One of the facts that impressed me more was the deep knowledge President Zelenskyy has about global politics specially western one. He understands the position of every leader of their own countries and what would they face if they go further to help Ukraine, and at the same time he does not blame them. Very intelligent man and at the same time so "emotional" having empathy with what is happening to his people and troops. My most deepest respect to him. A true leader and an example for more than one to look at.

@@teatimetel174 With all my respect to you, I don´t necessarily agree with you; A person with than kind of determination and sight of global "realpolitik", besides the fact that almost 3/4 of his population backs him up, can´t be easily manipulated like a marionette. I´m not saying that´s absolutely impossible, but hardly doable. However, if you are wright, most of the rest western leaders are puppets as well. Greetings from NE Patagonia, Argentina.

@@kgb2hell First of all, I like your "nickname". I totally agree with you. If Merkel and Trump would have being ruling along with B. Johnson, Putin would NEVER began this insanity. In my very modest opinion, this event will be considered in 50/60 years time as a "before/after" historical turn. What´s coming out of this once finished, who knows, but this might be a serious insight on what are we doing with our western societies; what kind of leaders are we choosing... César Millán (yes, the "Dog Whisper) once said in an interview and I quote: "...humans are the only species of the animal Kingdom who elect week leaders..." and i absolutely agree with that concept. As a combat veteran I am struck hard by the way President Zelensky talks about his soldiers, it's hard to sum up as other than "he gets it, he absolutely gets it". This wasn't the kind of talk that was meant to be all "Rah Rah get the soldiers pumped up" since it wasn't directed at them but bright soldiers who happened to hear this interview would come away knowing he's the real deal - if they had any doubts beforehand

Very perceptive point. I don't have a military background but to me, it's loyalty and integrity - the keeping of promises. He promised that he would stay, he would not abandon the people. And he meant it. And he still means it. And he tells them the truth. There''s a very moving video on his Instagram page, from early on in the war, visiting wounded soldiers in hospital, handing out medals and taking selfies with them. It was clear they have huge respect for him.

What Zelensky says at the beginning of the interview, about telling the truth, not what pleases people most, can clearly be seen in the interview he gave the Russian journalists some days ago. For example: when they asked him if he was sad with Russian government, but not the people, he could just have confirmed that, but instead he directly said he was very disappointed with Russians in general, even if his mind was telling him just to blame the government, his emotions were louder.

Agreed. His previous life is very helpful. It's an easy target but to do political satire that well requires acute observation, and courage, because it involves making fun of people who don't tend to like being made fun of. It also means he can think very quickly on his feet. He's run a very successful business. There's a lot of skill in managing complex situations and in picking the right people for the right roles and in empowering them to do what needs doing. We talk about "the theatre of war". That isn't accidental. Theatre only looks easy from the audience's perspective because there's so much going on behind the scenes to make it look easy. He understands all the mechanics, all the interlocking parts, needed to make things work.

@@Muddy283 Depends what nations of NATO. USA and Canada are self sufficient and wealthy nations, and they designed the sanctions in a way to sustain the least damage. So is Russia. As for Europe - well, they need to understand that they are poor, resource-deficient, dependent upon pretty much everyone in everything part of the world. Economic standoff (or any standoff for that reason) with someone like Russia simply isn't for the EU. Russia will forget that there are sanctions within a year, as it happened in 2014. EU however will have to get comfortable with living with +12 degrees in winter, face more deaths every year during winter months, get accustomed to scheduled rolling blackouts, food shortages and rationing. Basically, poverty is to become the new reality. Even Blinken said it today - "the era of post-cold-war prosperity for the West is over". The only way for Europe to avoid such scenario is to smarten up and realize that they need to support positive relations with everyone, and not engage into adventures a-la Ukraine, namely supporting armed coups, covering up war crimes, calling a plutocratic dictatorship a democracy, engage into sanctions games, etc. That will take stepping out of its comfort zone to regain sovereignty.

Note that when English subtitles are missing, it is possible to get almost decent subtitles by enabling automatic machine translation of the Russian subtitles. And when Russian subtitles are missing, a last resort is to enable automatic Russian speech-to-text and then apply automatic translation. The results are often unintelligible, but mostly better than nothing.

Thank you. An excellent interview with a man who, I think is already changing the way people see their politicians. He connects effortlessly at two levels - as a world leader with an exceptional grasp of what is effectively 3D moving chess, and also as a Ukrainian citizen who empathises deeply with ordinary people struggling to survive and defend their country. Because he never forgets he's both, simultaneously. A lesson many in politics could learn. Those leaders are now being forced to reconnect with the people they represent. The point he made about just being yourself, and not trying to prove you're honest, is fascinating, because it comes down to authenticity. He dismisses being brave, but the presentations he's doing to Parliaments around the world are training videos in fearless leadership and advocacy. It's a desperate sadness that his country is suffering so appallingly, with such grievous loss of life and infrastructure. But it, and he, are emerging as beacons of courage and heroism on the world stage, and showing us all that true humanity transcends language barriers and geographical distance. Ukraine chose well in 2019.
