Alongside MAD MAX and WALKABOUT, WAKE IN FRIGHT is widely acknowledged as one of the seminal films in the development of modern Australian cinema. Directed by Ted Kotcheff (RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD), the film tells the story of a British schoolteacher's descent into personal demoralization at the hands of drunken, deranged derelicts while stranded in a small town in outback Australia. Virtually unseen in the United States and renowned in its home country after years of neglect, WAKE IN FRIGHT is ripe for rediscovery and returns to cinemas beginning with engagements at Film Forum in New York City on October 5th, The NuArt in Los Angeles on October 19th and expanding to additional markets before a home video and VOD release in Q1 of 2013.

Donald pulls off the Aussie accent admirably.
Some of the best lines ever spoken in a movie and they were consistently back to back.

Fantastic lines - setup and delivery, I love this film and this scene in particular it almost summarises the whole film, I wish more people would see this movie.
Discontent is the luxury of the Well-to-Do !
This could be one of the greatest scenes in the history of cinema, definitely Australian cinema. So much going on, so seemingly simplistic, so much depth. I could not love it more.

I totally agree - so much is said but in so few words, outstanding.
I love that Mr. Pleasance writes in his notepad (folded open), in landscape. In the center of the page. A true alcoholic.

@Pk PEKOS There are no TRUE alcoholics, just lost humans trying to navigate despair. Plenty of us have precious moments to record inane ramblings and do so compulsively. No need to gatekeep alcoholism, addiction comes in all too many flavors. Seriously though, telling people 'you would never understand unless you had been there' is the height of bullshit. Also, blaming it on a 'dominating religious fanatic' just gives whoever that was more power. 'Dominating religious fanatics' do suck (yeah I've got experience there too), but own up to your mistakes and accept them.

You are intriguing me. How does writing in the middle of a sideways-splayed notepad denote alcoholism? (I'm one too. So don't be afraid to answer.)
Donald spent some time with the Aussies as a fellow POW during the war and was also an alco. Ideal choice to act this character.
I am able to resonate with this film on so many levels; coming from a seriously mentally deranged and violently abusive drunkard outback family, this movie strikes the true essence of the bleakness outback on every level. Every single prop and setting is still found in places like Winton (check out the Australian Hotel if you ever go there), Barcaldine, Normanton... such a powerful film.

I’m terrified by the outback, whether thru films like this , jaws on trotters razorback, the long weekend. The terrain is alien and forbearing as the locals.
@thatguykalem

@@Mumscup don't be afraid of the terrain itself. The environment is beautiful and diverse. Difficult for us to live in, yes. But who's us? Australia's first peoples lived pretty comfortably in lot of those places for thousands of years before Europeans rolled up. Why do we have so much trouble then? It's because the colonial philosophy we still carry at the core of our national identity tells us that we need to dominate the Australian environment, control it - but nowhere in there is an objective to understand it or to live as an integrated part of it. Instead, we carry on ways of living and producing resources that are adverse to the environment itself. That is, the environment isn't hostile to us - we're hostile to it. So, I think the anxiety the outback imposes doesn't come from a fear of the place. It comes from a deep-rooted fear that we can't belong here in the way that the colonial philosophy says is the only way of belonging here. After 270 years of refusing to play by the rules of this place, the place hasn't packed up the game and walked away. Because of course it can't. Instead of accepting that and trying to change the way we live and produce, we just keep going, struggling against it, trying to get on top. We can't shake that colonial mindset that says if we just clear more land, or invent a different machine, or drain another river for irrigation, we'll be in command. But deep down, we know it's impossible. We're fighting a losing battle but our national identity tells us that we can't drop our weapons. The European way is the right way and if it's not working, it's the place's fault, not ours. We can't be comfortable unless we bend this place to our will. Our fear comes from the knowledge that this place will never bend - and that we're going to get found out sooner or later.

Saw this back in the 80s...left an impression on me. Watching this scene is even better than I remembered...a true horror tale...nothing supernatural, no serial killers...horror in everyday existence. A true warning against boozing up

I grew up in bush towns like this in the 1970’s. My parents recall such scenes as the norm. I would not regard this portrayal as a horror film. More like an outsider’s descent into a personal hell.

'Doc' Tydon: All the little devils are proud of hell. John Grant: Do you mean you don't think the 'Yabba is the greatest little place on Earth? 'Doc' Tydon: Could be worse. John Grant: How? 'Doc' Tydon: [drinking] Supply of beer could run out.
Massif scene...Pleasence's Aussi accent just take the house down...! A masterpiece from the 70 '...!
If you’ve never seen it, watch this film. It’s a top 5 all time favorite of mine. Truly a shocking and terrifying movie.
This beer's gone warm
My favorite movie ever. Just so underated
Donald Pleasence gets everywhere!!
One of a kind, this film.
The best time to watch this movie is on a stinking, hot, sunny day with plenty of beers, preferably in Australia!

Just did that. I'm in Sydney and it was 38 degrees today. We don't have air conditioning either. It's gone 7pm and I opened the door because it's hotter in than out now, and a buzzing blowie just flew in. I'm not a big drinker - I've had a beer and I'll have another - that's a lot for me - but cold beer is the best drink on a hot day I reckon.
This movie has so many underlying themes surrounding about drinking, one of the best depictions seen on the screen. I was terrifying of having a beer after seen it but at the same time enjoyed what I've just seen
An outsider to the mainstream, well accepted in the Yabba, the Doc is expertly brought to life by DP, who also gets most of the best lines.
One of the best Australian Movies...
I love this film considering he walks around without a shirt through 90% of it❤❤❤❤

I was waiting for donald to say "I SHOT HIM SIX TIMESSSSSS "
I've been to the middle of Queensland, and just as this film portrays, the food sucks. Well, it's not that bad, but if you ever move to an outback town, say goodbye to delicious nights out.
