I asked JBC how many units were affected my the micro controller substitution they did not respond, They should know they are the manufacture and know how many.
I know JBC took care of me by replacing the unit, But only after a complaint.
I am really starting to doubt my decision now on the JBC switch over from Hakko. I am some what committed but Not 100% sure I want to invest anymore of my money into JBC Tools taking into account the past issues with the hot air station sensor and this issue, Not getting a straight answer on the display question.

    I haven't bought DDE, but JBC's current products have indeed shrunk in quality. I purchased the CD-2BHQF, which used to come with a transformer. However, the latest batch of JBC's CD series soldering stations now use a switching power supply instead. I emailed JBC to confirm, and they informed me that they will gradually transition to switching power supplies. The funny thing is, the manual included with my soldering station still mentions the transformer component.

    My station has the same cheap board. I took mine apart to verify. I contacted JBC, and they denied the issue. I had to send my station in for a repair. JBC said repir wait time is 6 to 8 weeks. I had to buy another station (not JBC) so I could continue my work. I am disappointed with JBC.

    Did it have missing features and not take the firmware update? If so file a complaint with your attorney generals office so there is a record. If jbc wrote an e-mail denying knowledge of the issue, submit it with your complaint.

    @Rhine_Labs Yes, my station had the same missing features, did not take the update, and had the same sub board installed. I have pictures and emails. Plus, I have to wait month(s) for service, and I had to purchase another station to continue my work. I will look for the Texas Att. General's contact info. Is there a form or, do I send an email?

    I have been in contact with JBC Headquarters In Spain 10/23 spoke with Matteo Alberti I think they are addressing the issue's "bodged capacitors and solder splatter" seen In the live teardown video.     The fact that you can buy this station today and buy it again in a year, with the same model number and have a totally different UI is just embarrassing. The bad soldering problems others have posted leans more towards what I'm getting at. They seem to have very poor quality control considering the size of the company. Both their software and hardware process control is being operated like a small time once type company. Also the fact that they removed features and tried to cover it up; at $800, wow. What a company.

    I hope people are sending these demands for the documentation and schematics to ALL manufacturers of ALL kinds of devices. I'm musician as well as electronics designer so Yamaha comes to mind :) I hope we in the EU get our shit together as well and get our legislation in order. The law in California and other States shows us the way. We need to have the schematics, parts lists, PCB pictures, firmware files and even 3D cad models of common spare parts so we can 3d print replacements for repair... Thank you very much :)

    California's #righttorepair SB244 has a truly global reach. All manufacturers will be required to comply if they sell or produce items for sale in California. Unless they choose not to sell to the world's fifth-largest economy, compliance is mandatory. Furthermore, the daily monetary penalty for willful violations is quite substantial.

    @Rhine-Labs Hey Rhine, Just got my DDU (DDE-2C), the unit doesn't go to sleep mode. The unit is running the infamous 8886448 firmware. I tried to download the latest from JBC with the hope that such issues would be patched. The unit freezes when I insert the USB stick. I tried many other USB stick, same issue. Have you found a workaround as of today ? or is there a specific firmware which works that you got directly from JBC ?

    Contact JBC they are aware of the issue's they may say they have never herd of it (that's seems to be their default) or they will ignore you but they are aware of the issue. If you have a unit with a Downgraded MCU you are probably may be out of luck. They did recently update their software download page www.jbctools.com/software.html and the DDE-C Says SEE TABLE and list of serial #'s so not sure if they are making custom firmware for units affected?

So i'm attempting to use 8886903 without any success so far...if it's hardware related, how could they miss this in production, do they actually test their product at the end of the production line...very disapointed.

    @@Rhine_Labs Hey Rhine, so I got in contact with JBC support (spain). I got a very quick and friendly support regarding my issue. They asked me to actually update my unit with 8886905 (my unit was not listed though...). I think that they update the online device list based on customer complaints. Sleep mode and hibernate are now working just fine. Note that the process for updating via the USB stick is slightly different from what's described within the "Firmware Update Manual" found next to the binaries archive on their website. You actually have to plug in the stick and then boot the unit. I used a FAT32 stick. Note that the file size for 8886905 (3 Mo) is significantly smaller than 8886903 (8 Mo)...maybe it's related to the MCU downgrade not being capable of handling big binaries, so 905 is probably made for these units. I don't really know...anyway, it seems that i got a better support experience than you or other people complaining here. Let's see how this unit performs in the future. I have 5+ years old JBC equipment at work, I love it. That's why I invested in one for my private usage. Let's see if the quality is still there.     I think I also have the downgraded station. I've also purchased separately the desolding gun and module and despite me saving the peripherals the gun will get hot and relay temperatures to the display but will not turn on the vacuum module. Module and gun confirmed working. Can anyone replicate?

