​@@ElectricCoolin 83 he was 30. Only in 77 did he have iver 2000 total yards. 83 84 85 he had over 2000. At 33 he had 1333 rushing yards. Last year he was splitting carries with Neal Anderson and still has over 750 total yards. He was never in decline. He wasn't even signed by another team. Broncos and Miami were in need of a running game then. Could have played another 3 years in a passing offense with great results.

Greatest back ever, releantless!!

The greatest player to ever step on the gridiron. There's still never been anyone like Walter. He ran with absolute brutality. And then on the next play had the sweetest moves. Best blocking HB all-time. He sawed defenders in half with his blocks. Walter was the Bears top receiver early in his career. He legitimately could play QB. Threw 8 TDs in his career including a 60 yard bomb. Led league in kickoff return average rookie season. Punted once for 39 yards. Kicked FGs in college. Never ran out of bounds. Always delivered the hit. Played 13 seasons. Only missed one game, his rookie season. He wasn't injured, the coach held him out for no reason. His first three seasons were 14 game seasons. The 1982 strike shortened season cost him seven games. He graciously accepted a reduced role his last season to make room for Neal Anderson. Add it all up he lost approximately 16 games. If you add in these games he easily would've had 18,000 rushing yards. And Walter accomplished this on teams that were FAR FAR worse, on offense, than Barry Sanders' Lions, when you compare their first eight seasons. The Bears playbook early on, the joke went, was Payton left, Payton right, Payton middle. Imagine if Walter had Emmitt's O-line and offense? He'd probably would have rushed for 20,000 yards and received for 6,000. The Bears were bad and Walter could've called it quits after 9 seasons and retired. But he pushed through and got his Super Bowl ring.

Under no circumstances would Walter have retired after his 9th season, 1983. He was very close to Brown's record going into 1984, and was still playing All-Pro.

Greatest Running Back Ever and one of the greatest football players ever. Period end of Story. Side note: My dad got me one of Walter's early trading cards at a sports collectibles store outside Chicago. I think the card was from one of his Pro Bowl years. This was about 20 years ago. I was a little kid back then (obviously I wasn't alive when Walter played). I looked up how much the card is worth today and it's 500 bucks (my dad bought it for me for I think it was like 20 or something). I am definitely keeping that card. Rest in Peace, Sweetness. We still miss you. We'll always miss you. 🐻🏈

I'm a Lion fan who refuses to accept people saying Sanders was better than Payton. Payton blocked and caught the ball better than any other running back ever and ran for all those yards. If I had Payton and Sanders on my team Sanders wouldn't see the field

@@calronske1853 Brown was great but his shorter career and playing against smallish defenders make Brown hard to compare to today’s time. I understand people saying Brown was great, he was. I never put him in comparisons because I never saw him play. Videos are good but we didn’t see him play. Kinda like Chamberlain and Russell.

I saw that too. Ronnie Lott was a menace and guess who ended up on the ground? Not Walter.

My high school P.E Teacher was Virgil Livers. Yes....the cornerback with the infamous spear in the groin incident. He was also drafted in the same class as Payton. He told us many amazing stories about sweetness. One that sticks to me was Payton didn't lift weights much at all. His go to workout along with the hill runs was push ups. In today's NFL not lifting weights much as a running back is almost crazy. But, that's how strong and powerful sweetness was.

Someone said he benched 390 maybe he did a couple simple lifts, those hill runs though are iconic, jerry rice would run all types of hills too and I heard many greats running through snow, water and sand a lot. Plenty of great ways to train

The closest we’ve had to a one man offense. He didn’t have a Pro Bowl teammate on offense until his 10th NFL season. That’s QB, skill positions, or linemen. He was their best passer, their best blocker, an A+ receiver and of course a nonpareil runner. No one ever better

Jim Brown's all-time rushing record I saw him break that and that was a lot of fun but an earlier call her or an earlier thing said Walter Payton left Walter Payton right and Walter Payton up the middle it was like that for many many years that's all they would do is come in and try to stop painting and they couldn't do it he was the only offensive threat we had to Willie golf came along and Dennis McKinnon and Jim McMahon then there was no doubt about it we were going to get a win somewhere in the super bowl it's a shame that team didn't stay together and went three or four more or a couple more at least because they were dominant in 85 they lost to a rookie Dan Marino I don't know what happened that day but every other day they were down there I believe that Eric Dickerson had negative yardage in the NFC championship game against him and after we won that championship game we went on to beat the Patriots 46 to 10 in the super bowl prior to that with both shutouts the Giants and then the Rams and then beat the crap out of the Patriots that was the MVP of that game and Walter didn't score a touchdown because of the guy by the name of William Perry which is a shame but this girl was a better man and put two grand on the 25 to 1 odds at William Perry would score a touchdown in the super so he was a big winner that day but Peyton didn't score and that's a shame Jim McMahon said he would have given the painting the ball if he didn't think Payton would still score again later in the game

