Wall Furring Strips w/Plus Nuts | Ram ProMaster Van Build Series | Van Life | Solo Female Traveler

In this video I share how I installed furring strips to the walls of my van with plus nuts. This will provide a secure foundation for me to attach my walls and cabinetry too while also leaving space for insulation and wires to run behind the walls.
Tune in to my next video where I'll be insulating the inside of my van with 3M Thinsulate.
Until then, be sure to subscribe to my channel and turn on notifications so you don't miss a beat!

    These videos are awesome! I'd just add a quick suggestion that regular bolts/washer/nuts could be used anytime affixing the wood furring strips to the metal in situations where the back is accessible. So the first horizontal wood strips could be attached with regular hardware through most holes. Rivet Nuts (or Plus Nuts or Cross Nuts) are great when you can't access the back ("blind nuts"). Just saves a bit of $$.

  • @LaurenLawliss

    so as I previously commented the level to which we both identically approached the van builds is beyond insane, I didn't do video but I did to pics.....i'm shocked, to find someone that saw the way to insulate and do a build this way, the only thing I can , ok maybe I can add more than 1 thing, but look into the Flettner fans, saw one in London and I was like OMG this is brilliant, free wind powered ventilation, beyond that i've been experimenting with the Peltier way of cooling/heating that with solar is free AC/Heat and would take a van build beyond the next level

    I thought maybe you were overdoing it by taking the snaps off, and detaching the overhead lining … however, I bought the tool at O’Reilly’s, and so I figured why not, and went ahead and popped off the snaps. Oh boy! I am so glad that I did, because apparently a mouse had been living up in the headliner lining, and there was a nest and a lot, a lot of poop. Yuck. I’m so glad you recommended this and today I’m going to try to sanitize the area as much as possible. Thank you for your time and great instructional videos.

    Hello Lauren, I'm Claude from Québec. Do you still consider it worthed it doing framing with plywood instead of cheap construction wood (1x4) ? Russion plywood is quite expensive...any thoughts ? Cheers

  • @LaurenLawliss

    @LaurenLawliss

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey there! I did plywood because I had it on hand and plywood tends to expand and contract a lot less than a solid piece of wood. Yes, russian plywood is expensive but like I said I had wood to spare and it is really durable and strong. I do see others who use a solid piece of wood instead of plywood and it works. If I had to do it again I’d do it the same way. Totally up to your personal preference. Hope this helps☺️

    You are helping us soooo much! thanks!! Question: In the video you mention that the machine screws are 1 inch long, but on your ordering list- they are longer - what do you recommend? We want to do exactly what is laid out in your video, but can you recommend any substitute for the 3/4 inch baltic birch? Thanks!!

  • @LaurenLawliss

    @LaurenLawliss

    Ай бұрын

    Glad you found the video helpful! I used an inch and a half AND an inch and a quarter long screws for the furring strips. Any 3/4” board would work, baltic birch is best since it has multiple layers and is more durable.

    Hi Lauren! Your videos are amazing, always very helpful! I’d like to know if you are going to share the process of your ceiling, I’m curious to know if you used the plus nuts to attach the ceiling direct to the van or if you used some wood as furring strips between the metal of the van and the ceiling.

  • @LaurenLawliss

    @LaurenLawliss

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much! I am working on the ceiling video now (along with 6 other van build videos so stay tuned😉). For the ceiling furring strips I used 10-32 and 1/4-20 plusnuts in the circles and rectangles of the ceiling ribs. I cut 1/2 inch baltic birch plywood into 2.5 inch wide strips that I then drilled holes into (after the same play dough trick) for my bolts to go through the furring strip and into the plus nut. From there I attached my tongue and groove ceiling to the furring strips. Let me know if you have any other questions!🤩

  • @LaurenLawliss

    Hey there! The top vertical furring strips run into the rectangle holes built into the van and then the other end is glued and screwed into the upper horizontal furring strip. Let me know if you need some more clarification and good luck with your install😁

    Are you worried they will be flopping around in the hole at the top or is it pushed all the way up and touching the top on the inside?

    hi Lauren! thanks for your videos!! Q: re your (future) walls: do you plan to cover those 2 main vertical middle "beams" (which are on either side of the middle of the van) with plywood or keep them exposed? If covered with "wall' plywood", will you connect the plywood to the furring strips on either side? Hope that makes sense!

  • @LaurenLawliss

    Hi Milena! I have installed Shiplap walls over my bed area and will be adding a plywood wall over the kitchen area to install a backsplash. Both types of walls will be secured to the furring strips. For the Shiplap I used a nail gun. For the plywood wall I’ll use screws since they will be covered by the backsplash. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions☺️

    Hey Lauren! I love the videos! My husband and I are doing our own conversion and following your lead! I have a question about the framing for the cabinets! How do you know that the furring strip won’t bounce around if it’s only attached to the top horizontal furring strip? 16:44 thanks!!!!

  • @LaurenLawliss

    @LaurenLawliss

    Hey! Great question. The upper verticals hold my overhead cabinets so I knew once I screwed the cabinet into them that it would pull the board forward into the front edge of the rib opening and that holds it in place so it doesn’t move. If you don’t plan on putting cabinetry up top and do just a continuous wall to ceiling then I would do that section differently to accommodate that specific plan. Hope this helps. Good luck on your build☺️🫶🏻

  • @LaurenLawliss

    That is sound deadening to help with road noise which is usually loud around the wheel wells so I did full coverage there!

    My reasoning for 3/4” over 1/2” is that it will be stronger, the clearance along the bottom edge of the wall to floor in a ProMaster so I don’t need to scribe the backs of my cabinetry, and if you use machine screws then you need to remove some wood with a paddle bit for the screw to sit flush (you wouldn’t have much wood left on a 1/2” board). But you could find different bolts with a large flat head that wouldn’t require you to remove wood for the screw. In conclusion, I would personally use 3/4”.

    But if the chassi becomes cold, and the wooden beems are connected to them without some kind of vapor barrier between the moist will enter the beems and might start to mold, won't it?

  • @LaurenLawliss

    @LaurenLawliss

    10 ай бұрын

    Moisture under the subfloor and behind the walls in a van conversion are inevitable and extremely difficult, if not impossible, to avoid. Also, adding layers under the subfloor and filling the ribs on the floor will not allow that moist air to escape - that is when there is a risk for mold. So I didn’t do anything but the wood floors which I painted with a water sealant. No complaints about the floor being cold. However, knowing what I know now, if I had to redo this project, I may look into laying a thin barrier of so nature between the subfloor and van floor to reduce thermal bridging, but it is fine the way it is. Like I mentioned in the video, there are several ways I can combat cold floors (I installed a heater, floor heat pad, lay down a rug, wear socks etc.)☺️

    I like the concept of riv nuts into frame but since you already have predrilled holes why can’t you just use those holes with large washers and nuts and bolts.

  • @LaurenLawliss

    How would you tighten the nut onto the bolt when the bolt goes inside the rib?😉 when you can’t access the backside of the bolt, you can’t install a nut and tighten it down. Hopefully that answers your question😁
