Re: the shift lever arrangement, VW is trying to maintain consistency to ICE models, where you pull the lever back for more engine braking. To please everyone, I'd suggest that they use a button on the shifter to toggle between coast and heavy regen and remember the mode when you restart the car.

Perfect and detailed review! After 1-2 weeks of searching, analysis, and after watching your review I finally made the decision to choose the Tiguan as my first company car. Very detailed and useful review. Once I got past your naf (corny!) joke at the beginning, the 'ride' was actually pretty good. Much more in-depth analysis and commentary than other car video reviews, I have to say. The Tiguan hybrid was in fact a late-in-the-day consideration for my next company car but, based on your review and other info I've seen (e.g. tax benefits), I think I'll go for one. Keep up the good (detailed) work! Vielen Dank :-0)

Thank you for an excellent review as always for those of us who wants to know Everything. Switching to hybrid car soon and looking through my options. I dont really get why VW hasn't introduced a battery expansion option for those of us who drives longer distances every day. Also the 3.6KW charging is a bit disappointing. I would really appreciate being able to fully charge during lunch break. It takes alot more than a couple of hours you claim to charge 13KWh with 3.6kW charging. Thank you for measuring the boot space with folded seats. This is one of the most important specs when I look for a new car but it's for some reason neglected in most reviews and almost impossible to find on google. This is also the thing that makes a choice between passat and tiguan hard for me. I WANT the Tiguan, but sometimes I NEED the extra ~25 centimeters of length that the Passat have.

Thanks for the info Thomas - once again! I'm with you Thomas, the shift lever on the pre-facelift cars was classier, especially with a high spec car. (Actually I quite liked the previous steering wheel with its neat silver trim). And why did they down grade the earlier 12.3 inch digital gauge cluster to 10 inch, a year or so ago! Oh, and shame about the sticking out, tall, jacked-up, ugly lower rear valance on this model. Nice airy light interior on this test car though. All the best.

Nice review yet again, Would still like to hear also something about the matrix driving lights. How well do they work, and what kind of range do they have? Since I suspect that no auxiliary lights can be installed to Tiguan, if it has matrix lights. At Scandinavia it is absolutely vital to have proper driving lights outside city areas.

  • @maereanm

you're correct. but Tiguan is smaller than the Passat while having the same battery. I think we're lucky the Tiguan has the new 13 kWh battery instead of the previous 10 kWh battery. I believe the 7,2 kW charging speed would have required a way better (and bigger and heavier and more expensive) cooling system for the electric components.

Yeah indeed batteries do come at a price, both monetary and environmentally. As for CO2 output, PHEV can be more efficient if used correctly / charged frequently. If not, it is worse for the environment

Autogefühl Autogefühl Was thinking about Chromatization (Chrome plating) of parts. Like you see on the grill of this Tiguan. Tesla has dropped all chrome on the Model Y, because of the bad effect it has on the environment. Proccess uses toxic acid baths and may cause various health conditions. Pollution is a major concern as the byproducts of chrome plating are hazardous substances.

Did the VW designers spend to much time around the Range Rover Evoque? I'm thinking about front light lamps her. If I could decide how the Hybrid systems should be used, I would say that the electric systems/motors should be used in city's and every time you accelerate/need torque, because in those situations the car uses more fuel. And the plugin-hybrid, I don't know if is that good of an idea. I mean, you are depending on petrol stations anyway, whey should you be dependent of one more thing, in order to drive a car. In my mind is better to charge the battery while driving. I don't know how cost efectiv that is, but it sound's better for me. To produce energy you have to use energy...............so......I don't know.

Today with PHEV and EV technology there is no excuse for not providing at least an electric AWD system except keeping the price of the car down. In this case the car is expensive enough to warrant providing an AWD at least as an option.

The Jeep Compass PHEV with its 4X4e powertrain seems to be the better choice, compared to this new Tiguan. The Mini Countryman PHEV seems similar to the Jeep Compass PHEV, however the Countryman offers no blind spot monitoring. Also the Jeep Compass S/Trailhawk PHEV is lower in price than the other competitors. (Taking it’s assistant systems and comfort features into account). It also has a smoother shift between its electric-drive and gasoline-drive. Would love to see a direct comparison of the Tiguan-, Countryman-, Compass- PHEV’s.

    Mpg once battery is depleted?