W.P. is one of the greatest. You can't ask for more. The heart and the tenacity. And he didn't play for my team. He was just a phenomenal football player.

this brought a few tears to my eyes. 34 is the reason why I became a Bears fan as a little kid in the West Suburbs watching MJ get that third title in ‘93. I was 7 years old, then someone started talking about Walter Payton and why they loved the Chicago Bears so much. when I think of my beloved team, 2 players come to mind: Dick Butkus and Walter Payton. Sweetness exuded class, personified greatness…and in my honest opinion, is the greatest running back in NFL history. He carried the whole city on his back for 12 years. I didn’t get to see him play live, but he gave me my favorite football team. Salute and Rest In Power, Mr. Walter Payton.

You never know what you got til it’s gone. We knew they were great, but it still seems we undervalued just how great. I grew up in that dump called chicago and we were gifted Walter, Gayle Sayers, and a home grown Dick Butkus. Between the music of the time (especially compared to now) and those guys, I was such a lucky bastard to grow up during that time. As an extra added bonus, I never saw any of those guys do any GD dance after a TD or tackle. I think it was Walter who said “When you score, act like you’ve been there before”.

gayle sayers was the first phenom running back of the era. well, it turned out he was the greatest, and to have Payton succeed him ... possibly the two greatest running backs of all-time. really !

I am a Packer fan but in those days all that was in my local market was the Bears, I loved these games and actually started rooting for the Bears because of the greatest running back of all time, the late, great Walter Payton. He could do it all and even played quarterback and threw some TD's. His strait arm was the best ever and he was fast, could break almost any tackles and was strong and brave. The all time best player in NFL history, or at least in the top 3.

The best football player I EVER saw. He was a do everything/anything player. He had the greatest combination of skills and running ability I ever saw. Most halfbacks are speed and juke guys like Sanders, Sayers, Dorsett and Faulk. Other guys are powerbacks like Brown, Campbell, Riggins and Alstott. Payton had juke AND could run you over and he did that at only 205lbs missing one game in 13 seasons. 🐐

When I was in junior high school, I had read a article in Sports Illustrated magazine on Walter Payton when he just came into the NFL and they had put some of the feast he was able to perform in the weight room and on the field just a physical specimen at such a young age and what a great running back....... the greatest ever and when you look at it he really only had maybe two to three good years his entire career, pre the 85 Bears the man pretty much did it all on his own, and the article, and the article it read that he could at 5"10 185lbs bench over 400lbs....walk the entire football field on his hands, flat footed throw a football 90 yards....not to mention what we all seen him do on the field as a player...he used to say if a defender would come ar him,he wanted to deliver the hit, not be hit and you'll see in some of hus highlights where he does just that....and never ever did I see watching him, anyone ever push,shove or take a cheap shot at him or get up in his face and talk smack......his legacy on the field was hus legendary play, heart ,will and team player ,and for that the Walter Payton award was created.....his legacy off the field was his children and their attitude towards life and society is a direct reflection of him...."sweetness" the greatest running back ever in my words...I wasn't able to watch Brown play...only in highlights.

I know this comment won't mean much but Walter Payton has been my favorite player since I was 7 years old and he passed away literally one day before I was born 11/04/1999 And with that I try and be as mentally tough as he was Walter is the greatest nfl player to ever live and he's name sweetness will live on forever🧡🧡

I was a kid in the suburbs of Chicago in the early 80’s . I wrote Walter Payton a letter along with Mike Singletary. They both wrote me back and included their players cards with autographs. A highlight to a young boy. I still have them. So classy of them in their busy schedules. I shed a few tears the day he died and felt a bittersweet feeling as Mike Singletary spoke of being by his side when he passed. Two icons in the sports world. Thank you for the reminder of how great he was. He was a artist on the field.

I got to meet Walter Payton when I was a little kid. He was the most kindhearted person I've ever met in my life.

My favorite player at that time, and so profound was his impact that he is still my favorite. The guy I wanted to be when I played tailback. His skills and his character-the elegance and dignity with which he played, just beautiful.

God took his chisel and crafted a running back that had all the tools....power, speed, quickness, agility, fearlessness, and absolute determination to succeed. You were the GREATEST OF ALL TIME, WALTER!

