Wal Pickups in a Spector Bass?! Actually they're Rautia Multi-Coils and they RULE!!!!

Музыка

Wal Basses. Legendary, but mostly unknown.
Spector Basses, well known in the US and Europe as a great rock bass, among other things. There’s something extra special about Wal Basses though. They have these things called Multi-Coil Pickups which I believe to be some the greatest ever designed! I installed them into my Spector Euro LX 5-string bass, which is my main gigging and travel bass and one I plan on doing a lot of videos with.
When I ordered these pickups I had them wired the "Old Way" like an early Wal, this means the Coils are similar to a Jazz bass in the sense where each row is wired together. This way I was able to use the 4-way switches for maximum flexibility, and maybe a little overkill in the tone options department!.This is a slightly more traditional sound.

As a musician, I ask myself about my tone and tone production practically every time I play. I actually thought every musician did that. I guess not, for me it's probably a carry over from playing acoustic instruments like classical guitar, jazz double bass and a few wind instruments. With those, I try and produce a good tone every time I play. The same goes for electric bass for me.

C'mon beardtobald. You should have posted the guy who inspired these famous bass players to pick up the wal in the first place. Percy Jones of Brand X, and Mick Karn of Japan. Geeze, Geddy mentioned brand X all the time back in the day. it is no wonder he used a wal on power windows, and yes it certainly helped that Mr Collins had one in the studio. While these pickyups sound great, I dont hear any of the classic "Walness" to them. Still great sounding pickups!

It's so weird, I thought I had Mick Karn in my teleprompter text or in photos, but you're right, I left him out. These videos are deep plunge for me, it's hard to get everyone! Brand X is a classic, mad respect! It's hard to hear an unprocessed raw sound, especially when you're used to hearing these with the full preamp, and however they were recorded. The tone comes out a little more during the slap sections. I'll be adding some processing in my next videos to really show some tonal differences.

@@spi-fi_media Part of the magic in their preamps is that each pickup has it's own input and is blended actively, then an adjustable lpf is applied with the tone controls. I suspect you might get a similar sound by using a preamp that also has two inputs and to do any other sound coloring with the amp or eq pedal. An option might be a Richter MX, Noll mixpot or apparently EMG also has such a thing.

I think I know what you mean, but it's not wired in a way to split coils like a P-bass, but I did consider it when ordering the pickups, by grabbing three on top, and two on the bottom, would cancel some of the hum but not all. I also considered zig zagging the coils for the same effect, but kept it straight because I wanted a 51' P type sound as an option! The 4-way switch was enough of a challenge to figure out! Perhaps in future experiments! I got some interesting things coming up that are in the works, so do subscribe if you like this sort of research and setup experimentation!

@@spi-fi_media Keep it the way it is man. Your neck humbucker in series mode kills any classic P. Plus you don't have to deal with asymmetric coil locations and string tone balance. Even the reverse P does solve it only half way. Just keep this. Far superior. I'm doing something similar with single coils and mini-humbuckers. 4 in total, high side slanted towards the neck for better string to string feel and low side towards the bridge for slightly tighter low B timbre. I won't be making it 24 combi though! :D

I’ll also post a play-through with this bass and some active tone shaping. That said, have you tried a passive Wal? I guess I got lucky with the chance to try the one I did to inspire this experiment. Besides, it’s fun to try these different designs, I may be done with standard coils for a while! It also sounds amazing with dead strings, much to my surprise. What bass did Justin play on that song? I can’t really tell due to the processing. The Demeter preamp is likely just as rare of a thing to own as a passive Wal! I’m speculating of course...
