I had a Ukrainian Landlord while living in Boston, Mass. USA. He lived in Poland during WW II under the Germans. He evaded the Russians at the end of the War. Made it to West Germany and eventually to the USA. He had nothing good to say about the USSR & Communism. He always said, they take everything and destroy whatever they touch. This was told to be during the late 70's to early 90's while I was their tenant. They were wonderful people to know. Thanks.

When you understand that 90% of the people left it is easy to assume that among the 10% of those who stayed is a percentage of pro-Russian sympathizers, but if you count the original 100% you will end up with some 6%. Mostly the young ones have either left or are in the fighting areas. The older generation who grew up in the USSR do not really see a difference between Ukriane and Russia. Just think some have a pension of round $80 per month .. at this rate what can be worse. For the young ones, being Ukrainian means belonging to a democracy, having VIsa Free travel to the EU, and so many other rights which the Russian occupants will take away from them.

This destruction is from Ukraine reclaiming the city. Russia had occupied it for months with little resistance so there was no need for them to shell a city they were holding. Ukraine was shelling and blasting the place with HIMAR's non stop to take the city backfrom Russia, this is how war works. The defending force fortifies a town and try to squash any attacks by firing long range artillery at incoming forces approaching the town. The attackers shell the town/city from range to try and take out the other sides bases and fortifications before sending ground troops in. So what you are seeing here is the destruction caused by Ukraines attacks seeing as they have just chased the russian forces out of here. This should be obvious to anyone who understands even a video game level of how war works lol. So when everyone is celebrating the west delivering more HIMAR's systems to Ukraine realise that this is the outcome. We should have been pushing for peace talks earnestly back in march not getting Zelensky to pull out of talks on the promise of infinite weapons to lay waste to towns with.

Thank you for this excellent report. The most important point I got out of this is that Russia will use any and all means to extend its influence outside its borders - expatriate ethnic Russian populations exported there decades earlier, Russian language promulgated through the reach of mass media and even an ethnocentric religion promulgated through an official state church operating franchises abroad or in neighbouring countries. Nothing is off limits.

I visited this paradise church before, so much memory. It is sad that it become in its damaged state. I hope the war ends soon and ukrainians repair this sacred place!

I hope they all can agree that the referendum and all according decisions need to be Ukrainian, not Russian. Even if the outcome is the same as now. Edit: that hotel owner broke my heart. His country, his life and lifework all cracked. I hope not broken. I hope he will rebuild somehow.

HOnest reports that not everyone supports Ukraine there. On the other hand many por ukraininas have fled and most pro RUssians stayed or didnt really care and were fine about the situation as it was before the war

My wider family is deeply divided over the war, too: 12 of us support Ukraine, 1 of us is a Putin cheerleader. And there is no hope whatsoever of bridging this divide.

Ukraine needs to forever stop speaking Russian and kicked out anyone whose loyalty is with Russia. If they want to solidify their ties with the West, teaching English as the second language instead of Russian should be the new norm in Ukraine.

Heartfelt for Ukraine peoples have to bear the destruction of war. I hope Putin done his desire to destroy almost entirely beautiful country that take years to rebuild or some part may not return back like before. Stay strong Ukraine as soon war over the international community will step in to help rebuild.

If the war is escalated further by Mr Poo Tin using his nuke then I don't think VN can stay neutral any longer. Russia and China will force us (already happened in politic) to pick their side, which means sending our people to be Poo TIn conscript and cannon folder for his thirst of conquest (unless the Russians stand up and make a revolution themself else dictatorship will never fade away in their country)

Those locals who wants Russia can always go and live in Russia ... respect the sovereignty of nations.

From those who stayed you have a fraction that were too old or too attached hence they stayed despite what was happening. And the other fraction which stayed because it agreed with what was happening. That is expected. But then you have to remember that 90% of the population fled.

Note how one of the residents said some 80% probably are pro-Russian in the town. The spends most time on people willing to talk, i.e. those on the side of Ukraine. But you can see both sides, and how polarized the town is.

Obviously the war criminals will have fled but the true test of how good or bad a regime is , is count how many people go one way or the other. Take the Berlin Wall for example lots of people died trying to cross from East to West but I think nobody ever tried the other way… why? Because life in East Berlin thanks to the Russians was simply awful. How many young Russian men are fleeing conscription right now? & how many French, British, Americans etc etc are fleeing & trying to get into Russia? I will tell you in round figures: 0 … because its bloody awful there and its run by a complete C U Next Tuesday.

I naively wish for a rapid Ukrainian victory by the end of this week, so that I can visit these sites and be one of their new tourists, while my government helps finance the reconstruction of this poor, devastated country.
