American Towns: Skagway, Alaska
American Towns: Skagway, Alaska
This is a walking tour of Skagway, Alaska. I was on a cruise to Alaska and we stopped in Skagway. We were on the Norwegian Cruise Lines, Jewel. It is a beautiful ship and we really had a good time. But like every cruise the best part is exploring the towns you stop in.

@Frank Lee lol, nah, it does. However, my sister doesn’t have a lot of time to do things like watch videos like this. She’s very busy. It’s a bummer, because these videos are 10/10. ❤️
GREETINGS FROM PALM SPRINGS CALIFORNIA 🌴... BEAUTIFUL TRAIN RIDE BRIGGS. 😃👍
I loved this video. Couldn't help laughing at what that girl told your wife. 🤣🤣🤣
Nice! Haven’t been to Skagway since 1967. Looks pretty prosperous and urban now. 😂 Thx for the tour! 👍

Thanks for watching!
Thanks 😊 for the memories. My wife were in Alaska in July 2002, for a 12 day cruise, the Carnival Spirit, a suite upgrade, which was a fairly new ship then. We also did the rail from Anchorage to Fairbanks with a night at Denali. We did stop at Skagway and we're able to take the train ride to the Canadian border. The stories about the Cemetery there was interesting too there.
Many old buildings there belong to the NPS. Lots of history here, there was a contingent of Buffalo Soldiers stationed there in 1899 to bring the town to order. The history of building the railway is an outstanding read. Skagway proper doesn't get much snow as its in the rain/snow shadow. Skaway gets about a third of the snowfall that neighboring Haines gets.. However up the road toward the pass gets hammered and the road to Whitehorse closes often.
I think I’m going to love this series. I’ve watched your channel for years and enjoy the regular format but this wins for me! Btw really cute little tourist town!
I remember going there back in 1990 on a cruise. & I rode that train. It was awesome 1♥️
I went here this year on a cruise. It was such a nice little town!
Good afternoon Briggs!!! Have a nice day!!!🇺🇸🪖👮♂️
I worked in Skagway for the past 6 months. It is a beautiful town and I love to see videos about it! It looks like you had a good Ocotober weather day on one of our last ships in town. The height of the season is really busy and fun but those last few ships had a better idea of what Skagway feels like as the season slows down. I hope you enjoyed your trip and thankyou for documenting your visit!
Lived in Skagway as a kid (spent the rest of my growing up elsewhere in AK). Before the road was built and the cruise ships stopped. In fact I was the paperboy delivering the Anchorage newspaper to the first few cruise ships to stop there. Was a hoot. Fun place to be as a kid then since I had the run of the town and a town full of baby sitters my mom could call to find out where I was. Helped wash fire trucks at the fire dept. Tried to visit the ghost in the Golden North (unsuccessful). Explored the WWII military barracks that burned down in the 80s. They were behind the Catholic church. Still have my "bail papers" that got me out of "jail" for dancing with a can-can girl at the "Trail of 98" show.
Proud to call Skagway my home, such a great community!
Nice to see you in a vlog! It looks like a beautiful place! Thank you for the video!
Went here at the beginning of September of this year. It was probably our favorite port. Got to ride the train and the weather was fabulous. Sunny in the low 70s.
This town looks so peaceful Briggs, thanks for the tour!
I lived and worked there for just about a year. I opened up Goldrush brewing company as the brewmaster in 2009. Lived a dream of being a brewmaster at 50 years old. I drove from Fairfield California in January by myself and it was a 2600 mile 6 day trip. Quite the adventure let me tell you. I saw moose and buffalo and once I got to British Columbia only drove from sun up to sun down and planned my lodging around that.
I will love to go to alaska im 67 years and i llve the cold weather and peacifull places
This time of year is the perfect time to visit. Fewer mosquitoes to contend with compared to the middle of summer.
Love these small town videos. They are great because many would be interesting places to visit and also if someone ever decides to take the plunge and move out of the city to a small town.
What a great Alaskan olde timey town this is, it looks so peaceful here, as if time has somehow slowed down minus the cares and woes of the lower 48. Great shots of momentary sunshine with small patches of blue skies along with mountain sides nestled in a foggy misty rain. Thanks for this wonderful picture window.
Just an fyi. That actually was the old fire station In your video. They have a new modern fire station that would rival most major cities.
I have a friend who lives in Skagway and loves it there.
Ah, we recently vlogged a day here when visiting on Discovery Princess - it’s SO beautiful!
My wife and I went to Skagway on a cruise ship several years ago and we took the Jeep tour to the Klondike. When we got back I saw that we could have taken the train. And I love trains. But the jeep tour is nice, you should try it!
How Beautiful, Alaska is definitely on my list. Thanks for sharing
Nice video! I loved Skagway. You could do a whole video on how the school kids travel to other towns to play sports! Some of them involve overnight trips on the ferry. I hope you stopped at Hoonah (Icy Point). Fascinating town as well!

