WARHAMMER Painting Paralysis! Anyone else relate?!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

With the introduction of the Warhammer 40k 10th Edition and the release of the 40k Leviathan Boxed set I thought I'd talk about painting paralysis.
And no, I didn't buy the Leviathan Box. But did have a little bit of fun in photoshop! Probably about time I got my personality across a little more. :P
You must know that general feeling you get, once in a while, with certain Games Workshop or other models when you really love them and want to do a great job. But that passion can sometimes kill the momentum you have, when the fear is real that you'll make a mess of the shiny new miniatures that you REALLY want to look good!
Anyone else get this? Or is it really just me?

    You are definitely not the only one! I'm a massive fan of kit-bashing and creating unique models, but then once I've made them and are happy with them, I'm then terrified to paint them because I can't just buy new ones if i mess it up! I've got conversion that I made 10 years ago that I've still yet to paint. It's driving me insane!

    Something that helped me get over this was taking a bunch of janky, broken space marines with horrible paint jobs from when I was a kid. I cobbled the pieces back together and cleaned any mould lines, etc. then just primed over them without stripping the paint. They turned out great -- any loss of detail was almost imperceptible and you'd never guess there are at least two paint jobs hidden underneath. It was a nice reminder of how forgiving acrylic paints are, and how much time we waste being pedantic over things that don't matter.

    When i was a teen i used to think like this of my heroes. I painted basic saurus after basic saurus, and my Slaan is still bare metal to this day. As an adult i fully embraced the “it’s just paint” style: i can’t improve if i don’t try new things with the risk of messing up. I still want to do my best with my favourite models, but that’s no way i’m “saving” the best ones, waiting for my skill to improve. If it’s ugly, i can still strip it. There’s no sense in spending a lot of money on a model and not having fun with it for the fear of doing something wrong. I now choose the model purely seconding my wishes and picking a model compatible with the time i want to spend on the project.

    Definitely done this.. a LOT. All my life. I spent a lot of effort trying to convince myself that things don't have to be perfect and I'll never get better if I don't just get in and do it.. but the big thing that really solved it for me was kinda simple. Expensive, but simple. I just bought 2. Maybe not the big army boxes, but if it was a fancy terminator box like Grey Knight Paladins.. or an Armiger.. I just bought 2 boxes. One was my test model that I'd build according to the instructions, then prime and zenithal with a good solvent primer and base coat, so even if I stripped them that base zenithal likely won't come off, then maybe even a lacquer varnish for good measure.. then just painted it like whatever. Sometimes randomly.. different color scheme for each limb. So built to spec, colored however. The second one was the opposite. Now that I knew how they go together, and even have some spare bits and a model I'm fine cutting up, I'd always tweak and modify the second one to make it personal and unique, then use the experiences in painting the first to make a nice paint scheme for the second. So far it's worked well; when I can get motivated to paint at all. At least I don't feel like 'that model's too fancy' anymore.

  • @thestateofplay2023

    @thestateofplay2023

    9 ай бұрын

    Yeah, I totally het where you’re coming from. But don’t you think all models are ‘fancy’ now? So many fine details, pouches, packs, belts and now loads of them expect you to freehand all these patterns on them too. I miss the 80s. A lump of pewter barely even sculpted with blob for a head and a gun sticking out. Simple! You couldn’t make a mess because they were already a mess! 🤣🤣

Then it was for competition, you got points in most LFGS tournie and leagues for a well painted army. Now I don't play at clubs. I don't enter competitions and I don't participate in leagues. I made lots of beautiful kitbashes a long time ago, but I never got to paint them because I was afraid I wasn't talented enough yet to honor them, and then I dropped the hobby. When I resumed, I had the same feeling, until I told myself "screw it", don't buy more before this is painted. I trained on Imperium collection to refresh my skills, and got to painting my old works. And I'm satisfied with the result, it surely could be better, but you can't postpone forever There's pleasure in seeing progress, even if it's slow. It's just you. You're the only one. Feel the inadequacy. Feel the shame! Really though, I don't suffer much from paint paralysis. More a case of painting interest retention disorder. Every time I start a model, I'm already thinking of the next project and planning how to do it. Takes a lot of mental discipline to get projects done.

    Are you my long lost twin? 🤣 I am terrible for this. I have 25 year old minis from when I was a kid where I didn't want to paint them for fear of wrecking them. I certainly don't want to paint them now that they are old and rare! I get around it these days by either buying more than I need (like you) or painting something from a different army that interests me less while I get into the zone for the "good" models. All a bit mad!

    What helped me get a grip on my terrian kits was breaking them out to learn how to use an airbrush. I didn't want to learn how to use an airbrush on my models due to my "painting paralysis", so out came the gray terrain pieces, paints, and airbrush. The terrain pieces were the perfect practice pieces because they didn't require the level of detail that models did and could be painted in more of a grimdark color scheme. Wouldn't you know it, eventually I got better at airbrushing and started priming my models with the airbrush. Then, I was able to airbrush the bases and then the first layer on models. Gradually, I got better at airbrushing models and discovered that it can be much faster to paint them with an airbrush, especially the rank and file troops. Now my biggest problem is finding space to display and store my completed terrain and miniatures! I've also become addicted to buying more paint sets, having most recent purchased the Army Painter SpeedPaint 2.0 set and figuring out where to put 90 more bottles of paint while I decide to use them with a standard brush or to use an airbrush!

    I think everybody does this. In the classes I (occasionally) teach, I often hear something like, "I'm waiting to paint that until I'm good enough." What follows is an exhortation. If you don't have the energy for one of those, please pass this by and read the comments from one of the other fine commenters here. You have been warned. 8-) Life is too short to paint minis you don't _love_. Paint it now and if you screw it up, they'll make more. It's so much easier to sit down to spend time with beautiful (for some value of "beautiful" that includes undead or Cthulhan horrors or whatever) miniatures than to sit down to "practice minis". By the time you do "get good enough" you probably won't want to paint those first minis anymore anyway. Do it now! And save the minis you do now to remind yourself that you really have gotten better. It often doesn't feel that way.

I left painting for a while, dealing with a different universe, in my case flames of war. I'll see if I can come up with something clever after refreshing the receptors.
