IRL many ancient nordic countries had a "speaker of the law" that would just orally tell people the law and the hope was that people would speak up if the "Speaker of the Law" changed the law too much. People did crazy things to save on expensive paper costs in antiquity. This is also why most ancient written languages don't have blank spaces between words!

"People did crazy things to save on expensive paper costs in antiquity. " Parchment was extremely costly but people also got rather creative with the material to write one. Birch bark for example became apparently quite popular in regions where they grew. Even letters by commoners were found written on that material (somewhat dispelling the notion of the illiterate medieval commoner).

  • @zigzag1630

@@DeHerg You're describing the same impetus from a different angle. When you're writing on birch bark, or bone if you wanted something more permanent but also fairly cheap, you're less writing than you're carving and you're carving onto a relatively small area because of the fragility of the bark and the very large letters that you need to use. So you want to use less space and, in the case of Futhark, very angular letters that are easy to carve. Modern language use more rounded letters because it's easier to write a rounded letter with a pen.

In Iceland around 900-ish there was a "speaker of the law" that would travel to norway every 3 years to read the book of law (can't remember the name of the book) to keep it fresh in his memory. Totally legit, it was a tradition until 1240 when Iceland came under Norwegian crown

If there isnt a hero in the lore that was wrongly accused sentenced to death by a day in the bear cave, only to emerge a day later, riding on the bears, going on the bring justice to the real criminal and going on to be an army general of Kislev I will be rather disappointed.

*pained groan* Ugh...Arch...I can see what Dev meant when he said you were butchering foreign languages' pronounciations in the last Wermacht By Night. :D The "Gospodar" is pronounced "go-spo-dar", with hard 'A' at the end, not "go-spo-dor" with a hard 'O'. I expect this to be remedied come the video you said you will be making on them! :D (Fun fact for the non slavic people around, that word means Master. So the Kislevites are literally descendant from the Master race. The Slavs.) On a side note, any thoughts/comments on Loremaster Of Sotek kind of indirectly calling you out in his video talking about the Ice Guard release for the Old World? And is there any chance for the two of you to have a discussion/debate about it and general Warhammer stuff overall?

Well yes and no. The root word meant something like 'Lord' or 'master', yes. And, to my knowledge, it retains it in Eastern Slavic languages, but in Western Slavic ones it's evolved into something more akin to 'host' or 'patriarch'. And it's not a recent evolution either - in XVth century Polish it already meant 'patriarch' where now it is used as the root for anything to do with the running of the household or the economy (as an extension of the praxis of running the household, Aristotle-style). This becomes a really convoluted mess once you realize that Kislev is essentially a mix of Poland-Lithuania and Russia - two VERY different political cultures (at the time at least). Either way, there reallycisn't much fluff on Kislev over all and my point is meant to be more real life than anything really... G(/H)ospodar is not *necessairly* 'master' is my whole autistic point.

Though, tk be fair, Kislev does seem more Russian than PLC. The only real thing PLC about it is the (not) hussars...

@@CatWithAHat2HD Initially I did not understood what this foreign gibberish "go-spo-dor" meant, but when you started explaining, I made the connection. It is Lithuanian word "gaspadorius". It is quite an old Lithuanian word and it is not as popular anymore as it was in previous generations and since. It means head of a household, usually in referring to a family. It also attaches certain expectations of age and wealth. You would not call someone young who had just married and had their first child. It is word reserved for men, not boys or rather when individual matures completely. Also, he is expected to have his own wealth like a house and means of supporting itself. Only then this word could be rightfully used to describe a man. It is a honorary word which you would call someone if you want to acknowledge his status and importance within his household. Little bit formal, but used in everyday conversations. As for pronouncing this word, it is "gas-pa-do-rius" with an emphasis on "r".
