Or just build a walkup basement. It'll daylight a set of double doors and allows you to move large items in and out rather than carrying things up and down the stairs. Sofas, cabinetry, pool tables, sinks, toilets, you get the gist. You only need to build retaining walls for the doors while still negating the amount of dirt needed to remove from the property

Thanks for this important video. This video quells some of my concerns as the lot and custom modern ranch style home my architect and I designed will sit perfectly as planned. Facing my modern ranch home (to be built), it is like that pictured in your video with the garage on the right and the lower elevation and walkout on the left. My lot is within a new community that has been carved out amongst a rock formed mountain in a very mountainous MidAtlantic state. The community is off the beaten path, so no thru traffic (YAY!), and very connected to nature and wildlife. I just wished I had chosen two of the widest possible sets of sliding doors rather than one set of double French doors, two windows and one single door entrance for when I create an ADU = Accessory Dwelling Unit for supplemental income. This video is helpful. Thanks again.

Thank you for this! Where are you guys located? So, I get your point about the unnecessary over engineering. However, there are some situations that might require this. For example, the house is located on the bluff of lake MI, code only allows 2.5 level structures. You need to move the house onto a new foundation and want to make that basement living space. You need as much light as possible and ideally a walkout and view on the lake. So, I feel in this case it might be worth the headache. How long does it take for the dirt to settle into place for the slab not to crack? If we grade the lot this summer, would it be ready next summer for a garage slab?

I walk laps around my basement where it's cool and listen to the radio and I take me a cup of coffee and I stop take a drink every few minutes.. I love it down there..

Hi I’m in norther indiana myself & am buying a home. Last example you had but garage is on Garage on left side of home. and walkout on right side of home. Does have retaining walls. Has a crack in it. Is this something I should be proactive about? Looked like someone had already fixed it(filling crack). And how prone is this to flooding? I did not see any type of drain system in place. Is it expensive to install a drain system.
