ProMod Randy Boosted SBF has MAJOR issue! What do you think happened?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Well, we got more problems than we had in mind. Let's work through the process to see if we have a minor problem or a major problem. Sometimes, as you work through the tear down you start figuring out what happened and why it happened. Stopping and taking the time to pull the pan liekly saved Randy a very catastrophic engine failure. We still have some failures, but no broken rods that would have surely come at some point soon........ What do you think happened? Follow along and we will show you!

John, would be cool to see the datalogs to show the difference and what you found in the oil pressure.
Please don’t mess around with that rod bolt being difficult. I’ve trashed a block, rod piston and crank trying to keep the rod with an imperfect threading.
Can’t wait till it’s fixed……dam I looking forward to see ya at Orangeburg…….take care..
Tough luck fellas...glad y'all caught it when you did tho 👏💪💪
How Randy keeps a smile is beyond me! He’s a laid back guy but damn all I see is dollar signs and I’d be a mess lol
When it rains it pours, damnit. All part of it
Man, I hate to see that, hopefully this next refresh will solve all the issues
Keep going Randy and John
Dang man that sucks. Although, it’s a damn good thing y’all decided to do preventative maintenance!! That would have been bad if not. Myself, I can afford preventative parts but when it ruins the whole motor, that’s when it hurts the ole sphincter!! Y’all will get her going again no doubt
It's terrible to see that happen but fortunate that you caught it before a major blow up. .
Don't get discouraged Randy, it's awesome that you guys caught all of this when you did. Could have been a disaster! Keep chipping away and stay positive.... I love TJ's attitude and approach to the sport.... Life is great with friends working on their racecars ... Building memories and doing what you love. Hang in there fellas, praying for you guys...
Regular maintenance is a great thing to do especially with a 3000 horse power Ford 427 motor! Great job TJohn & Randy!🤩🤩
Piston contact will normally be valve guide wear and side loading the valve over to the piston. Just open up the piston or back cut the valve a tiny bit. and put new guides in it, probably valve guide wear. check rocker arm geometry too. I have seen it get into the cylinder walls . run a reamer thru the bolt holes to open the bolt clearance a little. Good luck.
🎉🎉❤ YES 💯 2810 hp IS A LOT OF POWER. THANK GOD THE ISSUES WERE FOUND BEFORE 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 thanks for the update
That’s crazy maintenance omg it gets to a point where it’s just not worth it anymore.
Dang that's a bummer! Randy has spent more money on that engine than I could ever dream of yet has had nothing but problems with it! Should just buy one of those new GM 632's and be done with that Ford junk!
That’s racing especially when you’re pushing the limits of the parts!!
Piston rock is causing the valves to hit. The skirts on the pistons are bending in causing more rock.
Hope you get the problem fixed soon and can get back to racing.
Thats why its made to be easy to work on, better to pull while in one piece than in many pieces
With great power " yall caught alot before it became worse..FoMo4thawin
Dont chase those threads John. A tap cuts and makes chips. Use a thread foormer aka roll tap. It forms the thread and pushes the material back where it needs to go and doesn't remove material.
My opinion, when the thrust bearing wears to where all the load is on the front roller thrust then the crank may be flexing at that journal vs the thrust containing that flex. May want to countersink the head bolt holes so it doesnt squeeze the aluminum in on the studs
The engine builder should have caught the valve Clarence issue before assembly
PMR saw TJ blow up his SB and said, "Hold my beer..." Letssss Gooooooooo!!
*I find it mind blowing that motor was making ~3000 hp with intake valves hittin'.....what the hay.?*
Tough luck fellas! You get it right again you always do! BTW was that your new mustang behind you TJ
Take it out. Sadly. Ive been waiting for you guys to get the bad boy stuck and cranked up.
Not a car guy but us bike guys will have valve reliefs on the "meat" of the crown on the pistons to get the valve reliefs
Well, gravity feed off that tank wouldn't work with no vent, and that's the catch can's job so if the line has oil sitting in it its not vented. Plumbing 101 air behind water. Adding a vent to to the tank will defeat the catch can and make a mess so looks like you'll have to straighten that hose out.
Hmmm seems to me the whole block is flexing! I just don't know how strong that aluminum block is??? Also how much did you guys allow for the aluminum rod stretch? That engine is milliseconds from total destruction! Time for a billet block. Good luck.

Head gasket thickness.
Hardest thing is your running classes that you have to be the fastest so you have to push the limit every run. It's not a 4000hp engine and only using 3000hp, your running it at max everytime
I vote “Fat n Sassy” add a little more bearing clearance to give it more cushion before contact plus added cooling of the oil etc. 👍
Ok Big John, at pump 1 needs to be the Sump, 2,3 to the pan
I run a 9.5 in Windsor based Man O War Iron block and I'm 468ci I've had almost all the problems yall are having in the past all but the roller cam bearing problem. Must be where mines iron and not aluminum, ide say heats an issue. I run a roller thrust only on my crank too. My problem is I beat the skirts up pretty bad between seasons. Don't know why but I always have the same two pistons beat up lol
You need the inserts for the head stud holes machined and pressed in, that is an annoying problem.
What up bro
Wonder if pistons hitting the valves would cause the knock sensor to go haywire too if they run one.
Sad, I would go crazy. Too few passes- too many $$$$%%.
So the converter is pushing the crank too far? Seems the converter needs more room or an issue with the converter is causing an engine issue. I think Steve Morris had this issue. He checked the converter clearance found it didn't have enough room. I don't remember how much room from the flex plate it needed. I also think I remember the converter drove itself into the Trans pump and damaged it. I think the fix was a spacer in-between the engine and bell housing.
Looks like the pin needs to be clocked a degree in the piston
Randy had about of enough he's going to go Big Block!
Speaking of Jason Tyson where is he ? Also why have a roller thrust if you’re still using the internal thrust ?
I think it needs a bigger turbo. 😮
Almost any machinist and or decent engine builder would known and fixed that off set . And if yall can't tell THE PINION ANGLE IS WAY OFF for optimum performance has too be associated with ANGLE that is constantly variable, however it has to be NEGATIVE ANGLE INTENTIONAL Initially till up ON LEVEL FOR LEVERAGE . BUT I DONT KNOW ANYTHING. DO YO THANG...
That is a ton of glitter.
Poor Randy .
Poor Courtney you never cut him a break or give him any slack. I probably wouldn't either. 😆😆😆