    I all agree about the MCU substitute issue but different transformer argument is nonsensical. Manufacturers often use multiple sources of the part, and transformer is probably the easiest to order from multiple sources manufactured according to your spec. Especially in the past, manufacturers often require that part has a second source to even consider using the part. It's like complaining some batch has a 7400 logic IC from NXP instead of TI. Also comparing in this way with multiple sources in the cars makes no sense either. Automotive has much stricter requirements/certifications. This on other hand is just a glorified heater, albeit expensive one. Diluting argument about the real issue with some nonsensical stuff only makes your argument weaker. It took you whole 16 minutes in the video to just start showing the real difference, most of people will stop watching by that time.

    In high end stuff consistency in parts is a good thing because if you have an issue you can isolate it to a specific batch. See the live teardown it's 2.5 hours lots of rambling off subject stuff but seems I won the lottery and got some free solder splatter and a very high quality Bodged In CHANG Capacitor LOL JK.

    @@Rhine_Labs I don't see how single supply helps for tracking batches. You either track which batch of parts go to which serial number range of devices or you don't. Nothing to do with multiple suppliers. Chang capacitors are actually not that bad and it's a quite old company. They even got multiple impersonators such as Cheng, Chong, ChangX, ChongX, ChengeX and similar. ChengX becoming quite successful and rising into a major brand from a small imposter, probably larger than Chang itself. Although for this price you'd expect something more premium.

    @@Rhine_Labs I really don’t see the objection to multiple suppliers - especially in a parts shortage, having multiple suppliers is the responsible thing to do! There’s a reason the US military basically requires second-source availability for huge amounts of components and materials, as this allows not only for redundancy in the supply chain, but also for price competition amongst suppliers. Heck, this MCU issue is a perfect example of what happens when you _don’t_ have a second source!

    @@tookitogo Multiple Suppliers Okay ... but still 1 product. "We buy X from you and it has to look like ABC and do XYZ, follows standards TRE" That's what you buy for the big bucks. Of course you can use the Hyper Car approach where you build 500 pieces with a jumble of parts, make them fit, so they look good from the outside and sell it for a f* ton of money. But that leaves one each being essentially an unique product and more of: All show and no substance (Aussen hui, innen pfui) setup.

    Thanks for Posting seems like JBC still has not recalled their units with problems and missing specs/features. Whats the firmware version? If you cannot get to it via menu, When it boots it will show the firmware version.

    @@Mike1984-lc9rh I am not sure how old their stock is but if you do get one JBC will replace it but they may replace it with a refurbished unit with bodged caps solder splatter and washed out display. As they did in my situation.

    @@Rhine_Labs Thank you so much for all this information. I will contact JBC USA and ask if they can guarantee that I will get a unit with the correct chip, either through TEquipemnt or directly. If not, I'll get a cheap Aixun T3A, and I will tell them that too.They need to realize that they are losing sales and customers with those stunts. When a Chinese brand screws up a 100 dollar product, that is one thing. But when I pay top dollar for a name brand, I expect quality and honesty.

    I found out that i probably have the same problem with my JBC DDE-2C (Europe 240V version) i bought it in July 2021. My station has ALL features in the menu. I can not get the firmware update to work, it starts the update and then reboots, i have tested multiple USB sticks and redownloaded the firmware. But what yours is doing I believe what mine was doing + mine was missing features. I believe a complaint with the a few states attorney generals and other actions has been made/started recently.

    ​@@horst.zimmermann I am sure they will ignore it like they did with me and others on brand new units. Be sure to file a complaint with your local government consumer protection and if they do not resolve it search Spain and Hojas de Reclamaciones and file a formal consumer complaint.
