Warrandyte Festival Gold Tour

Hope you enjoy some history from the Warrandyte gold fields.
One thing I should correct is his father & family have run the gold tour for 50-plus years.

I've been in most of them myself. It's a shame there locked up at the moment.

This is a small look at a few. There is so much in the area you would be shocked just how much is left.

I grew up in Croydon and as kids our dad took us to Warrandyte many a weekend. That shaft up the hill behind the creek where shack is was still operating in the early 70s, even though it's claimed the lease expired in 65. By the mid 70s the creek was overrun with dredges and more and more old cars and building rubbish was being dumped there, by the late 70s Fourth Hill looked like a tip site. I'm glad cleaning it out began in the 80s but too bad the area has become so restricted compared to how it was when I was a kid. And to those nongs who keep digging into the creek banks, bloody well pull your heads in or they'll ban the whole creek for panning.

@Kwanglebeh The thing that annoys me they keep digging the fire track out. There are much better creeks in the area. Something that surprised me today was that all the trees had been removed & it was regrowth. If I get a chance, I'll try to get some photos of what it looked like back in the day.

@@MurrayRiversGoldAdventures Yeah I saw digs in the firetracks a couple of weeks ago, you'd think they'd at least back fill to hide the evidence. The whole area from Mitcham right up through Dandenongs was denuded back in the old days, they needed timber for everything back then. I've seen the old photos, everything green on this side of Melbourne is regrowth, I've known that for decades, ever since I got into prospecting and local history. So many people think it's all ancient forest that's been here since the dawn of the time.

@billgabriel8042 More restrictions locally. Plus, gold is a lot smaller . But I find it more rewarding when you do find the odd nice bit.