  • @maereanm

    @maereanm

    3 жыл бұрын

at what speed? in which environment? on the highway, at 130 km/h (81 mph), it's 7,3 L/100km (39 mpgUK). once the battery is depleted, the car (my Passat GTE 2016) acts as a regular hybrid. I get between 5-7 L/100 km (56-40 mpgUK) in hybrid drive and normal pace. Flooring it a LOT in GTE mode (218 hp), I get a temporary 8-9 L/100km (35-31 mpgUK). I recharge every day at home at a 220V socket. This whole year's average is 4,6 L/100 km (61 mpgUK) 108 gr CO2/km which includes all vacations. The best was 1500 km (930 miles) with a full tank at 3,2 L/100km (88 mpgUK) 75 gr CO2/km. The worst was 770 km (480 miles) with a full tank at 6,2 L/100km (46 mpgUK) 146 gr CO2/km. The longest continuous electric drive was 416 km (258 miles). I can get a maximum of 650 km electric km (405 miles) in a month. The average monthly electric drive is 390 km (243 miles) including the covid lockdown. After lockdown, the average monthly electric drive is 530 km (330 miles). The full electric distance is about 37% of the total. My previous Passat B6 2.0 TDI had an average of 8 L/100 km (35 mpgUK) 210 gr CO2/km. So the Passat GTE gets 48% better gr CO2/km than my previous diesel car. In electric drive, the average consumption is 32 kWh/100 km (19.9 W/mile). That's not a stelar efficiency but it's 99% in the city traffic with the kids to and from school in one of the world's worst city for traffic. The car doesn't compute these statistics. I do it on my own. I fully recommend the GTE/eHybrid. The car is a gem.

An interesting review. Tiguan continues a European car producer trend, at least for the upcontented cars exported to the Americans, to add expensive content of mixed utility. Some content, such as the plug-in hybrid power train, excellent noise control and responsive suspensions to name a few, are sustainable and valuable advances. Others, the unintelligible electronic assists, the ornate interior treatments, closed diagnostic architectures and the marketing glitz that support inflated prices charge "rich" American customers while providing little of value. This choice is not forced on more important "wise" European or Chinese customers. Americans would be much better served by having the decontented base European models available for half the price. At that point, the decontented might better compete against more reliable, less flashy Japanese and Korean workhorse alternatives.

In the VW Konfigurator a couple of weeks ago, it was mentioned that there is only a 9 kWh battery inside. Now the configuration is not telling you the detail anymore. When I asked VW there was also no clear statement on this. Have you tried a full charging test to verify your stemmet of a 13 kWh battery capacity? The way how VW hides the detail makes me suspicious about the real fact here.

Toyota RAV4 PHEV blows this out of the water! 302hp combined - 45 miles electric range - AWD. Why buy either of them when you could get a fully electric Skoda Enyaq?!

Because Enyaq is not on the market yet. Or id 4. Then, maybe it's about avoiding some taxes in some countries. This phev affair is a transitory action anyway.

    >> Toyota RAV4 PHEV blows this out of the water! 302hp combined - 45 miles electric range - AWD. VW PHEVs are excellent cars. That doesn't reflect at all on Toyotas. They may be good or bad cars independently of VWs. Regular hybrid Toyotas and even Lexus I see on the street have only 120 hp and are very slow. And they have CVTs which don't feel as good as a DSG. >> Why buy either of them when you could get a fully electric Skoda Enyaq?! There are still many countries around the world with insufficient electric charging infrastructure. I have kids and I can't afford to get stranded. Plus, you would really struggle to travel 2000 km (1243 miles) in 2 days with an electric car (which is something I had to do).

Have you ever been in a PHEV? Have you ever been in a PHEV displaying 1.2 L/100 km (and 20 kWh / 100km) for the last 330 km (because it has used only 4 L of petrol for the entire distance)? Have you been a pedestrian in a large busy intersection with 4 lanes each way and smelled the toxic fumes and wished all cars would drive with no deadly gases (at least in the city)? Have you ever been in a PHEV at full acceleration and thinking "how is that even possible with a 1.4 L engine" (and seeing a nice Audi A8 TDI not being able to keep up on the highway on-ramp)?

