Fanfiction that's actually loyal to the lore and spirit of the setting? Preposterous!!! I absolutely loved this game, I believe it was made by the same studio that made the old EverQuest PS2 games.

This game is an extremely underrated idea. There are so many events that take place in Middle-Earth during and hundreds of years before the War of the Ring, its baffling that studios think they need to invent characters or make Isildur into a ringwraith to have an interesting game. Im eternally waiting for a LOTR game during the War of Angmar or the Dragon Wars in the Grey Mountains.

Or a real War in the North game that follows the events of the actual War in the North during the War of the Ring. The Dwarves of Erebor and the Men of Dale were fighting the Easterlings. If I recall, there were also some minor skirmishes/battles that took place in Mirkwood as well. There's also the three times the orcs and goblins of the Misty Mountains tried to assault Lothlorien.

The Shadow series is not lore friendly, I'll give you that, but they are solid games, which is more than can be said for War in the North. Talion is a non-cannon power fantasy; purists were never going to be a target demographic. Look at Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for another example. Purists called the game dumb because the protagonist can outmatch Darth Vader.

@@danielflanard8274 IMHO the only thing that really has to be in a game / story to make it work in Tolkien's world is the theming. If the themes are similar -- or the same -- liberties can be excused. IMO the Shadow series is brilliant. It starts as a power fantasy, but it ends perfectly for Tolkien's theming. The problem with many of the recent "Tolkien" entertainments is the themes have been changed... and without those themes, Tolkien is not Tolkien.

The zombie things are basically the Barrow-wigts so it's always nice to see those, they are rarely used in games, well maybe in a few like the Fellowship of the Ring game and maybe LOTRO but Barrow-wights are in general a fascinating element and so needs more use in games...hell those Shadow of Mordor games could have used more of this, the Barrow-wights and lesser wraiths the victims of Morgul-knife would have been great enemies especially in the Unseen the wraith-world almost mini bosses even. "When he came to himself again, for a moment he could recall nothing except a sense of dread. Then suddenly he knew that he was imprisoned, caught hopelessly; he was in a barrow. A Barrow-wight had taken him, and he was probably already under the dreadful spells of the Barrow-wights about which whispered tales spoke. He dared not move, but lay as he found himself: flat on his back upon a cold stone with his hands on his breast.... As he lay there, thinking and getting a hold of himself, he noticed all at once that the darkness was slowly giving way: a pale greenish light was growing round him. It did not at first show him what kind of a place he was in, for the light seemed to be coming out of himself, and from the floor beside him, and had not yet reached the roof or wall. He turned, and there in the cold glow he saw lying beside him Sam, Pippin, and Merry. They were on their backs, and their faces looked deathly pale; and they were clad in white. About them lay many treasures, of gold maybe, though in that light they looked cold and unlovely. On their heads were circlets, gold chains were about their waists, and on their fingers were many rings. Swords lay by their sides, and shields were at their feet. But across their three necks lay one long naked sword. Suddenly a song began: a cold murmur, rising and falling. The voice seemed far away and immeasurably dreary, sometimes high in the air and thin, sometimes like a low moan from the ground. Out of the formless stream of sad but horrible sounds, strings of words would now and again shape themselves: grim, hard, cold words, heartless and miserable. The night was railing against the morning of which it was bereaved, and the cold was cursing the warmth for which it hungered. Frodo was chilled to the marrow. After a while the song became clearer, and with dread in his heart he perceived that it had changed into an incantation: Cold be hand and heart and bone, and cold be sleep under stone: never more to wake on stony bed, never, till the Sun fails and the Moon is dead. In the black wind the stars shall die, and still on gold here let them lie, till the dark lord lifts his hand over dead sea and withered land."

