Walter Isaacson on the "Demons and Drives" of Elon Musk | Amanpour and Company

Elon Musk, the world’s richest individual, is a divisive figure: a villain to some, a genius to others. He is at the forefront of electric cars, space travel, social media, and now artificial intelligence. The Tesla boss joined other tech heavyweights in an historic meeting with congressional leaders in Washington on Wednesday to discuss the risks and opportunities of AI. Like other billionaires, Musk is willing and able to affect policy, even amid a war. Our colleague Walter Isaacson spent two years shadowing Musk. The end result, a 670-page biography, is making waves, as Walter and Christiane discussed when they sat down together in New York.

If the American government does not want a private citizen to have the ability to affect war, then the US Govt must either have their own system, or like Elon said, buy/rent equipment from him. This is not Musk's shortcoming, it is the American government's shortcoming. The American government is too busy tearing us all apart and raising money.

Yep. The question is, why does the US Gov take so long to take over Starlink for Ukraine military through a contract agreement? SpaceX even had to beg for the contract. They finally did give them the contract last July, but that's just way too late.

Who will fill Walter Issacsons shoes? Who will come up after Jon Meacham? Great writers. Is anyone writing or reading anymore?

They made a movie about all this in the 80s called “Real Genius”. Val Kilmer played Elon Musk.

Give me a moment to conceptualize Kilmer as Musk in ANY medium. Sorry, just not working for me.

Starlink donation to Ukraine was a humanitarian gesture, similar to prior ones. Then Starlink being repurposed for attack - I guess that's not really what Elon signed up for and attacks really go against the original humanitarian intent.

It's sad his father emasculated him. He comes across as a man-child where vanity and grandiose hobby-like pursuits has come to fruition from massive wealth, not expertise. We're seeing this with other current-day billionaires and the pitfalls that stem from it.

no elon musk wasnt doing more than anyone else to make EV's, he was the first to set up a big production plant for EV's, he dosnt make his own batteries, his AI driving programe dosn't work, real manufacturers of cars are now making real worthwhile EV's, and they now outsell Teslas, elon is not a tech savy genious, he is a lucky, over rich, normie, how he is acting, is exactly how a normie would act, more money than mom and dad, no one to shout at him any more when he is bad, all these people to talk to and .... maybe i learn something? like how to tie a tie, or different ways of tying a tie.

Electric cars or self-driving ev cars are the most DANGEROUS cars out there. Why? Because if you get in an accident, there's a very good chance you'll be doused in and disfigured from battery acid plus it's flammable. No plastic surgery can correct that.

@@siremak7991 If I had as much money as Musk, I could hire enough technical geniuses and infrastructure to do pretty much anything. I'd start with desalinating sea water and delivering it to deserts to make them habitable and productive. Also, I think finding a technical solution to diverting flood water to areas in drought would be fun. Now if I could just find that $267B.

Hey, irregardless of what Russia claims, Crimea is occupied Ukrainian territory, so attacking Russian forces in Crimea is defensive!