@@maereanm Have you ever been in București man? Or even more, in Dubai? Cause I've there and I know what bad air means. Phev are just a marketing strategy as most of the owners don't even recharge the batery but having a Phev they avoid paying taxes. Because of the electrical engine and the batery that car will weight more, and the luggage space will be diminished, therefore when you have to travel 4 people and full of laguage, that so called fuel economy can be just a mith. The idea is a good one but the end users are not fair in terms of properly using this system. Then, the price is significantly high. EV should be the right approach but the car service should be also in your proximty.

@@l.e.i.4111 yes, I live in Bucharest. I have done 3060 km in electric mode this year mostly in Bucharest. I have done only 37 km in hybrid mode in Bucharest this year. I agree the car is expensive. I have bought it 2nd hand, I can't afford it new. I didn't get any tax benefit for a 2nd hand PHEV. The car is an estate and the trunk is 483 L which is enough. With 218 hp and 7.6 seconds to 100 km/h is fast enough outside of the city. The electric motor has a torque of 330 instant Nm and 115 hp which makes the car faster than all the cars at the stop light (up to 60 km/h). I recharge every day at home at a 220V socket. I agree it takes determination to recharge it every single day. As a fun fact, driving electric (0,26 lei/km) is cheaper than petrol. The cost corresponds to a petrol ICE car using 5.7 L/100 km in Bucharest, which is impossible. This whole year's average is 4,6 L/100 km (61 mpgUK) 108 gr CO2/km which includes all vacations. The best was 1500 km (930 miles) with a full tank at 3.2 L/100km (88 mpgUK) 75 gr CO2/km. The worst was 770 km (480 miles) with a full tank at 6.2 L/100km (46 mpgUK) 146 gr CO2/km. A fuel economy between 3.2 and 6.2 L/100km for a full tank is not a myth, is a good value for a 218 hp petrol estate car that has usually 3 or 4 people in it (or even 5). The longest continuous electric drive was 416 km (258 miles). I can get a maximum of 650 km electric km (405 miles) in a month. The average monthly electric drive is 530 km (330 miles). The full electric distance is about 37% of the total. So it's pretty good. Is not as bad as it may seem.

@@l.e.i.4111 Hi - yes, we hear what you say about the expense - agreed. And the weight - but I wouldn't worry about that - I'd be happy carrying around the extra weight! As Thomas stated, a PHEV is good if you can plug it in every night in the comfort of your home, and then experience the electric drive for short commutes or city/town driving - plus importantly you never have to visit a foul public charging station, unlike BEV drivers. And with a PHEV it's easier to do a long road trip, or if you are called out suddenly in the evening when your BEV might not be charged up yet... Cheers.

Too much power for a big car to be front wheel drive only! Sorry even in the dry it will still struggle for grip. Can’t wait for all wheel drive to become available it needs it. Gear stick looked old school I agree Thomas and B mode first selection over D mode for the electric to be prioritised in city driving which is what you want in a hybrid. Coasting is only beneficial on the motorway which is not the best environment for hybrids as compared to city driving which we all know. I find myself wanting to wait for the next generation hybrid and give this model a skip because they charge lots of money you expect better. The hybrid idea is not new but vw still look in there infancy with it. As I say nice car but I will wait for the next generation I expect more at high prices.

100 km of range requires, in real world, 32 net kWh of battery (34 gross kWh). There's nowhere to put it (and have a 50L fuel tank and an ICE Internal Combustion Engine). You have seen (14:34) that there's no space left under the trunk after placing a gross battery of 13 kWh.

What I find is that quotes on power and torque read ok 240hp ok.295ftlb 400nm torque ok not great but ok but that's when you have electric and petrol engine working together once electric gone and it will go from time to time your driving a huge heavy car about on a 1.5 petrol putting out about 130hp which is ok but only about 160'170 ftlb torque !!!! they are dreadful unrelaxing overstretch and if the car has any quality feel it turns into a hard work annoying drive. I'm not a speed freak I drive about like a tortoise but I still want a relaxing effortless drive via torque and all these small engined hybrids once electric power has gone is like driving an overweight car struggling along horribly hard work like a 70's vauxhall viva .it's not only vw but all these tiny engined hybrids nice to drive when charged but with no electric horrible and frustrating.

Yes I agree I think on all these hybrids more time should be spent outlining the driving if and when electric has run out however briefly that may be. These are not electric vehicles the hybrid car is a mixture of both fossil and electric and attention to the cars usability of only on fossil should be part of any review.