But more seriously, this game is still more lore friendly than the Shadow of Mordor/War games...and it's surprising but there's way more book references and lore used in this game,...hell even an NPC's like Rowle Appledore in Bree one can talk to and do a quest for in Bree in War in the North game is actually a book character: "I will indeed,' said Gandalf. 'How many?' 'Three and two,' said Butterbur, referring to the big folk and the little. 'There was poor Mat Heathertoes, and Rowlie Appledore, and little Tom Pickthorn from over the Hill; and Willie Banks from up-away, and one of the Underhills from Staddle: all good fellows, and they're missed. " :) Shadow of Mordor/War could have been far better if they were done more canon compliant, more lore friendly...one can also be puzzled why they haven't used the book elements such as Silent Watchers: "He [Sam] drew Sting and ran towards the open gate [of the Tower of Cirith Ungol]. But just as he was about to pass under its great arch he felt a shock: as if he had run into some web like Shelob's, only invisible. He could see no obstacle, but something too strong for his will to overcome barred the way. He looked about, and then within the shadow of the gate he saw the Two Watchers. They were like great figures seated upon thrones. Each had three joined bodies, and three heads facing outward, and inward, and across the gateway. The heads had vulture-faces, and on their great knees were laid clawlike hands. They seemed to be carved out of huge blocks of stone, immovable, and yet they were aware: some dreadful spirit of evil vigilance abode in them. They knew an enemy. Visible or invisible none could pass unheeded. They would forbid his entry, or his escape. Hardening his will Sam thrust forward once again, and halted with a jerk, staggering as if from a blow upon his breast and head. Then greatly daring, because he could think of nothing else to do, answering a sudden thought that came to him, he drew slowly out the phial of Galadriel and held it up. Its white light quickened swiftly, and the shadows under the dark arch fled. The monstrous Watchers sat there cold and still, revealed in all their hideous shape. For a moment Sam caught a glitter in the black stones of their eyes, the very malice of which made him quail; but slowly he felt their will waver and crumble into fear. He sprang past them; but even as he did so, thrusting the phial back into his bosom, he was aware, as plainly as if a bar of steel had snapped to behind him, that their vigilance was renewed. And from those evil heads there came a high shrill cry that echoed in the towering walls before him. Far up above, like an answering signal, a harsh bell clanged a single stroke. 'That's done it!' said Sam. 'Now I've rung the front-door bell! Well, come on somebody!' he cried. 'Tell Captain Shagrat that the great Elf-warrior has called, with his elf-sword too!'" The Return of the King, LoTR Book 6, Ch 1, The Tower of Cirith Ungol Ideal for the fortress protection devices :) or the Barrow-wights, or lesser wraiths victims of Morgul-knife as an actual enemies in game, as powerful counterparts for Talion who after all is closer to a 'living' Barrow-wight than anything else :).

Fun bug from development that I'm not sure ever got fixed: Start NG+, then start dumping points into the Dwarf's explosive crossbow bolt ability. You'll start doing damage in scientific notation because it runs out of numbers. You can kill the final boss in like 3 hits with it. Render the other two characters completely meaningless. It was labeled "No plan to fix" because they didn't expect anyone to actually play NG+. Even the developers knew it was shit.

Yep.....this one Barrow-wight adventure: "'Where are you?' [Frodo] cried..., both angry and afraid. 'Here!' said a voice, deep and cold, that seemed to come out of the ground. 'I am waiting for you!' 'No!' said Frodo; but he did not run away. His knees gave, and he fell on the ground. Nothing happened, and there was no sound. Trembling he looked up, in time to see a tall dark figure like a shadow against the stars. It leaned over him. He thought there were two eyes, very cold though lit with a pale light that seemed to come from some remote distance. Then a grip stronger and colder than iron seized him. The icy touch froze his bones, and he remembered no more. When he came to himself again, for a moment he could recall nothing except a sense of dread. In the black wind the stars shall die, and still on gold here let them lie, till the dark lord lifts his hand over dead sea and withered land. He heard behind his head a creaking and scraping sound. Raising himself on one arm he looked, and saw now in the pale light that they were in a kind of passage which behind them turned a corner. Round the corner a long arm was groping, walking on its fingers towards Sam, who was lying nearest, and towards the hilt of the sword that lay upon him. At first Frodo felt as if he had indeed been turned into stone by the incantation.... Suddenly resolve hardened in him, and he seized a short sword that lay beside him, and kneeling he stooped low over the bodies of his companions. With what strength he had he hewed at the crawling arm near the wrist, and the hand broke off; but at the same moment the sword splintered up to the hilt. There was a shriek and the light vanished. In the dark there was a snarling noise." The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 1, Ch 8, Fog on the Barrow-downs So....yeah, Frodo WAS hacking with his sword at a Barrow-wight ;).
