Walking in Juneau, Alaska - What to Do on Your Day in Port

We take a short walk through Juneau, Alaska. We walk up Franklin St., the shopping area, past the Red Dog saloon. We walk to the top of the hill and then down to the Governor's Mansion.

We lived there 1971-74. For Juneau, this was a typical beautiful summer day! Things sure have changed. Not sure if we want to go back for our 50th anniversary or not.

you almost went down the steps that would have taken you to my old house ,though its no longer there on Willoughby Ave .I was able to see the Governor's Mansion from my home. that was in1963 when our house caught fire and we moved back to Fremont California, big difference.

It was cool rewatching this after my own visit and recognizing a lot of the places I walked by. What you DON'T see in this video or ANY Juneau video for that matter is how many homelesses and tweakers hang out in the tourist area, a lot of them very aggressive. We were taking pictures of some houses on Seward St, across from the Capitol and some tweaker came out of his house and just stared at us, then started yelling at us that we're stupid for coming up there during a pandemic. I was deliberately watching this video to see if you walked by it too, but it looks like you just missed him. I'm honestly surprised you didn't at the very least encounter a street argument. Maybe, it's because I was there for a whole week, which increased my chances of seeing something happened, but it wasn't just an isolated incident. This was an everyday occurance. We even saw people shooting up in broad daylight. I knew Alaskan cities had a bad reputation, but I had no idea it was THIS bad. I can't imagine anyone wanting to move here or bring their kids here for vacation. I'm not even exaggerating. This is the worst I've seen it anywhere. It's really bad.

@@PortMonkeys That figures. You're not the only one. I'm starting to think maybe they tidy the place up when cruise ships are in town. But reading comments from locals, on the very limited reports that exist, this seems to be a major problem. The issue is, there is a homeless shelter right in the middle of the tourist district. A lot of them are cool, but there are others who aren't the best people. On our first morning, there was a homeless guy sleeping in a tent right on the wharf. I already did 😉

An excellent tour of Alaska's capital city - only 3 ways to get there (aircraft, boat, or born there). Your walking tour is great and you got alot of the great points of interest in town detailed - a very great job. As someone who worked there a summer a long time ago the only thing I would add is that for those who can, to walk up to the top of Mount Roberts (a 2.5 to 4 hour hike) and take the tram down (which was free to take down at least years ago). As someone else commented this post is one of the best of Juneau.

Where's Nimbus? In the mid 80's, at the site of where the Seward statue is now, there used to be a huge, green, modern sculpture called "Nimbus" in front of the Capital building. You either loved it or you hated it (I guess the haters won out). I used to live in a house just a few doors up from the Governor's mansion on Calhoun (you almost walked past it, but changed direction). Amazing how 'built up' the dock areas along Franklin are now - of course, most of that wasn't even there even in the 80's when I lived there - including the Red Dog, btw, which is a completely fabricated, 'modern' structure. Juneau is a beautiful place to live, however.

A must do in Juneau: visit Mendenhall glacier with visitor center and walk to Nugget Falls, fly over Juneau ice field, visit 2 museums, enjoy the view from top of State office building and library, taste fudge and see newly installed Aquilleans along the coast. If you are lucky, you can see biannual native Celebration. Say hi to Patsy Ann statue. I love Juneau and visited many times.