Back when I was a kid me and my middle school friends went to Skagway for a bit, slept on the floor of the pescatarian church there. Went up into the mountains and swam in a lake.
Been in Alaska 30 years and haven't _quite_ made it to Skagway yet. Thanks for this glimpse!
Am catching up on some of your videos and came across this and Ketchikan. Just booked an Alaskan Cruise yesterday. First time i have seen videos of the towns. Thx for posting!
Love this format. I've watched a ton of your other videos and like them as well. This is a great changeup.
It looks like an interesting town. Thanks for the look around.
I actually applied to be City Manager of Skagway about 14 years ago. I figured, only busy 6 months a year and I can fish to my heart's content. I did not make it to the final round. That's an old rotary snow plow train. I know because (nerd alert) after our family did the White Pass tour eons ago (cruise ship), I bought an N scale model train version of that snow plow engine. Fascinating story regarding the former rail worker.
I worked for Holland America Princess - Alaska division as a tour bus driver in Ketchikan. The girl I met in orientation was sent to Skagway so we would take time off and visit each other. It was so fun there! Ketchikan is really neat too. Really enjoyed this video! Maybe one point I’d recommend is you can actually drive to Skagway. Ketchikan is off the road system but one of these summers if I ever go back to driving a tour bus, I plan on requesting to work in Skagway & drive my car to the town.
Spent some time in Skagway on a motorcycle trip back in 2017. The train ride was incredible. Very interesting place. Great history. We loaded up on the Alaska Highway Ferry in Skagway and rode it to Prince Rupert, BC and a long ride back to Texas!
I worked in the Golden North Hotel and Moe's Frontier Bar. Tough town for year around living. Season begins in May... Ends in September. Termination dust on the mountains is the clue for getting out. Lots of friends still live there and I admire each one of them ❤
I took the train from the Yukon to Skagway in 2007. It was a day trip and we went back to Canada. There was a cruise ship docked and the town was loaded with tourists. I remember those Russian churches & I counted 26 jewellery shops.
I love these walking tours.
What a beautiful view at the end ❤
Thank you for this, as a person who likes to visit the US as a tourist on a regular bases these podcasts that you have are brilliant. Adds places to our list. Please keep it up.

I spent nearly the whole ride outside taking photos ! Such amazing views 😮
Lovely video and great advice about Glacier Bay!
That railway is one of the highlights of my life ❤
Was there this past June. Nice and I took the rail way. Utterly fantastic.
I was there at 2018 , nothing much but you will have fun there as a traveler.
Cool place to visit while on a cruise ship. Plenty of places to spend your tourist money. Wonderful natural scenery. Worth the visit.
Briggs, good tour as usual!
Awesome video. I grew up in Hoonah in SE Alaska. You are correct ... Glacier Bay is an amazing place.
Omg the timing, I was on holland America to skagway oct 4 as well
I was there in late July this year. The town was packed with tourists from several cruise ships. I like the scenes from your video much better. But I do understand people there need the tourism income. Our HAL cruise ship gave us complimentary train tickets for the scenic ride. It was rainy and chilly in the mountain and hard to stay outside. Sorry to hear the mudslide. Thank you for showing us what’s it like during low season.
I visited Skagway in 1968 as a sailor on a Canadian destroyer escort the H.M.C.S Yukon and took the trip on the White Pass.Yukon railway to Whitehorse incredible trip ,Thanks for the memories
Really nice video here. A nice change of pace from those series you did about “Top Ten Worst Places to Live” in certain states. I’m certainly looking forward to viewing more footage like this. Thanks so much from a random regular guy in Western Canada 🇨🇦
This is Great Love Briggs 💘 ❤ 💕 💖 💗 ♥
What a beautiful town!
It is the edge of the wilderness. If not for the train to the Yukon and the old Chilkoot trail, it would have never existed. All the gold was in Yukon....the folks here just were smart enough to capitalise on it
Thanks Briggs.

