Probably my favorite example of narcissistic rage in fiction. Walts ego was wounded so he invented a reason to lash out, and when it's done he seems ashamed of himself because he rationally realizes how petty, pointless, and cruel he was. For once Walt can't justify it as defending himself or protecting his family and he feels small because he can't escape the fact he just killed a man for hurting his feelings.

i mean... even if it wasnt for his ego, walt had figured that mike had to go. he knew he was always going to stand between those inmates. and even tho he could make his move with lydia, he couldnt afford the risk of mike's return for revenge. because that would be half measure.

I love how while Mike is literally dying a slow painful death he doesn’t show any signs of being in severe pain or any fear of death he just calmly accepts his fate and just dies peacefully

What makes it even sadder is that Walt figured out how to get the names. So Mike died knowing his family would never get any of his money, and all of the 9 guys that he trusted on that list would die, and their families would never be supported. He died in pain, knowing that his plans would never come to fruition, and he was next to the one person he dispised more than anyone.

Mike's death is easily one of, if not the most unjust deaths in the series. Not only could his death been totally prevented had Walter swallowed his pride, but his attempt to give to his granddaughter the money ultimately failed in this same episode. If you remember, he entrusted his lawyer Dan to put money in Kaylee's deposit box, only for it all to be seized when Gomez caught him in act at the bank's vault. On top of it all, he couldn't even give his daughter a proper goodbye because he had to promptly flee. He lost everything

It may be unfair but it is the life that mike chose, he could have had the justification that he did everything for his granddaughter but that is not an excuse, he was a criminal and in the criminal world you can die at any time and it will not exactly be a Heroic death, whoever you do it for, a good criminal will remain a criminal

@@rukifellth3866 Walt was one of the most evil characters in bb and like Mike there is no justification for the things he did but his way of playing his cards (apart from being the protagonist) was what gave him his advantage and his "happy" ending. Walt died alone and without his family but he died happy knowing that he would never set foot in jail, that he triumphed as a teacher and that after a lifetime he was able to do something of value even if it compromised innocent lives. After all, all criminals end up dead or imprisoned and there it does not matter if the ending was more or less happy, everyone has what they deserve, whether it is fair or not.

If there’s one thing Better Call Saul did, it made it more evident just how much of an absolutely chaotic force Walt really was. All of these characters survived cartels, psychopaths, criminal masterminds and in the end all of their lives get uprooted and destroyed by a chemistry teacher with an ego problem.

Walt was a genius whose ego ruined his life and chance at success. Grey Matter and the drug trade both were never enough for him because he wanted to be the #1 man. He was an egoistical maniac, yes, but he was extremely smart. Yes, he lucked out with some things but often it was his genius that got him to where he wanted.

If that show teaches us anything it’s that these characters were always bad. Walt just became apart of that world, but it’s not like Gus and Mike were any different. Mike killed people as much as Walt did and was working in the same business. Gus killed people too and his revenge was his motivation. Sure Walt did things and bad things at but I wouldn’t consider anybody in this show to be a saint sure they had limits but they all had blood on their hands.

What's so shocking about this scene was that it was completely unplanned and totally needless. Walt had a reason for every single person he killed, whether it was to cover his tracks or it was to further his plans as a drug lord, and each time he killed someone it was premeditated and planned. With Mike, Walt killed him out of nowhere because he dug at Walt for what he truly was; a prideful, arrogant manipulator, and his ego getting hurt caused him to lash out like this.

Even in the moment when he shot Mike and had the audacity to tell him "I'm sorry".. It's a testament to how far Walter's mind has really gone from the beginning of the first episode.

I got chills when Walt said “Mike it’s time to go to Belize”. Truly a reflection of how twisted his psyche became by this point. Incredible acting as always.

I liked the part where Mike said, "I knew I should never have trusted you, Waltuh. I had a feeling you were going to break everything bad. And I did nothing to stop you when I coulda. I guess that was on me."

Mike is usually good at predicting anything around confrontation. The fact that even he didn’t expect Walter to do this is extremely sad.