We have great conversations for sure... I just am recording it most times when I'm dishing it out.....lol
You guys ever file the thrust so it and the front share the load.?
only 14 passes and it spins a main bearing, something is very wrong somewhereTKM WILL DEFINITLEY FIX IT
@TurboJohnRacing
Ай бұрын
I'm thinking the thrust wore, and grabbed the bearing. Once it turned, then there was no oil getting to the bearing.
That is a bunch of issues.
CAN YOU PUT 2 BEARINGS BACK IN IT THAT HAS THE GROOVE ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM?
@TurboJohnRacing
Ай бұрын
I don't know, would not probably hurt anything to get extra oil
Main reason mustang guys use ls engines over ford motors. Friend told me years ago 302/5.0 engines are good street engines. But not very good drag car engines unless you are running 351w block or a bbf.
@royrichardson9164

This is a engine that made over 2800hp on the hub. It doesn't matter if it's a gm, ford or chrysler at that hp level it's gonna always have problems because almost every part is aftermarket
Just a thought but if the crank is/was bent could that cause contact with the valve?

Maybe, but it appears straight

@@TurboJohnRacing I’ll be looking for an update on it. I grew up drag racing in the nineties and have a little knowledge of how an engine works and I enjoy your videos. Hopefully I will get to an event and meet y’all. I even though I grew up in a Chevy family, I love Randy’s car it’s beautiful. That red almost looks like torch red, the same color we used on our cars. Oh yeah another reason my mind went to the crank was because of the thrush bearing. Thanks for the reply and I can’t wait to see your new car.
How is Jason?? Is he doing better after the wreck??

Yes, he is good. Went to the track a few weeks back with the old Hulk car with his driveline. Said it was fast

@@TurboJohnRacing right on!!!! Glad he is back racing!!!!
The question is WHY did it spin the main ?
@TurboJohnRacing

I think the thrust gave up first.... then that maybe grabbed the bearing and turned it that robbed all the oil supply

@@TurboJohnRacing I think you caught it just in time
That will beat the hell out of a thrust bearing when the valves hit the pistons. What was the thickness of the head gaskets?
@garylucier6817
Ай бұрын
Remove every valve, spin each in a lathe, you will find many of those are bent. Just my 2 cents, all those hitting pistons will be bent slightly.
@garylucier6817
Ай бұрын
John, did TKM assemble that short block? And was piston to valve clearance checked during assembly?
@garylucier6817
Ай бұрын
All the damages can be tracked back to a single issue. All that valve contact w/pistons. Now, to find out if it originates with heads, pistons, or bent crank...that is like a really tough one. Valve angles to piston valve reliefs, head gasket thickness, rod stretch, crank straightness? What a freaking nightmare to determine. Even pushrod length and spring binding. Something more than a small thing.
@lukk4273
Ай бұрын
Also wonder if maybe there was some valve float causing the valves to hit the pistons.
@supertunesupertune
Ай бұрын
@@lukk4273 That statement is true for the exhaust valves... as the piston chases the exhaust valve when closing, but the Intake valve chases the piston, so even if it does float, no chance of it hitting the valve relief .
Race car!!! Constantly....
Wow that sucks, so much money in that motor for it to just not last
@TurboJohnRacing

It does, but it's racing. The fast, fast guys put rods/pistons in 10-15 passes, new cranks 50 passes. And those are the very best of the best parts.

How long you think a 3000hp engine last?
Damn it’s broke more than it’s not
Should go big block or coyote
C only a real tuna catch something like that!
Randy get an Oberg 😐
What definitely happened was he still hasn't hired a pro tuner
@TurboJohnRacing
Ай бұрын
Because “Pro” tuners don’t blow shit up? 😂 Go sub to Steve Morris channel, or go watch some of the NPK KZread channels. Or just go to the track and walk the pits and see what’s happening on the high horsepower cars. Shit breaks all the time!!!! Tune didn’t kill this one, rod bearings good, plugs ok, piston tops not melted! Not saying I ain’t killed engines from tune up, because I have. Just like the pros!!!! Tell me what killed this one? Specifically!!!!!
piston is probably rocking and hitting the valve when the engine is cold; less cold revving, less P2W clearance, smaller intake valve, or less lift.....the lifter bushings need to thicker and have more of an interference fit....same with the cam roller bearings, or locate them with snap rings or thrust blocks......rely more on the roller thrust, that's what it is for....(I am not a machinist, just some dumbass commenter on KZread).
I hate to like videos like this but it is what it is. Late nights grow hair on your chest.

What do i think ? . . . . CHEVY TIME !
So Here is a Mouth full of Worthless Information ! When you Put it Up On the Trans Brake and the Stutter as Ignition is Interrupted on random Cyl's the Converter is Moving IN and OUT of the front Pump ever so Slightly that it is causing this to Happen ? this is only a Guess and Courtney you keep the Maverick at Home we don't need another Broke Race car take it to a Car Show / / Solution If the Front Bearing Can Keep the Thrust In Spec then Yes Cut the Sides Off the Middle Thrust bearing and Just Let Her Rip Good Luck Guy's