Walter Payton is my favorite running backs ever and one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. He was setting multiple records and earned the nickname Sweetness. He quickly established himself as the most versatile and powerful runner, breaking off tacklers, bouncing off defenders, passing skills and catching passes. He won the MVP award and he broke the rushing record for 275 yards in a single-game. He retired as the NFL’s all-time leading in rushing yards, touchdowns, yards from scrimmage and several other categories. His biggest accomplishment is helping his Bears dominate the NFL with a 15-1 record and a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots. He was more than just a complete football player, so he was a true legend.🏈🏈🏈🏈

Emmitt has most of the all time rushing records, so he is one of the best. However, I think Sweetness is not only the best/greatest running back all-time, but the best football player all-time. Great runner, pass-catcher, blocker, and even one of the best Bears QBs. Just the best imo

Jim Brown and Barry Sanders would like a word. Payton and Brown were awesome. Barry was the best. Smith is solidly in the top 35.

Most people, coaches and NFL Insiders who saw them still feel Payton is better.

​​@peterz22thomas5 - Unfortunately, the great Jim Brown is no longer with us. With Barry Sanders, he's on record stating breaking Payton's career rushing record wasn't important to him. So, likely, Barry wouldn't be interested in anything about this debate.

First off thank you so much. I’ve been waiting for this since you all started putting out videos ❤ But as they say… save the best-or the SWEETNESS-for last. Secondly, Sweetness is the toughest son of a gun to ever play this game. He was built like a tank and ran like one.

Walter Payton is by far the greatest NFL running back of all time and no one can compare to him not even king Henry and that is a fact 😌😌😌😊

@@calebalvarez1234Yeah,I’ll never forget the great blocks Sanders made,and the catches,oh and that time he threw a touchdown pass to the quarterback😂. If you believe as I do that the position of running back includes more than just running,Payton was the best ever.

​@@boataxe4605Oh, knock it off. Don't knock a great player like Sanders to build up Walter. Grew up in Chicago saw just about every game he played. I'm partial to Walter, but I totally understand some people who feel Sanders was a better runner.

Jim Brown IS STILL the best running back to grace a football field. I saw him play. Walter is the greatest FOOTBALL PLAYER ever. As has been noted, he was the best blocker not only in running back discussions, but the best blocker on the bears teams. Period. He threw TDS, kicked FGS, he punted, kickoff returns, turned into DB's at the sidelines and on and on. I watched all his plays. No hearsay.

One of my major heroes growing up , I will never forget “Sweetness.”🇺🇸🦅

He had a great career during that time. May he RIP.

His life keeps going! I watch all of his highlights! I’m to young to actually to have watched him played, but my parents always talk about him! He’s a beast!

Born 1980 north of Pittsburgh, I still remember watching Walter Payton as a kid in the 80s on ESPN highlights or nationally televised games. Steelers my team as Vikings also in 87. Anthony Carter became my idol (besides my dad). I followed the highlights, stats in the paper, football cards and knew how great Mr. Walter Payton was. Gave my Vikings a run for their money. It was crazy back then being a fan of a team out of town. Only see them if nationally televised and espn highlights for a minute or two.

Don't know what I'd do without you all. Great community, great channel, great people, great plays. All GREATNESS

Watching one of the pre game warm up on one of the football pregame shows they showed Walter doing head over heels somersaults from end zone to end zone, what an acrobatic feat and he made it look so simple and graceful.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but he accomplished so much on terrible teams with terrible blocking and no threat of a passing game until 83/84. Everyone knew he was the Bears offense, and they still couldn't contain him. Imagine if he had that Dallas O line of the 90's.

One of my FIRST MEMORIES in life was watching him run. I was born in 83' and my family kept vhs's of the 85 team and we'd keep on loop some of his runs lol. This guy is a legend and before MJ was EVERYTHING to the city of Chicago. Gone too soon .... RIP.

He doesn't seem extra fast, just smart, careful, agile, and a pain to take down.

When I was a kid I thought Walter was good, but really helped by quality blocking. But really looking critically, nobody -- nobody -- ever made their blockers look as good as Walter Payton did. He didn't just "hit the hole" he ran into the future, putting defenders in positions where they WOULD BE blocked. If you watch when a play is busted and there are five or six defenders, Walter, and one lineman (or one wide receiver, or even just Walter and the QB) the lineman always got one good block in. That's not luck, that's not even the skill of the lineman -- that's Walter Payton playing four dimensional chess and setting up the entire play where he gets at least one block, gets at least an extra yard from his teammate, then makes another for himself. Sanders, Dickenson, Simpson were all better pure runners (though Payton was a great pure runner); Campbell and Brown were better power runners (though Walter was a great power back.) But no one was even close in making his teammates look better, and for that I've got to think that Walter Payton was the best overall running back ever.

I’m old enough to have witnessed some of the greatest running backs play the game, Brown, Simpson, Dickerson, and Walter Payton is at the top of the list, truly my favorite football player of all time, Walter was a wonderful role model on and off the field, thank you Walter Payton for blessing us with your greatness…I’m not ashamed to say I cried when I heard we lost him 🙏🏾🕊️
