Warner Bros SURRENDERS NBA and SCREWS ESPN Disney? Amazon Apple Comcast Ready to JUMP | Insider Sees Major ShakeUp | Entertainment News | Stock Market News | Disney News | Sports News
Disney and Warner Bros have FAILED to reach a deal with the NBA for broadcast rights renewal and now Comcast NBC Universal along with major streamers Netflix, Amazon, Google KZread, and Apple could be in the running.
The LOSS of NBA rights could be a devastating blow to ESPN and Disney Ad Sales as well as comparable teams at Warner Bros.
Disney has lost a tremendous amount of revenue in the past 5-6 years as Cord-Cutting (in favor of streaming) has exploded and this would only make things even worse.

@@scarletspider1240 You might be right. In the 80s, the NBA was on the verge of bankruptcy. Then Magic and Larry Bird came on the scene and did for the NBA what Caitlin Clark is doing for the WNBA, at least in Indiana. Then came Jordan and the rest is history. NBA needs the next round of these types of players, IMO. I've never been much of an NBA fan but I watched Michael, the showtime Lakers, bad-boy Pistons and Bird, McHale and the Celtics. Those guys wanted to win above all else. Seems most of today's players get paid and don't care? I dunno.

That said, NBA not the only industry that this is affecting...Just look at Hollywood and films and the audiences they used to pull in the past vs. now when they have social media to market.

Seattle leadership goofed up by insisting on using Climate Pledge Arena (old Key Arena) for Hockey & NBA. It's in a poor location for Transit and Parking. Also it's a small Arena @ 16,000 seating since it's on an existing Arena footprint. $900 Million spent for Arena Upgrade = Very Expensive tickets. Too bad the City would not allow the Arena to be built by Baseball and Football stadiums for a bigger Arena and has better Parking and Light Rail Transit Station there. Sonic glory days were mid 1970's & the 1990's when Basketball was a different game. It will be interesting to see who the new fans are that are willing to pay for $100+ tickets.

Just to be clear (and please correct me if I'm wrong) --- the current 10-year NBA TV and Media rights deal between Disney/ABC/TNT (Warner Brothers) etc is a total of $2.4 Billion per year from 2015 to 2025, for a grand total of $24 Billion. But the current negotiations give NBC the TV and Media rights @ $2.5 Billion per year for 10 years ($25 Billion total) to broadcast 2 primetime games per week; Along with Amazon having the TV rights and Media at $2.5 Billion per year; And ESPN retains its NBA TV and Media rights (but to a significantly lesser extent) but at $2.6 Billion per year over 10 years --- ALL for a grand total of approx $7.6 Billion per year (or $76 Billion total over 10 years)? Is that correct?

Would the techies and Comcast be overpaying for the NBA? Yes, of course. But that's not the point. The point is sometimes you have to take a small hit - and believe me, to these tech companies, it's a small hit - in order to deal a devastating blow to your competition. It's as much about having the rights as it is NOT allowing Disney to have the rights. And that's a shrewd move.

NHL has small numbers, but the viewers have higher average net worth than any other major sport. Thus, they can sell high-dollar brands like no other league. And it’s not even close. 19% of the general population makes over $100,000 a year. 33% of NHL viewers make over $100,000 a yr. And a lot of those viewers are younger/families. PGA has a fair amount of high-earners too, but the average age is way higher, and that demo isn’t as attractive to advertisers. Hockey fans typically are hockey fans because someone in the home played hockey. And it is EXPENSIVE to have your kids play hockey. Equipment costs, ice time, camps, league fees and road games…it’s crazy.

That’s why sports rights are exploding and as more people watch everything on streaming live sports is gonna get MORE valuable - not less. Cause as sports fans it’s a communal experience - we all watch it together. So people aren’t streaming games later to avoid adds. I sometimes watch a moment or 2 behind - but in big games when I watch with others or engage with others online - if I am behind them that is impossible.

Lifelong NBA fan, they’ve created a product that’s not even watchable. We grow up learning defense differently than the NBA allows it to be played. Everyone knows the ratings have been dropping like a boulder for 4 years, and it will keep happening under Adam Silver because the players don’t respect him. He asked the All-Stars this year to make it a game and play defense because nobody watches it anymore, they players stuck it to him by scoring over 200. The league has never been more unwatchable, maybe I’ll try again after LeBron is out of the league even though the creation of Clutch Sports was the beginning of the end.

If youre going to bid for sports rights, hsve some understanding of the environment in which you're buying. E.g woke content making customers switch to sports and an understanding of how sports rights actually work.

Nobody watches the WNBA. The NBA still has decent viewership numbers. (Then again, I don’t watch the NBA [since I find it boring]. The last time I watched was the final game of the Isaiah Thomas/Bill Laimbeer era Detroit Pistons first championship.)

Actually it's watched a lot by Americans and worldwide. It's second only to NFL and Superbowl. But worldwide NBA is huge second only to European ⚽ league.

You don’t sound too bright when you talk anything sports. Do you fallow tv sports ratings. All sports ratings are down . Masters Sunday couldn’t draw 10 mil.

If Amazon retains the rights to air nba games, I’ll bet viewership goes up. EVERYONE has Amazon prime….less and less people have cable which for a long time has been the only way to watch the NBA.

They should invest all their money into the WNBA. There's as much of an audience there as there is for any current "modernized" show they release