Walter gets under his skin. He holds a mirror up to the reality that this business changes people and Walter does NOT hold it well I think we forget that the transition into Frankenstein's monster is a slow fade. Truth is that Mike still holds out that he's not completely gone.Mike has been living this life for a long time and for the most part, has had the jump on whoever was on the docket The last time he had that on Walt was in that Laundromat, but that old Heisenberg magic snuck past. He can't just kill Walt on "some prophylactic measure" as much as he despises him. It would confirm that Walt got the better of him if he lost his cool. That would cinch his humanity It's telling, that brief moment of apprehension _YOU_ caused him to overlook what Walt may have been scheming and it cost him

@@rover5058 yeah, maybe Walt was more educated than him. He was extremely talented with chemistry. But as a whole, he wasn’t smarter than Mike. He screwed everything up, causing everyone around him to die or go into hiding. He consistently made the wrong decisions and doubled up on mistakes, something both Mike and Gus warned him about. He did it all for his family yet he tore his family apart in the process. Walt was not ruthless. He was an idiot who pretended like he was smarter than everyone else.

That *_”yooouuuu”_* at 1:49 was delivered so amazingly. So much built-up disgust and hatred rolled into one word.

"If you had done your job, known your place, we'd all be fine right now." It's kind of crazy how this line reflects Mike's character, on the surface it is simple, he sticks by the rules because he understands there are unforeseen consequences to breaking them, they can be devastating, if he didn't waver from this his son would still be alive and things would be better, is how he sees it I love how Better Call Saul compliments this series

He was wrong though, because what set everything in motion was Walt saving Jesse and Gus deciding he needs to punish him for it. They could've still worked together after that if Gus wasn't obviously planning and trying to kill him.

You have to wonder what Mikes thinking in his last moments. Fring is dead. His money for his family got taken, he will disappear without a trace. He took a half measure and got killed by the guy he was worried about the whole show. Brutal ending for an amazing character.

For me the saddest part is Walt following Mike and trying to apologise. Even in Mike’s last moments peacefully contemplating the end and looking over the beautiful view, Walt ruins the moment thinking about his own ego. Mike’s response is perfect.

What hits the most for me is how after Mike is shot he instantly goes into survival mode, he’s so stealthy even wounded that Walt doesn’t notice him leave the car. Knowing how skilled Mike is I’m 99% sure he could’ve killed Walt if he wanted to but he made the personal decision that he was done and would rather go out peacefully.

I love how Mike is portraited as the ultimate professional: no mistakes, no emotions, all his actions calculated from cleaning up Jane's house to escaping the police manhunt on him. At 1:13 to 2:00 In light of the gaming world's on-going situation and this is Helldivers vs Sony right now. I wanna you guys picture this, Mike's representing the Helldivers 2 Community and Walter representing the Sony company.

“… you and your pride and your ego…” is the line that echos in my head when thinking about this scene. Jonathan’s performance is incredible and just telling Walt point-blank what’s wrong with him and why everything keeps going to hell around him. He said it in the most direct way possible with no hesitation or fear. Just anger and aggravation.

Imagine going through hundreds of solo confrontations with the criminal underworld. It might be easy to forget that any one of them could kill you at a moment’s notice if that’s just your daily life

"we had a good thing you son of a bitch, we had Fring, who threatened to kill you and your family, how dare you kill him in self defense!"

People here defending Mike forget that Mike was about to end Walter in the lab without hesitating for a minute, it's only because of Gale being offed that they kept him alive. Everything would be fine with Gus alive, yes, but for Mike, not for Walter. Walter would eventualy end up dead 100% so Mike's speech here is totally subjective.

What I love about this scene is how cold and heartless Walter is portrayed here, and how Cranston makes it seem accidental, almost "innocent". Mike died protecting his men, but by telling him he can just get the names from Lydia, Mike knows he died for nothing.

I can't get on board with Mike as any kind of hero or protecting anyone beyond his own self interests, much like Walt. But I agee with you on one point and in my opinion it's the the most distrubing part of the scene for me. Walt speaks about realizing he can just get the names from Lydia as nonchantlantly as if he'd just missed a turned on his way to run an errand- while a man bleeds to death next to him because of his actions. oopsie. At least he apologized, I guess. One of the many corners Walt turned on his way to becoming the villian.

From just a substitute actor for a scene to easily one of the best and likeable character from BB and BCS

I got immediate chills down my spine when Mike greeted Walter, it comes to show how much attention to detail was poured into these episodes. Bravo Vince

“I just realized that Lydia has the names. I can get them from her.” Hearing that for the first time made me so angry I could barely even focus on the rest of the scene

As interesting as that sounds, it does not look like that's what happened here. It really does look like Walt got caught up in a rush of emotions, and only after the regret had set in did he realize how all this could have been avoided.

