Big thanks to Morek, AmberJewel, and AuAK92 for suggesting the video topics!
War, for all of its destructiveness, ironically brings with it big pushes for innovation and creative problem solving. Some famous examples of this include the atomic bomb developed over the course of WWII, or the Trojan Horse from Homer's epic poem, "The Iliad." However, every once in a while an individual with a more zany mind comes up with some rather peculiar plans. In this video, I cover some of the more interesting plans/circumstances that occurred during battles throughout history, including Cambyses II's use of cats and animals during the 'Battle of Pelusium', the world's first "successful" combat submarine, the Confederate-made H.L. Hunley, and the story of some unexpected combatants during the 'Battle of the Bees'.

Your style in these videos have many identifiable influences, but the snappiness of your execution and especially the spot-on timing and cadence of your reads really brings everything together. It’s so weird, right? I mean, you obviously have to have a script to execute, or at the very least an outline of topics, and while the research and knowledge is excellent, it’s the execution of all these things coupled with a bobbing and weaving birb adorned in various regalia depending on the topic that sets this apart. I’ve completely ditched channels that just can’t get out of their own way when narrating because it’s just so hard to listen to- this channel should serve as a primer for anyone remotely considering historical/educational topics. It’s all in the delivery, baby. Get it? Clever pun, right? Oh never mind. PS as a female, I found this channel while researching historical info on a topic and absolutely love it. Please don’t start pandering to specific genders/ages/whateverthefuck, this is perfect exactly as is. Well done birb of the cobalt persuasion.

Don’t not forget. When Hannibal was in self exile he gave advice to the ruler of the kingdom he was hiding out in. And in this area was a vast amount of poisonous snakes. *So he had many men round up TONS of snakes, put them in clay jars, and launch them as projectiles at the enemy ships* so they’d slither below deck and harass the naked, unclothed and chained and unprotected slave rowers and obviously this was quite effective as well as causing disorder in the ranks top deck. So much so that the Romans after hearing about this unusual conflict investigated and someone let slip that Hannibal had been hiding out there. They surrounded his house and he imbibed poison and died as his last act of keeping away from them

As a Connecticut resident I know for a fact that the first submersible ever used for war purposes was the Turtle. Basically it was The Hunley in the revolutionary war but with a much lower kill count… of zero. Although that’s not from lack of trying. They tried to use it to attach explosive charges to British ships on two separate occasions but both failed and forced the operator of the craft to retreat. So the Turtle is the first war sub but the Hunley does still hold the title of first sub with kills under its belt. Even if most of those were it’s own operators.

Excellent video! I can actually think of one earlier example of a "submarine" though, the USS Turtle, a submersible used by the United States in the Revolutionary War. Essentially, it was an insulated wooden barrel with a stick with a bomb on the end of it (similarly to the Hunley). The Turtle attempted several missions to sink British vessels on the Hudson River but was never successful.

In the Battle of Kwajalein (WW2 Pacific), the Japanese did all sorts of weird things to try and thwart the American advance on the island. One that comes to mind with this video took place at night. The Japanese used palm fronds held out in front of them to try and disguise their counter attack into American lines. The Americans were absolutely baffled the Japanese thought this would work and cut them down in huge numbers. Another, more grim tactic was to use Korean slaves dressed in white to try and draw Americans to shoot and expose their positions in the dark night. One Japenese officer even tried to fight a flamethrower with a fire extinguisher. It didn't end well for the Japanese officer.

Good news! I’m a lady and watched BECAUSE of the bonkers war tactics. The massive failure at Tanga was apparently quite brutal. My favourite war documentary included accounts from soldiers that were actually there. Most of the forces were people that were basically forced into a conflict for land they didn’t own or live on and had 0 control over or even voting rights on. Add to that that it was mainly dense jungle that they were unfamiliar with, and it was a goddamn massacre. Just running blind through the brush while you hear your comrades screaming in agony all around you.

Okay but to think the Hunley was basically a primitive, unwitting kamikaze bomber, it done a pretty good job. It took out an entire naval vessel several miles off the coast in a single hit. If it was lowered to 1-2 crew members and consistently sank ships, as opposed to having full-on conflicts where an entire ship might fail to take down another, it'd probably be one of the more efficient tactics available for the time.

lady here! would love to see something between early edo period fashion, OR the most brutal ways to torture people through history! if you take that latter option, scaphism, the (probably not true) practice of forcefeeding people money and milk while theyre trapped between boats, then GIVING them the boats, and dumping them in a swamp to be horrifically devoured alive by insects would be an excellent addition.
