Hamas only have one goal, as many civilians dead as possible. So far the amount of deaths isnt even close to the 39 000 actual civilians killed the first 3 weeks of operation freedom just in baghdad. Where they also tried to minimize the amount of civilian deaths, in a much larger area, where the enemy didnt put civilians in harms way.

@@ethanguptill3417 i didnt say it was a good thing. look at the ratios in the iraqi conflict, the saudi/yemen conflicts, the lebanese conflicts, the conflict in veitnam, hell the conflict between ireland and great britain. the sad reality is that when an insurgent force uses civilians as cover while launching attacks against a conventional military, especially when the civilians are supportive of and participating tacitly or actively in the causes of the insurgency, you are going to have HIGH civilian casualities. the line between civilian and combatant gets blurred heavily and is itself used as a convenient propaganda tool for an insurgent force. for example, they will use women and children to transport and bring combatants munitions and material support. in that moment by definition those "civilians" are acting as members of the insurgency. this is something that is forbidden to do within conventional militaries, but encouraged in these groups for the very reason that if those women and children are killed as a result of involving themselves in the war making, the insurgencies can use their death as propaganda to rally support globally and among the populace. they engage in shitty tactics endangering the very population that supports them so they can play the victim. they hide munitions and command in hospitals and schools. they fire weapons from the courtyards of mosques and churches. they locate their command structure in historical sights. so that every time their military structure is attacked, and the civilians they put in danger are killed, they win a point in a propaganda war. they hope to throw enough "innocent" bodies on the alter of their cause that their enemies eventually can't stomach any more killing. it is the most dispicable form of warfare and has been a go to for certain regions in modern times. THAT is the reality of modern urban warfare, and THAT is what causes high civilian casualties.

It is normal to classify information by region. Did you not know that? Also, it is wrong from what I can tell. It is actually a very good ratio. Both the US and Russia had worse ratios for Iraq and Afghanistan respectively. Israel is actually doing better than average.

Edit: sorry guys got the numbers mixed around. My apologies 13k soldiers to 19k civilians, 13:19, that's less than half. Half (1:2, 1 soldier for every 2 civilians) would be 13k soldiers killed, 26 THOUSAND civilians. That's 7k less. To maximise the speed of this war, to make it end faster, Israel would need to stop trying to be careful and start being reckless. That ratio would go above 1:2 and the war would end faster, hostages would likely be captured and reclaimed easier. However, as part of being reckless, it's likely that the IDF would end up accidentally killing hostages. They already have done and it is indeed tragic

Just to put you into prespective - in Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the wordt stats speak about 300.000 dead, wounded, captured, MIA combatants (100.000 Soviets and 200.000 Afghan forces) with around 200.000 killed The civilian casualities are between 1.5 - 2 millions dead and 3 millions of wounded. Meaning that for each soldier dead 10 civilians died and for each missing, captured or wounded soldier 30 civilians were wounded. This gives us total ratio of 1:16.7 millitary to civilian casuality. Gaza is 1:1.46 - and this by using the Hamas source that is most likely overexadurated. (With most probable number being 30.000 deaths the ratio would be 1:1.3)

They also count anyone under the age of 20 as "children," but males are 14 and up are allowed to participate in Hamas. If you look at numbers for ONLY 14 and under, less than 7% of casualties are children. In urban warfare that's a ridiculously low.

By that logic it's *always* a war crime to attack any terror organization because they're not technically state militias. Israel, however, does distinguish between uniformed military personnel, because, despite what some would like to believe, Israel has an officially recognized state militia rather than a terror organization. Therefore the *civilians* who were purposely targeted for r*pe, b-heading, evisceration, sanguination, and old-fashioned gunshot deaths were civilian homicides.