Sure, he doesn’t mean to add to the pain. He’s trying to apologize for making Mike’s death basically meaningless and also unintentionally saying Mike’s holding out on the information was futile. Everything about Mike’s death was senseless. Great writing

Even though at this point Walter is past the point of no return, I don't think Mike is right. Gus's plan all along was to get Walter to work with Gale until Gale can copy everything and then get rid of Walter. I think Walter acted rationally for half the series. It's hard to tell exactly where was that point of no return ( probably letting Jane die, although even that is questionable since there's a good chance Jane and Jesse would soon completely lose their lives while abusing H but idk ). Say what you will about Walter, he became a monster at this point but Mike is not right about "them" having a good thing going, Mike had a good thing going, not Walter.

Gus only wanted to kill Walt after he killed the 2 guys, but even after that, Walter started being paranoid and reckless throughout all of season 4 which is why Gus fired him. Walter did have a good thing after Gale died and no one was there to replace him.

It blows my mind that this scene literally exists and there’s people who don’t realize Walt has always been the real villain. 5 seasons of utter brilliance in storytelling and it goes right over peoples’ heads.

everyone understands his transformation. It is what the show is about. Before attending to the intellectual capabilities of others, one ought to prioritize introspection of their own.

Mike saw right through Walt right to end. Walt’s face when Mike addresses his ego and pride is amazing, shows how inflated Walt’s ego was.

I love how Mike accepts his death in a way that Walter never could. He doesn't want a big final finish to his life, he's ready to just sit down and enjoy his final moments.

@@omarmassaoudi2932 the finale was Walter dying for something other than himself, but he still refused to die in peace and instead went for a grand finale to save Jessie. It was the right thing to do, but it could've been him being upset that someone else was getting credit for his legacy or him just wanting to get revenge on the neo nazis. Either way, he didn't die peacefully

@@Wastelander1337 he dies equally peacefully as Mike, both were fatally shot, both walked elsewhere from the scene before passing, contemplating quietly before death. It's not some big parallel between the two characters or anything, but Walter absolutely passes in a similar fashion.

@@hwtte5438 The one dying in the lab is Heisenberg. Walter totally "dies" under his house. When Skyler tells him she gave the money (they could use to flee after Gus threatened Walter´s whole family) to Ted Beneke. After that moment there is no more Walter White and Heisenberg takes full control. Even the call from Marie telling the cartel wants to kill Hank while Heisenberg´s laughter is heard in the background is an invitation to it. That everyone is entering HIS world now. And the death of "both" sides of the same person happens in similar shots. Camera going up slowly while they´re laying on the floor. One in his home. His comfort zone. The other in a lab. His comfort zone.

I love the fact that this isn't a calculated k!ll like Walter's other victims and most likely out of rage. Its brillian because i think the first half of S5 shows how much both characters want control and power over things which resulted in an imbalance and tension. It of course strikes Walt's ego to the point where he decided to kill Mike to regain his ego and grasp of control

"Whoopsie daisy. Sorry Mike. Didn't mean to kill you."

"This whole thing could have been avoided" is such a telling line. Notice how Walt uses the passive instead of active voice (i.e. "I could have prevented this.") to avoid placing himself as the subject of his statement, therefore not having to claim responsibility for a mistake he committed. That, on top of bringing up Lydia and her possession of the names he wanted BEFORE telling Mike that he's sorry, makes his apology all the more disingenous and furthers his impenetrable pride and utter lack of humility.

I love how the music changes when Walter starts walking back to Mike’s car. You already know whats about to happen.

Seeing the backstory of everyone in BCS helps to hammer home the fact that the right chemistry teacher in the right place at the right time can erase years of hard effort and planning

@@billross9132 _Almost_ indirectly. He did kill Ocho Loco and (by proxy) Hector. However, Los Mellizos, Bolsa, and the rest of the Eladio Cartel were all Gus. Edit: Tuco is the odd man out in this hitlist. He really set his own death in motion through virtually no machinations of either Walt or Gus.

Putting Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul together is when you realize that both stories are about how meeting Walter White is the *worst thing* that happened to every person in the series who met him. (Give or take.)

1:25 I always laugh pretty damn hard when he says: “And now suddenly this is all my fault?!?”

This scene is even more impactful knowing mikes Backstory and the money he was getting for his family that we meet in BCS. Great story telling here and it shows

Better Call Saul is the sad parade of all the people whose lives would be screwed by Walt

What's even more disturbing is knowing after Mike died, Walter had to drag is corpse back up, stuff him in the trunk, hope to not get pulled over by police, and in the next episode, with todd, dissolved him in acid, with 0 remorse for what he'd done.