You bet
If you ever get a chance go visit Reid Falls by the town cemetery. 20-30 min walk from the cruise port.
Greetings from the pprc great video as usual thanks for doing it.🇺🇸
There on a cruise some years ago. Hope Glacier Bay pleased you - 65 miles of glacier were gone when we were there, I thought it was pitiful, and soon to be renamed Moraine Bay.
such a better bargain than the train is a tour bus on road that runs parallel to it - so much cheaper, & multiple places to stop to see wildlife, & a much more intimate experience
I work on that ship before! But I did that train ride . But with a different ship though .
I just got a youtube account not too long ago. I been watching your videos for 2 years now and i want to say i love your commentary and your videos are really relaxing.
Skagway is a great little Cruise town, I wouldn't recommend Skankway though I got an STD there
very informative, and I like shows like this. Peace. I'm Hendry, from Indonesia
My wife and I did a zip line tour instead of the train. Simply incredible.
I worked there in 2008 and 2011 was great time.
Great video 😉
I can't wait to move to Alaska in January. I will be living in the beautiful city of Fairbanks. I've been to skagway it's a neat little historic town.
Skyway is situated in a beautiful location. The entrance way to the Klondike via Non existent , ghost town Dyea . You overlooked the old graveyard in Skagway. A very spooky place.
I was fortunate enough to be on a cruise in 2004 or so, that stopped in Skagway and as frugal as I am, I had to spend over $100k to ride the White Pass RR. It was a partially sunny day and the views were spectacular. If it was 3 times the money it would still be worth it. It was one of the best things I've ever done. I would rank it up there with my hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up. If you ever get the chance, don't pass it up.
very cool place!!!
Two things I remember about Skagway. Eagles out the wazoo. How long it takes to drive to the town you can see across the inlet.
that's my type of town. love it
I remember playing the Yukon Trail computer game as a kid, and having to choose whether to lodge at Dyea or Skagway. Skagway had some bad characters!
The 'red train thing' at 2:51 is a steam powered rotary snowplow dating from the late 1890s. I believe it was brought up from southwest Colorado during World War II.
5:40 What an adorable name on a store: Buckshot & Bobbypins. Wonder if they sell anything else.
Thank you for sharing your trip with us. I haven’t seen any McMuffin short videos lately. How’s McMuffin doing? We love McMuffin the pig. 🥰
Interesting town.
I love here year round. Great to see you do a video on it.
Hello from Anchorage Alaska, here’s a suggestion for your next Alaska cruise, kenai, homer, Seward, and Whittier of course the first 3 are good fishing towns and there’s a lot of history in Whittier
I was there... Beautifull, feels like Cowboy town.
Shout out for Klondike Doughboy!!!! Yum!
Oh no Skagway looks very sad . It’s not like that before. But anyway that’s way back 2009 when I did with Alaska cruise for Norwegian Sun.
Briggs, ever heard of Warren Miller ski films? Best (not Attenborough) narrator ever... Briggs is on the bronze podium 👍👍. Great videos
Notification on time.
Cool video
When did the mudslides happen? My dad and I went on the White Pass Railway in late June and had a great time (aside from the locomotive breaking down near the summit; fortunately they got it running again)
Looks like a nice spot
Nice video
I would love to visit Alaska.
I'd be interested in visiting sometime.
You should do a video on seward alaska, I'm getting ready to move there from Virginia in a couple months and I'm curious to see what you think about it🙃
you make it to eagle river. the suburbs just north of anchorage I got your lunch.
I want to go up there so bad!
Love Alaska, but I have decided to move to Northern Washington from the PDX area(which sucks the big one nowadays) in a couple of years, lots of great small towns, but decent cities not far away, like Bellingham , SEA, and YVR my true love.

At least you'll be close to the Alaska Ferry terminal in Bellingham.
Whoa, I would have never ever guessed that's what you look like, Briggs! I have watched probably about a dozen videos of yours, but this is the first time I've seen you! I thought you were much younger!! Perhaps you don't show your face in the lower 48. That's what I think. 😉 Alaska is gorgeous, and I wish I had volunteered to go there in the US Air Force way back when. It might have kept me out of the Middle East. BTW, have you ever done a video(s) on the number of military bases or military personnel in each state? That might be interesting. "RickInAmarillo"
Beautiful little town. Wonder what it looks like all covered in snow (if it ever gets such snow being so close to the coast). Edit -- nevermind, you just answered that question in the video. 😆
My hometown! My dad and oldest still live there! 💕 I loved growing up there! Was it John McDermott you talked to? 1200 seems extremely high population. Is that summer time?
On my list of places to visit, but I'll be driving. Hopefully next summer.
I would go there if there was a saloon where Skagway Sal sings.
You wanna go at the peak of the season
