About me:
I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 1 million views in just a month. I also work as a video editor, cutting ads for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

    This was absolutely incredible. I’m planning on transitioning out of the military and I’ve always had a love for film making. Your explanation is an incredible blend of information with a sprinkle of comedy which makes it less intimidating as i currently think it would be to get started. Thanks and I’m looking forward to all of your future videos! If you ever need some free help hmu 😂

For the longest, I’ve been wanting to shoot a short that I wrote a couple of years ago, but I’ve been putting it off for dumb reasons. 😅 This definitely makes me want to get up off my ass and do it. Thanks for sharing your experiences and resources. Cheers! 🙌🏾

    Very interesting stuff, I don't see myself as a movie creator, just a YT video making guy (apparently I'm one of few that think so lol); but tbh I watched a handful of your videos here but I guess this one was the last straw, you know the one, and I am compelled to subscribe. Your persona, with that glib, 'you know I'm right, and if you don't know that, just trust me it's good advice' confidence. So I tossed in my Artlist sign-up too, I'll take the mutual 2 month bonus. For a couple of weeks I've been waffling about Artlist or staying with Epidemic - something quirky happened there though, but that's another story ;-) thanks for the great teaching vids

    Thanks for the great tips. Everyone I know is making short films - mostly just to keep busy and have some fun. So much effort goes into the films and then they post it on SM or Show it at shorts night @ coffee houses, maybe enter it into a few festivals, and of course - if it turns out good, everyone uses it on their reels. What is your motivation for making shorts?

    Thanks! My motivation for a short varies case by case. For Will "The Machine", I wanted to prove I could handle a larger/more professional production, network and learn on its film festival run, and potentially get some interest in the feature version of it. For Last Laugh Inc. it was mainly for fun, but I also wrote a comedy feature recently, so I wanted to test/develop my comedy skills.

    hey, new to discovering you. if you have a video that can point me in the right direction, please let me know but I am curious. for a short film idea, can you take a pivotal scene (around 5 minutes) and shoot that and if it does good use it to raise money for a feature or should you completely move on to a new project/story. I have 3 short film ideas that are essentially a piece of a bigger puzzle. I have no experience, no camera, but trying to make connections with groups on FB with no luck so far...so I guess on top of that, how do I make connections with other filmmakers with no experience?

    Out of the $1850 how much did you spend on your crew? Did they work for free? I'm starting out have my own film equipment and basic lights, but I've been told beginners need budgets of up to 10K to pay for crew and actors because they can cost several $100s per day. And your other videos talk about acceptable rates for the types of jobs push near $1000. How'd you manage a professional crew with that budget amount?

    Is there a particular way (camera settings) you should film footage for it to be colour gradable? I see the footage was quite washed out.

  • @JosephMartin

    @JosephMartin

    2 жыл бұрын

    As for camera settings, shooting in log or RAW gives the most flexibility when it comes to color. Quite a bit of film color comes down to everything OUTSIDE the camera though. Set design, lighting, and wardrobe have bigger roles to play in the way a film looks than camera settings or color correction.

    would you or anyone be able to tell me more about the curtains on the windows at 9:14? I get the point, I'm asking for a little more detail here. what is the name of it, what does "specifically" do. and when would you want to use them vice nd filters or other options, etc. thanks in advanced.

  • @StandardStoryCo

    @StandardStoryCo

    Жыл бұрын

    Those were just practical window curtains I bought from Amazon to darken the windows so they wouldn't be too blown out in the background. You could apply ND gels over the windows to do the same thing if curtains weren't going to make sense for the location, basically the same thing as a window tint on a car. Or you could use a bunch of lights inside to brighten up the interior and get it closer to the brightness outside, then lower the exposure in the camera to make the windows not appear so bright. I didn't have much in the way of lighting, so the curtains were by far the easiest/cheapest option.

    I have one big critic: The set design was non existent. You could have used clown photos and paintings on the walls, and they would have also helped with the audio (less echo). But I assume the landlord wouldn't allow you to...you could have used Blue Tack and simple paper posters.
