Go listen to the searing drum intro at the beginning of Van Halen's classic, "Hot for Teacher," from their hit 1984 record and rejoice that it was a paper route that decided the musical fate of the brothers' Van Halen. Born in Amsterdam on May 8, 1953, to Jan van Halen, an accomplished jazz saxophonist and clarinetist, his wife, Eugenia, Alex, his brother Eddie, and their parents moved to Pasadena, California, in 1962. Though the brothers were trained as classical pianists, Alex first gravitated towards the guitar, while Eddie first picked up sticks on a $125 Japanese-made St. George Kit, with Eddie delivering papers to pay for the kit. When Eddie was away slinging papers instead of licks, Alex stepped behind the kit, honing the craft that helped launch Van Halen into the pantheon of rock gods. When Eddie heard Alex's mastery of the drum solo on "Wipeout," Eddie turned his attention-thankfully-to the guitar. He thus set the earliest lineup of one of the most influential music acts in rock history, with Alex's drumming drawing inspiration from the likes of Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Buddy Rich, and Ray Phillips, which all formed to create a wholly unique and singular sound.
The "Brown Sound" created by the band is often attributed to Eddie, but Alex insists the name is after his distinct snare drum sound, though Eddie’s virtuoso guitar playing is a sound unto its own. The band has sold over 56 million albums in the United States and more than 80 million worldwide and earned entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
The offered custom Ludwig drum set with pedals, hardware, and Paiste cymbals used during Van Halen's 2012 tour in support of their album A Different Kind of Truth is presented. Alex, who uses and endorses Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals, used this kit during the 60 shows on the tour. The tour kicked off with three warm-up shows at Café Wha? In New York City, Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood, and The Forum in Inglewood before the tour kicked off in Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center on Feb. 18, 2012, ending on June 26 in New Orleans. The Asia portion of the tour was canceled due to Eddie Van Halen's emergency surgery for diverticulitis and rescheduled for 2013. The tour grossed $49.9 million with over 485,000 attendants.
The complete custom drum kit was designed and constructed for Alex by John JD Douglas, Alex's longtime drum technician and liaison for over 20 years, and was played during the 2012 tour by one of rock's most influential drummers. The tour-used drum kit comes with an LOA from Douglas, who states that the kit, constructed by Douglas, was sold by Alex to David Frangioni/Frangioni Foundation through him, attesting to its authenticity.

What is not to like? The man was a monster. He was also the Leader of the Band. Alex was the guy. Eddie was always a waste, and Dave was so badass it was the perfect friction. It was great, it had an end, all great ones do. I was a big fan of old skool VH and also a huge fan of solo Hagar... I actually got on stage with Sammy when I was 17 years old and he threw me into the crowd. Love that era. When Sammy joined VH, I felt like two of my favs just perished. Yup. But Sammy survives and does great music with many projects.

Lot of haters on here. If this kit were set up, tuned, and mic’d up for a Drumeo video, it’d sound a lot better. His kit is unnecessarily extravagant for his style of playing, but that was par for most rock drummers in the 70s, 80s, and 90s - until Grunge became popular. AVH isn’t the most technical drummer, but much like Ringo and Lars, he’s great because of his feel. He has an identifiable sound despite never overplaying. His parts were always perfect for the songs.

It’s really a 6 piece kit . 2 rack toms , 2 floor , double bass , and a snare . That’s the main kit . Timbales and octabons are secondary percussion items.

I appreciate the rock and roll looks but those drums are the worst sounding drums I have ever heard!

If they were mic'd up, i think it would be a different sound. We are listening to some camera mic.

Ludwig is one of the kings of a vintage sound, which works with playing old Van Halen songs, but IMO there's no kit period that can beat DW in sound quality overall.Theyve got the deepest sounding kits available, but every rockstar drummer is gonna be loyal to a certain brand just like Lars is with Tama,etc,etc...

i wanna see the drumkit poison used. it always makes me laugh at some of the poser glam bands of the day, these massive kits with doubled basses and racked cymabls and five hundred tomtoms... yet they play the basic 4/4 rock beat.... compared to a real drummer with a hihat, snare, and kick...

That was a really poor hot for teacher lol. I can't help but tell the truth. I've heard 12-year-old drummers on KZread play it a zillion times better
