Warpaints Fanatic: My Two Bits on the New Range

Ойындар

The Army Painter and this channel actually have a pretty long history. Almost as soon as I had started out - before I even crossed 5000 subscribers - I was contacted by the team to ask, "Hey, do you want some paint?" They were one of the earliest to support the channel, and definitely the first company to do so, which I'd prefer to remind folks of and be totally up front about considering this is a review of a new product.
All the same, you've seen me use Army Painter products on the channel regularly. Primers, paints - shout-out to my favourite, Tanned Flesh! - mixes of their washes, and more besides. It's a range of products that I've happily used for years, but there's no denying some parts of the range have historically performed more consistently or simply better than others.
The Warpaints Fanatic range of newly formulated paints aims to address that, and I genuinely think it does a good job of it. The consistency issues and difficulty in mixing some of the paints are solved, and some of my old favourites from the Warpaints line have improved coverage as well. It's a solid upgrade, and I'm looking forward to adding a lot more of the new Fanatic range to my collection. Got my eye on Gunmetal in particular!
So thank you again to The Army Painter for hooking me up with a bunch of the new range to test and paint with for a while. I tried to sample a range of different colours and use cases before weighing in with my opinion, and I'm pretty happy with the end result. There are still a few colours either for matching or coverage that I prefer in other ranges - considering I have about eight different paint collections now, that's kinda expected - but the Fanatic range are going to be a reliable choice in anybody's paint rack when they hit general release.

    We're glad you're enjoying them! A note on glazing with Warpaints Fanatic, if you mix in the Stabalizer (one of our Effects paints) instead of water it will thin down the paints to insane levels whilst keeping everything intact 🙂

    I had a feeling there might be a solution there. 😂 It was really the one issue with water and paint that I was having, but as mentioned, I ordinarily wouldn't thin paint instead of Speedpaint in that way so I just had to push the boat out and be thorough!

    I was really hoping you would do a review of the upcoming Fanatic line, so thank you! I think everyone has paint property preferences, and no one company is going to produce the Platonic ideal of acrylic paint to satisfy everyone. This review did exactly what was on the tin and, like another has pointed out, you're considered a trusted source (use your power for good!)!

    AP's resin medium is one that I know a few people don't like, and that's fair - it *does* flow differently off a brush compared to most other ranges, and if that's what you're used to it can be a pain to figure out yet another consistency. For my own use, I've never really had an issue with that, and in some cases quite like it; paint that doesn't rush to fly off your brush at the touch of a model is super useful for highlighting!

    For the triad system the idea is you can take 3 paints of the 6 and have them be a triad. So you can like take paint 1,4, and 5 and it'll work as a triad.

  • @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    Huh... So taking three from the six as a base, mid-tone and highlight? Makes a kind of sense! I just wish it had a clearer name than that if that's the case. 😅

    @@SonicSledgehammerStudio they've called it a "flexible triad" system in a few videos as a way to explain why their triads have six color in it, makes it really easy for both those who only want base, mid, and highlight as well for those who really want to put in a lot of effort in their painting using all six steps :)

    It could be that it's both! 😂 But in all seriousness, there's a few of the updated range that are almost certainly going to end up fixtures. Some of the AP range are just nifty colours, but the standbys like Leather Brown and Tanned Flesh are going to do a lot of heavy lifting!

    I've had a chance to try out some of these colors (Imperial Navy, Greenskin, and Burning Ore) and I quite enjoyed them. I was tempted to order up a bunch of these colors when they do bring them out to the shelves. Particularly I was looking a few of their colors for my space marines, I'm tempted by the color DeathMetal for the main armor scheme. With some Red cloth, black and gunmetal shoulder pads. Was thinking of yellow eye lenses, and molten power weapons. (think obsidian blades with burning cracks and edge of molten steel). Still haven't quite decided on the title of this custom chapter of mine. Thanks again for the review...am still debating on these vs Two Thin Coats vs ProAcryl for my mainline paints. Gotta order them from the web, since it's the easier way for me to get ahold of the colors.

    I haven't had quite as much experience with the VGC line since I've only got a few colours, but these are definitely on par. There's still some VMC paints I'd prefer over the AP line, but that's true of a lot of different ranges - I'd stick to Retributor Armour for most things, but by comparison Plate Mail Metal just completely blew Iron Hands Steel out of the water so it's hard to directly compare. For folks that have a collection of a bunch of different ranges, it's a different kettle of fish since you're aiming for the right tool for the job, but I'd be far more confident in someone saying they needed a paint set to just point to the Fanatic range.

    There's a few that I'd thoroughly suggest as better than their Citadel counterparts, but I still like Retributor Armour instead of Greedy Gold as an example. In the most part it's about the right colour in the right place, but Ultramarine Blue and Plate Mail Metal are absolute stunners. I also regularly layer between AP and Citadel for skin tones, so I'd still recommend grabbing a couple that interest you to check them out for yourself before deciding to go all-in on replacing your collection. It's about what works for you!

    In regards to primers if you use some oil based primers some of the army painter line might crack or react especially where pooled. This is really noticeable with heavy coats of speedpaints.

    I appreciate you taking the time to make this video, even if it's probably sponsored in one way or another, but sadly it's not that useful. The new AP paints being better than the old AP paints is such a low bar to clear that confirmation that they are, in fact, better is pretty much non-info. I would be more interested in hearing how they compare to Vallejo Model Color, new Vallejo Game Color, Citadel Color, Scale 75 or other brands. That would be actual useful information that would inform the decision whether it's worth it to pick them up. Though given the fact that none of the dozens of other youtubers that received samples from AP have ventured into even a peep about cross-brand comoarison, and comprehensive paint reviewers like Stahly were yet again, just like with Speedpaints, not allowed to post their material before AP gets people's preorder money, I suspect not being allowed to make such comparisons is part of the agreement AP is forcing through with these. Blink twice if you're being held against your will :-P

  • @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    Direct comparisons across multiple paint ranges would make the video about four times as long, and these things are already nightmarish to edit as it is. The closest point of comparison I could give I did already mention, about the medium that AP uses; if you didn't like the way that the paint flowed previously, it's still essentially the same range. Otherwise it's pretty comfortably on par with Citadel's Base paints (and some of the better-covering layers, too). It's sponsored as far as I got free paint. I've deliberately held back to see how many Space Marines were gonna get painted with the stuff before weighing in, but other than my lack of success with thinning to glazes, they've gone from *You Got What You Paid For, I Guess* to *Yeah, That's Good Paint.*
