Walkthrough Videos #46: A Feast for Odin (Ein Fest für Odin)

Ойындар

I take a look at A Feast for Odin, designed by Uwe Rosenberg, published by Feuerland Spiele and Zman Games in 2016. It's an economical development game for 1-4 players, ages 14 and up and plays in about 30 minutes per player. This video is a walkthrough of a full three player game, aiming at teaching you the rules and showing you what the game plays like.
Please note: I'm not trying to teach you the strategy of the game, actually some of the moves will probably be not really good at all.
Many thanks to Frank and Uwe at Feuerland Spiele for providing me with the review copy for this video!

Absolutely wonderful playthrough. I've had my eye on this game since leaked photos of the prototype made its way to the internet. You've gotten me even more excited than I was before. You've shown the bulk of what the game has to offer and I can't wait to get my hands on this one!

Extremely well done, sir! The rules mistakes were probably unavoidable in a game this complex, and you corrected them perfectly as they popped up. I've been a fan of your walkthrough videos for quite some time now... thank you for doing such a service for the gaming community! Also, "breathless planning" eh? I truly laughed out loud when you said that! :D

Thank you so much for all the effort you put into this. I have been waiting for this video since you uploaded the unboxing and was very happy to discover it today. :) Based on your walkthrough I can now say that this game is a must-buy in Essen for me! I'm really looking forward to it (both Essen and Odin *g*).

Thank you for your videos! I enjoy your thorough and clear explanations of each game and appreciate that you take the time to edit for corrections to ensure gameplay is correct. Caverna is a family favorite; and we were able to clarify any questions we had by watching your walk through. I'm sure A Feast for Odin will be a favorite as well. Your videos are excellent supplements to the rule books....many thanks, again!

Great video, thanks for showing different strategies. It's incredible how leaving the main board so full of -1 left the player not so far from the winner! It shows there are many paths to victory, I like it.

It turns out that your explanation at 15:30 re: updating mountain strips is incorrect. Remaining silver is not automatically removed, though I also misread the rule book on this point too as the rule is poorly phrased. Thanks much for the otherwise terrific video.

The official clarification can be found here: www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1647297/updating-mountain-strips Additionally, it is mentioned now in the official errata: boardgamegeek.com/filepage/138082/errata-and-faq-1st-english-edition "Rulebook, page 11 The details about the Mountain Strips should read: • In this phase, remove the leftmost resource (i.e., closest to the arrow) from each face-up mountain strip and return it to the general supply (this can be wood, stone, ore or silver). If all spaces are empty, remove the mountain strip."

Wow, thanks for making this video. I can't even imagine how long it took in total. While I eagerly await my chance to try this out, I have to say that a cursory overview of the actions board makes me go cross-eyed... That, along with the mish-mash of game mechanics from other games... Uwe... what are you doing? IMO his big game designs are becoming more and more monstrous. But let's hope it's the type of monstrous that feels fun to play.

Thanks for the Run-through. The solo aspect sounds interesting that you leave the meeples on the board. Have you though of trying it with an addition color? that is instead of 1 color staying on the board, would it work if both stay there while using the tiles for 3-4 as mentioned at the 56 minute mark.

Apparently the crucifix on the blue tile board is miss located and should be on the bottom part of the board. Do you know if, in a second print run of the game, if they will correct the printing error?

I have a question: You can do any of those actions as long as you pay the cost of vikings above? Because it seems like a lot of choices

  • @HoloDoc42

    @HoloDoc42

Yes, you can select any space you want (if you have enough vikings left). Although some spaces have additional costs in silver or require you to actually have certain goods to convert them into something else.

Awesome runthrough Michael! Great looking game! On a side note... and completely unrelated.... I saw how day turned to night as you did your runthrough... And your voice got softer (your child was asleep, and you didn't want to awaken him/her I presume (?)) Your excellently edited version is about an hour... how long was it unedited? How much time to learn the rules before you started? Thanks again!

  • @HoloDoc42

No, she sleeps to deep (and to far away for that matter) to be disturbed by this. Speaking softer wasn't on purpose. I didn't realize it myself until editing, I guess I was just getting tired ;-).

The unedited material was 2 hours, 7 minutes and 22 seconds :-). I read the rulebook twice from end to end and browsed through the appendix before starting to film, but I have no idea how long that took.

They are all unique. 45 starting occupations, 145 to draw during the game. However, the 190 cards are split into three decks (A is for beginners, B and C for more advanced players). But you can shuffle them all together.

@MiWi: One Question, is a Mountainside gone if there is nothing on it, or when there is just the 2 silver on it, too (After putting the most left one away)? The rules are not completly clear on that point. Also a great Video ;)

They do clarify this somewhere on BGG forums, and my understanding is it's when you remove all items from the mountainside, it goes away. I.e., it's possible to have a mountainside with a single piece of double silver during a round of play. /thread/1647297/updating-mountain-strips
