Walt Disney's Private Apartment | DISNEYLAND

Ойын-сауық

To construct the most complex and immersive amusement park enterprise ever conceived, Walt Disney needed to keep a close eye on progress. He had an apartment built for him and his family on the second floor of the Main Street Fire House, and this is what's inside.

Therefore on my channel I do not allow the perpetuation of indecent remarks. -Particularly because there are families that watch my content and I must protect them and the viewers who come to my channel to escape the harshness of KZread comment sections. If you are going to comment about how Disney (either Walt or the company today) must use this apartment for such acts...it will not be tolerated, that is indecent and 'pot stirring' comments, not opinion, much less fact. My gf and I did the Walk in Walt's Footsteps tour about 10years ago, they stopped the tour not long after. It's really neat inside, like going back in time. Reminds me of my grandmothers house. We weren't allowed to take pictures in there, and it was mostly roped off as well to keep people from wandering and touching things, but the guide would take one picture of you in there if you wanted. Funny thing is when I tell people I've been in there they either don't believe I was in there, or don't believe the apartment even exists. I still have my pin with Walt's face on it from when we went.

New Orleans Apartment 1974 - I had the good fortune to have dinner in Club 33 when my brother worked as a ride operator on the Jungle Cruise. He was dating a waitress who worked in Club 33 and somehow our family ended up having dinner in the then mostly unknown restaurant. After dinner she showed us part of Walt’s unfinished apartment with it’s view of Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer’s Island, one of the most scenic views in the park with Mark Twain and Columbia tied up at their berths. The apartment was left as it was the day Walt died 8 years earlier, bare wood floor decking, some of the wood trim and finish carpentry done or seemingly underway when stopped, ladders and scaffolds around the entire area, just as a unfinished home under construction would look. If only I had my camera.

My grand parents had a club 33 membership for like 50 years and I have fond memories and even birthdays up there as a kid. Later when I became an adult they would let me use their membership to go on fancy dinners or lunches with those I was dating. Not cheap but at least you don't have to pay to get in the park. Very cool that you got to go enjoy it during better times versus state it's in now

One of my best memories of DL was the afternoon a friend and I were treated to a very detailed tour of the New Orleans space. Just the two of us and a very friendly cast member. We got to peek in every room (yes, even the missing toilet bathroom), the room used for printing posters, walk around the upstairs outdoor patio, and then just as it was turning dusk, be invited by the gallery staff to sit on the small deck and watch Fantasmic with one other couple while eating strawberry deserts. I will never forget that experience.

But you’re right, running up those stairs always felt special. In 2016 I went on the Walking in Walt’s Footsteps tour and was able to see all the rooms in the Dream Suite. The level of detail was extraordinary! Disneyland is both steadfast and ever-changing so you never know what experiences are once in a lifetime or timeless. In sime sense, even Walt was careful in overspending too soon, that is, he moderated the expenses for what was practical at the time. Having a studio/one bedroom suite that was suitable for himself and Lillian at a moment’s notice, was a very smart idea. Even if, in his mind about a bigger apartment, i wonder if he was a bit overwhelmed by the impact Disneyland made on everybody. That indicates he wanted to be in careful control of public and investor scrutiny in those early days as to not apoear ostentatious with other investors’ loans. Conversely, if this story were told today, with different CEO’s, the first thing they would have built was the CEO’s executive mansion, and cut back on what the public got.

Imagine LIVING in Disneyland. The park would seem so eerie and lonely after closing, and since a lot of it is built to look like a town village, it’s like roaming around in an abandoned town. @@AlextheHistorian I used to work for Six Flags over Georgia, and our park gets pretty creepy at night. Especially around the carousel hill, Gotham City, and Monster Mansion areas. I guess it’s cause of the park’s aesthetic; It doesn’t have that pleasantly perfect 1950’s vibe that Disneyland/World has. It feels a bit more grounded and “corporate”. It also has a lot of crazy urban myths surrounding it lol.

Oh thank you so much for this video, Alex! I'm guessing you got to see the great apartment when you worked there as a guide? I know one person who had the $ to pay for that exclusive tour. So interesting to hear about the furniture all being replaced, etc. I loved going to the art gallery above Pirates when it was there, always dreamed of staying in the "Dream Suite" but never lucked out. Thanks so much for the research and great content 😀

Thanks Linda! Indeed, I used to guide the "Walk in Walt's Disneyland Footsteps" tour and that sometimes included a stop inside the apartment (on days of good weather).

"...available for viewing, at a hefty price." Well, yes. Walt's apartment was included in the Disneyland main street walking tour my wife and I took in November 2022. The cost? $360 for us both. This included cookies and soft drinks served on Walt's veranda adjoining the apartment at the conclusion of the tour. Photography in the apartment was forbidden except of subjects standing against one particular wall. A cast member photographer was present to take these photos.

Just so I’m clear . The cost was $360 plus the park entrance fee. I’m sure foolish question. Personally I feel DL costs have gone a bit much, last time I was there the new restaurant shopping area had just been built and California Adventure? I think I have that right, it was built over the parking lot that had been there from the beginning. I was raised on Disneyland we lived fairly close and went every summer for birthdays. With ticket book in hand we could run free meet back up with my parents a couple times a day get a long multi colored pencil with a eraser on top that was one of the Disney characters. I always chose Dumbo. I still have a few ticket books one even still has a E ticket in it. All the other A and B tickets. The E tickets were the best part how or why there is one left is amazing.

@@kathy6372 Right you are, the main street tour was $180 each, plus of course the price of admission.

Sadly when I went this past year to Disney, the Walt tour wasn't available, but my boyfriend did give me the run down, as he had done it several times before. I went to Disney in October for my birthday, so it' was pretty tricked out for Halloween, and whenever I do go again, I'd love to go during Christmas. Disney in my head feels very 1950/60's Christmas, Bing Crosby and the likes. I know it'd probably be extremely hectic, as the 12th of October on a random Wednesday was lol.

Thanks for this great video of Walt's apartment, and its history I remember when coronavirus first came to the US and then California and everything was getting shut down including the parks and I remember one time a news chopper cant remember which sorry, but they were flying over Disneyland and pointing to the apartment on main street and the lantern was left on I called my mom over to show her that it was still on, and I remember right away I don't know how long this dumb pandemic will last or how many will die, but that lamp is the hope for not only are country but for the whole world that one day this nightmare will be put behind us
