!! I’ve got the sc1s. That’s one bad hot rod, wish I owned it!!!
ROTTLER H85AX !!! Take the block to a machine shop that has this machine. I cant believe you guys are using a ball hone 🤯

Right....😂😂😂
MGP says allow .010 for a 6" alum. rod to lengthen when at race temp. They also say to allow around .020 for rod stretch when the piston comes to a stop at the top and to allow around .025 for piston rock.
Send the pistons to line to line coatings and let them build up the skirts.the skirts will wear into the bores.

Will last about 50 passes on 2000 + hp engines I got around 250 passes at a lower power level on the street. No load on the engine when street racing. Line 2 Line is a bandaid. Sleeve the block and buy new pistons or continue to have issues

One side of rods typically are cleared for camshaft ans sometimes bolt stick through a little only on 1 side of rod

@@bigboreracing356which coated are you getting from them?
Sand the stock thrust face down until the crank hits the roller bearing a few thousandths before it hits the stock bearing. Use some emery cloth on a flat surface.
To remove the head stud from the head, double nut the block side and then "thread" is down through the compressed aluminum at the top of the head. Some all aluminum LS blocks have had the cam bearing walk issue. They do pin those cam bearings in place. It's usually on blocks that are similar to Randy's. Dry block/heads that have had a lot of heat cycles and high spring pressure and rpms causing the shrink fit of the cam bearing to loosen slightly, usually by only .0005" or so. You could be getting the valve to piston contact due to the cam profile and spring pressure. Due to valve train mass, the lifters don't follow the closing ramp on the cam and hop over it. That can cause the valves to remain open longer and contact the piston at higher rpm, even though there's plenty of clearance on a standard valve/piston clearance check.
I was there this day to see what John does as far as recording and the making of these videos as well as working on the cars. After seeing this video wow is all I can say on the editing! Randy and John great people just hanging out and helping as little as I did what you learn simply listening to John worth every minute! Keep up the great videos minus the big problems! Just tell Randy the scramble button and 52 psi we ain’t there yet lol
The aluminum expansion rate on the CS differs from OEM castings. The GM to CS comparison isn't quite right in my experience. I use and build the CS FE blocks. Green loctite for slid fit joints will keep your bearing in place. 😬 I know its not a lot of oil but I still like to drain to the rear and front of the engine. Drilling through the support bridges is fun. The cylinders are out of round brand new in the $8k blocks I use. I have to go 0.020" to clean up for the proper finish hone.
Use that Line-to-Line coating on the pistons so you don’t have to replace them.
Idk how tight your piston to valve clearance is to start with but you know those aluminum rods grow some and with piston rock, ide say that's why your tipping the valve. Those Shelby blocks are a thing of BEAUTY, BAD ASS PIECE💯💯
Pull that pipe plug out next to that stud and I bet you that stud will come out a lot easier. Also on the thrust you want to see kinda a shared load. On engines I've messed with I clearance the bearing or shim the roller bearing so that when you push the crank forward I have roughly .002-.005 clearance no touching on the rear standard thrust. That seems to share the load well between them both I wouldn't think of removing the rear completely that would make a jump rope
A few drops of Sleeve Retainer works well on roller cam bearings.

"Our no-nonsense warranty covers everything!!" and in microprint at the end of the contract it says "at any point if the engine is run without water or has exceeded 5000 rpm, your warranty is void and no refund will be given for the unused portion of your warranty!"
Making more power than the block can hold the crank stable in the mid 80s I helped with a top fuel team and I saw that exact same thing too much block flex. The engine builder made a main bearing plate that mounted on the main caps and that stopped it.
What a monster of a motor TJohn! She still looks healthy!🤩🤩
Could you go with a little longer bushing to hold the bearing in place?
I'd take it anyway but I would check the crank with a micrometer to see if that main journal area has any runout before taking it to the machine shop just for the hell of it.... and as far as the valve kissin the valve relief i bet your on track about the piston rock causing it as much scuff the skirt has on it. From what i can see in the video anyway, It makes sense to me.... That's alot of high dollar parts there. Can't wait to see/hear that bad boy fire up
13:13 the valve contact shows me the pocket location is a solid 0.100" insufficient and way overkill in depth. I'm not sure if thinning out that piston lid is going to create localized burning/cracking, the engineer should be able to advise you. Might be worth getting a hard anodizing/heat protective coating, it's certainly worth sending the pistons so they can make the required corrections for those intake valve pockets.
I appreciate you guys..I've really picked up some amazing knowledge from you over the years
Way outside of my wheelhouse here because I've never messed with anything close to this stuff but Brand racing engines drills and set screws the cam bearings in LS motors to keep them from spinning. Just a thought.
Send the pistons to Line 2 Line in SC have them re coated
Randy ever think about upgrading to a stock bottom end LS engine? AHHAHAHAHA IM KIDDING GUYS!!!!

