I live in Ontario Canada and I am always amazed by the public libraries here, because we got computers to use and we can borrow books and movies. And seeing Oodi’s library has just ruined all of the public libraries in Canada for me. It is so beautiful, clean, peaceful, and innovative. Finland keeps on amazing me every time I learn something about it

It's one of the most inviting, beautiful pubic spaces I've ever seen. I loved it. It's incredibly kid friendly too.
Thanks, Kat and whoever suggested the video. I'm learning Finnish to help with my work as a librarian so this video has been very helpful!

i ve been there last christmas when i was visiting Finland. I was amazed. The things you can do in there.....kneeting, fix things, instruments, rooms for music bands, computers(i suppose you can repair your pc there if you can),books in every language(didn't find greek books though,bummer),playground for children.....and many other things that propably haven't seen yet. "Civilization at it's prime" i said when i exited :D!!!

What a fun little tour of the library! It has such a modern look to it. It's cool how there are board games to play with and it seems like a good shape

Mahtava 😃--Oodi is undoubtedly one of the premier places to visit in Helsinki! From checking out books to 3-D designs, advanced sewing and recording studios, Oodi has it all! And (I think) the activities are free to Helsinkians(?)...except for the "kahliva".

Kirjasto ei ole enää hiljainen paikka, mutta erittäin moderni... Kiitos!! When I was driving in Finland (near Kuopio) 25 years ago, I saw the signs for "Keskusta" and was puzzled why this town was not on my map. I had the same problem in Spain with "Cambio de Sentido" (turn around place) and in France with "Rappel" (speed limit reminder).

Very good video! What I like most is when you speak puhekieli at normal speed (well, I consider it normal speed ... ) and I can enjoy some of the aspects of listening to a Finn. Of course I listen to podcasts too, but that is way harder, even if it is standard Finnish (mostly). I appreciate the spots where you just speak Finnish very much. Thanks!

Kiitos! For the fantastic educational videos. I am trying to learn Finnish and your channel helps immensely. Can you recommend a good dictionary for learning Finnish words. I have a few study books and guides but can't seem to find an updated Finnish/English dictionary. Thanks
@KatChatsFinnish
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think most people use online dictionaries these days. I think if you google suomi-englanti-suomi sanakirja, you will find some options. Not sure if anything has been published in recent years though.
This is a bit strange! I have been following you for a couple of years from Egypt. Last year, I got the chance to come study in Finland. So, two days ago my friends and I went to trip in Finland and we had to pass through Helsinki. On our way back we have(now) 5 hours waiting for the bus. So, what do we do? We go to the library (Oodi). Naturally, I look for a KZread video to guide me around this place as fast as possible. Guess which video comes first in the results? YOURS! And it's posted 2 hours ago! I immediately start looking for a girl with a pink hat, but directly notice it's a sunny day, which is not true right now haha. Anyway, maybe another time!

Hey! That's pretty good though! Just keep practicing and little by little you'll understand even more and more :)
What classification system(s) do Finnish libraries use? I tried to do some very brief research before asking you this question, and the results I got in a short amount of time were disappointing. I found some info on Chinese, Korean, and Japanese systems, but the only one I found for Europe was the Swedish Library Classification System, and I learned that Sweden started transitioning from that to the Dewey Decimal System back in 2008. My public library and the libraries in the schools I attended were in Dewey Decimal. Most Americans think the Dewey Decimal System is the only library classification system out there. When I attended university, their library was catalogued according to the Library of Congress system. I now own a lot of books myself, and when people visit my home, they usually joke, "Do you have all your books arranged according to the Dewey Decimal system?" I always look at them incredulously and respond, "Of course not--I have them arranged according to the Library of Congress scheme!" (And no, I'm NOT joking!)
@KatChatsFinnish
2 жыл бұрын
Hmm I'm not familiar enough with the classification system to give a definitive answer. The library website explains that they use some kind of classification, but doesn't give it a name: www.helmet.fi/fi-FI/Lapset/Kirjastossa/Miten_kirjat_on_jarjestetty(2589) They don't have the same info on the English site though.
So are the first two floors of this building considered part of the library, or is the library proper restricted solely to the third floor?
@KatChatsFinnish
2 жыл бұрын
It's part of the Oodi complex. I think you call the whole building the central library oodi, but the books are only on the 3rd floor.
Opi suomea👍🇫🇮
Great videos. Hi from NYC. I'm going to Finland at the end of November. What do you recommend to do in Helsinki during this time of the year?
@KatChatsFinnish
Жыл бұрын
It will be very dark (short days)! So be prepared for that! Depends on what you like to do. I would say watch a hockey game if you can, there are public saunas that visitors enjoy going to (or Allas Sea Pool for example for ocean swimming haha), walk around Helsinki center - I think by then some of the Christmas lights should be up. The Christmas market opens on Dec 1st idk if you'll have left by then. Porvoo is a cute day trip if you're into that kind of thing. Nature things aren't really at their best in Nov esp if there isn't any snow yet. So indoor things? Try some classics like korvapuusti which if you get them warm is nice with a cup of coffee on colder days. You can go up the olympic stadium tower for a 360 view - or clarion hotel has a rooftop bar with a view people enjoy.

@@KatChatsFinnish thanks for replying. It is my first time there, so id like to experience as much as i can. Im very curious about the dark days, its mind blowing (I'll definitely will go back summer time for those endless days, lol) I'd love to see the Olympic stadium for sure. Love hiking. Is there any ski jumping training camp where I can watch? How many hours of day light do you get late November? Any night club/bar I should have go in Helsinki? Love metal music, but in a club it doesn't matter the type of music.

Lahti is famous for ski jumping, but it's outside helsinki. They have a huge ski jump center and in the summer the bottom of it turns into a swimming pool! Tbh I don't know much about the nightlife in Helsinki since I did my uni years in Scotland & Turku, so you'll have to explore a bit on your own sorry!

I noticed that some of the signs in the library were in Finnish, Swedish and English, while others were solely in Finnish. Any explanation as to why?

My guess is that the signs in Finnish only have Finnish books in that area. Then the signs with other languages also have Swedish and English books there too

Haha, I started learning Finnish because of my ex, we were in a long term serious relationship. After he unexpectedly broke up with me I decided to continue learning Finnish since I was pretty far in anyway, why not. I did take a break from studying heavily. I just came back to the channel to practice, and lo and behold I'm getting a tour of one of the places he cheated in 😂 fabulous. I know you usually keep your channel clean, but can someone teach me some really creative Finnish phrases to curse the universe with? I feel like the basics don't cut it anymore 😂 Are there other libraries of the same name in the Helsinki area? This is whete he said he went with her, but it turns out it's over three hours away from where he lives and he said he only went half an hour. For my own curiosity, I'd like to have a better idea which, if either, was true. Thanks!

That's such a nasty coincidence! I'm really sorry to hear that gosh!! I know the channel "Aleksi Himself" has videos on cursing like a Finn so I suggest you go watch that one for inspiration! xD Well there are many libraries in Helsinki, but this is the only one called "oodi".
