Wardens - Episode 2: Operation Antler Blitz | Outdoor Documentary
Watch 'Wardens - Episode 3' here: • Wardens | Episode 3: O...
In this episode:
Montana Game Wardens look into illegally taken antlers. Plus, follow along as they help with conservation efforts for sage grouse and walleye.
When your job is protecting our most precious natural resources in some of the nation’s most remote areas, there is rarely a dull moment. Wardens chronicles the lives of Conservation Officers in America. The show features the men and women who protect public lands, from ride-alongs on interstate game checks, to anti-poaching sting operations; from remote snowmobile trails in grizzly bear country, to unforgiving white-water rapids. While the focus of Wardens is enforcement of regulations, the show takes special precautions to ensure the general public understand those who would violate the rules are the minority and the vast majority of encounters with our Wardens are law-abiding citizens.

Thing is, usually with Game Wardens it's a cut and dry type situation. You either have a license or you don't. You either have a boat cushion or not. Sober or drunk. Trespassing or not. You either did it or not. That's been my experience with them. Since it's usually a ticket, not imprisonment, most just fess up and move on. I do get your point about keeping silent if arrested or if they read you your rights. At that point, let your Lawyer do the talking. Peace.

It’s a give & take thing. Here in Canada, if your rights are read to you, you are facing much more than a ticket. If you are getting a ticket, there’s no need to read you your rights. Generally. I did law enforcement for 30 years and the job of Fish and game was my dream job, but I never pursued it as I also liked what I was already doing so much it wasn’t a big difference! Her we are to say anything you say “may” be us3d as evidence. (“Can”, or “can & will” were phased out. TV makes the job challenging sometimes as everyone thinks they know the law becauthey watched a few episodes of Law & Order,,, 😂😂😂. There’s a difference in how laws are applied and how suspects are handles, and there are exact pairings as well. It’s just one country vs another. I think in the USA the Warden’s job is the best law enforcement job out there if you are a serious outdoors type of person.

The amount of people who don’t understand that picking up antlers is only a crime during the time the areas are closed is crazy. It’s not so much about the antlers as it is the activity of people picking up the antlers disturbs the elk and lowers their rate of winter survival. I’m not even a Montana hunter or resident and know that….

  • @chevyon37s

@@justinsnow5621 like I said in my original comment it’s only a crime because the act of people looking for and picking up the antlers is what is disturbing the elk during a time when the elk can and do die when human activity spooks them off late winter/early spring food sources. And they also explained that on private property the owner or permissive users are free to pickup antlers at any time.

It's a "crime" because it's an opportunity for government plunder. There is zero effect to elk winter survival and picking up sheds even to sell is a harmless activity. No government should be allowed to regulate and then steal from citizens doing this.

  • @joeyphillips1181

    @joeyphillips1181

If that disturbs and lowers there chance at survival so much why are the game wardens riding around on horses when nobody else is there disturbing them themselves? Because someone picks an antler up doesn't mean they are chasing elk around they might not even be anywhere near the elk.. just sounds like a waste of time to me.. if people aren't supposed to be there then go after trespassers.. but to serve search warrants where someone could die over picking up an antler during a certain month is dumb in my opinion and the reasons they give aren't that good because the wardens are doing the same things lol

Let’s get something strait right now ! The money used to re-establish the wolf was stolen from the Pitman/Robertson act , which is a tax on sporting/ Hunting guns & equipment etc brought about at the wishes of hunters ; this money was to be used for game habitat restoration , you got it HABITAT RESTORATION . (You don’t believe me ,do some honest research). NOT the introduction of a superior species of the wolf to replace a lesser sub species . The wolves they now have in the northwest are from northern British Columbia & never existed in the northwest , in other words they themselves are a invasive species , as far as the northwest is concerned & to every other place they migrate!

Point #2 the wolves were introduced to deplete the wild game populations, so that it would not pay the common man to even hunt them , forcing us to buy ALL our food & then when there is no food to buy as in Veuizwella you die . What a way to decrease the world population , as Gates said we must do , but it is not happening fast enough, so we had to have - Covid round one & they are currently working on round #2

Here in Montana game wardens certainly strike a fear in many law abiding hunters and anglers. That said, the game situation in Montana and New Zealand are very different. I do believe that has a lot to do with the amount of or lack of predators as well as the high concentration of non-native species that are in New Zealand. Conservation of native species is highly regarded. Which explains why Montana needs to be more strict and New Zealand can be more open with their laws and seasons.

I think it’s about making sure the group of elk have enough grass to eat with out competing with cattle for the resources. The free range cattle and hunting pressure would be to much for them to substance them selves, if they were not protected on those blocks that were set aside for them to be safe . As soon as they cross the boundary lines they become targeted and the food sources available are only likely 25% as available as the set aside areas.

They’re only worried about the act of picking up the antler because it’s the reason people go to the closed areas and end up disturbing the elk. They’re not really worried so much about people pickup up antlers as they are the human pressure/ disturbance at a critical time of year for the elk. Picking up antlers is just what they can easily punish people for as a result, as well as the added fine of trespass since they’re going into a closed area to get those antlers.

It isn't a matter of removing sheds from public lands, it's a matter of trespassing on the game range when it is closed. If you will notice, there is a shot of a sign stating the game range is closed during certain times. These times are coincide with the winter and spring since that is when wildlife is most vulnerable.

@@user-jn4go1de9s$$ and you better not get caught killing trophy during season. It will be scrutinized heavily if they see you because the fines go way up if a bull elk score over 320 inches. It incentivizes them to harass the hunter and even make them return to the exact spot where the animal was killed. Problems arise it many ways. I’ve hunted elk where we tracked a wounded bull over 5 miles and found the next day. One of the main issues with this is at impact of the shot there’s many times not much blood. A small rain shower could easily wash away any sign or blood of the shot site. It’s your word against what they “feel” like happened.