LS engines make killer trot line weights 🤠
I believe I would let TKM put it back together tell them how many runs you are getting he will hook you up
What about the coating steve morris puts on piston to stop the rocking
Why not get TKM to put the motor back together, plus they can also tune it for Randy and hopefully it should last longer to race then keep taking it apart every week after every event.
I been thinking about the VTP clearance issue. I wonder if the valves hit when the car spun the tires, piston rock or is the cam lobe profile so aggressive it is hopping the lifters off the cam at high rpm. It was probably just a perfect storm. Combination of all of them. When you start making that kind of power with a sbf who knows what is going to happen. It's super impressive btw.
Look at Line2Line coatings for the pistons.
Roller bearing the cam stoped all my problem 😊
Lot of big name engine builders prioritize the roller thrust over the internal . In my opinion it makes no sense to put a roller thrust in and not really use it .
That high hp draglife. I imagine you did, but did you double-check piston to valve clearance to make sure it's what it's supposed to be? Keep up the killer work. Curtis and Dan RFD are awesome. I've been dealing with Curtis for years, and Dan for a good while now too..
Id guess that the spud "spun" a little on the shaft of the cam gear when the valve touched the top of the piston? The cam gear kept turning when the cam stopped for that split second??? Just a guess.
V-P contact in this situation is absolutely insufficient radial clearance. You NEED 0.060" radial clearance, valves machining their own reliefs are destined to drop. FWIW you can dingle ball hone a cylinder for a long time an not remove more than a tenth or so of cylinder wall.
How much camshaft thrust do you have? I have a similar setup and the previous builder used the wrong Jesel zero thrust camshaft adjuster on it. Mine had .045 when it should have .003-.009
The way that valve is hitting the piston it looks like the pocket on the piston needs to move, Looks like it doesn't match the valve angle at all
Line to Line will fix your skirt issue.
Billet block coming soon
Line to line coating on the pistons if the cylinders don't have taper. That valve relief is in the wrong location. The valve should have more radial clearance. Are you sure the cam roller bearing didn't get installed at the wrong depth?
The joys of making big power..😂😂 the smallest of things bite you in the ass..
It looks like that rod was cam clearanced, and the bolt was part of that?
Big block Chevy had the same problem with the valve relief too close to the edge of the piston so in boosted applications we would actually go a little bit smaller on the intake valve so that we can have more meat in the edge of the piston As far as the camshaft bearings go the block can be modified drilled and tapped for set screws to keep the bearings in place fwiw
I’m curious what is the piston to wall currently
Wise choice not using that piston John.
The faster you go the more bit costs. Once you go onto the 4s it is significantly higher
What does the small end of the rod look like, is there wear there?
🎉🎉 John I believe that your assessment is right completely 🎉🎉
time for a new engine program
Time for Randy to sell that SBF stuff and go with a Coyote 😉

I approve this message 😂
2500 to 3000 hp probably gets a rebuild at about 35 to 45 passes no ?
You Definitely didn't have enough radial clearance on your inlet valve pocket... You know the way, your an engine builder.. pistons all in, heads on with no valves, TDC.then use a center dot pilot to mark center of valve diameter.. then you can measure your clearances... Did you give head type and valve sizes to piston supplier.. ??
Gasket ?
maybe cam bore is out of spec
Curious what makes it a sbf, when it's a chevy block, chevy rods, etc?? Lol Only reason I ask, is I see comments on other videos bashing Randy's sbf, when it's really a chevy. 😁
