Andrei BOLKONSKY is an anagram of the surname Volkonsky. Ancient family of nobles, known since the 13th century; they have roots from the Chernigov branch of the descendants of viking Rurik, the founder of the ancient Russian state in the 9th century. Volkonskoye Principality existed in the 13-15 century; in 1470 became part of the Duchy of Moscow and All Russian State. So James Norton played a guy of ancient almost 1000-years known line

An anagram is two (or multiple) different words that are spelled using exactly the same letters. Bolkonsky is not an anagram of Volkonsky. Tolstoy used the name Bolkonsky because he wanted to use a name that sounded familiar to the Russian people without using an actual historical name.

You are spreading lies! Because Rurik is not a Viking. The word Viking in Scandinavian languages literally means a robber, a sea robber. But, the prince Rurik and his squad are not robbers. Russian chronicle writes that Rurik has nothing to do with the Scandinavian peoples, moreover, in the Russian chronicle it is written that the Ilmen Slovenes, to whom came Rurik and his squad, all spoke the same language.

@@rodjarrow6575 In fairness, no one knows the origin of Rurik. There is no written evidence. And Russia, as a country, grew up on the captured trade route, as a transit state.

This actor is far too young to play Andrei....he looks like he’s 20. Andrei’s father objects to Natasha bc she isn’t their equal, but _also bc she is far too young for Andrei._ It’s in the book for people who disagree. People want to have a heartthrob Prince to dream about, but the casting of Andrei in the Russian version is nearly as perfect as it could be. He is handsome, he is older, you can see how weary of the world he is. This is just “War and Peace For Twenty-somethings Who Haven’t Read the Novel”!!!

I must respectfully disagree, he definitely appears "older" than her, he appears sophisticated, he has lines on his face, around his eyes. He does not look 20 years old to me, not at all. She, on the other hand, appears to be quite young, 17 yrs. old. Yes, people want to have a heartthrob Prince to dream about..... not some older man with with a far too young woman....

You're mistaken. Andrei is 31 in 1809. Given the meat of the story starts in 1805 and ends in 1812, the actor (31 in 2016) you are criticizing for being too young was in fact the perfect age to play the role. On the contrary the Russian actors playing Pierre and Andrei in the otherwise excellent Soviet adaptation were way too old for their roles. Way too old. EDIT: especially Bondarchuk.
